Mounica | 32 comments I Capture the Castle was slow at first, and it was actually the last 50 pages where I really got into the book. So I ended up liking it. :)

Right now, I'm reading The Samurai's Garden by Gail Tsukiyama and I just started Brisingr by Christopher Paolini. Did anyone else read Brisingr? Was it as good as the previous books?

message 14702: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) Finished Speaker for the Dead. Definitely enjoyable. Now I'm going to tackle the rest of Guns, Germs, and Steel after having taken a break.

message 14703: by Fiona (Titch) (new)

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished the delightful The Armada Boy - Kate Ellis. Think I will now read Case Histories - Kate Atkinson for my next book as I have wanted to know what her books are like.

message 14704: by Avigail (last edited Sep 30, 2009 07:28AM) (new)

Avigail (avigailr) Well I have 90 more pages to go at The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards, that I will finish tonight most probably.
I will continue to read The Name of the Rose Including Postscript by Umberto Eco the book is in Greek.
I will also start Daughter of the Ganges The Story of One Girl's Adoption and Her Return Journey to India by Asha Miro

message 14705: by Dawn (new)

Dawn Celmer (bhekadawn) | 20 comments well, I've just finished the first half of Unaccustomed Earth by Jhumpha Lahiri and have found it so uninspiring I cannot go on any longer. It's time to move on to something else. I'll have to come back to this later and see maybe if offers some enjoyment at a different point and time.

Bridgit | 475 comments am about 70 pages into Rebecca and I just don't get the appeal. I have no real urge to get back to reading it. It so far doesnt hold my interest at all. I'm hoping it gets better, otherwise this will hang me up for at least a week...

message 14707: by Juniper (new)

message 14709: by JSou (new)

JSou That's so cool he got to test out the game! Sign me up for that! I've never tried Guitar Hero, I just went straight to Rock Band (that way each kid got to use an instrument/microphone)

With the Beatles Rock Band, you can even plug in extra microphones for 3 part harmony. It's pretty fun. Addicting as hell, but fun!

I thought it picked up a lot plotwise after about the first 50 pages, but that's just me.

message 14712: by Carol (new)

Carol I am reading Winter In Madrid and I got Duma Key at library to read.

message 14713: by Lauren (new)

Lauren | 220 comments Just finished The Omen by David Seltzer! Starting The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón!

message 14714: by Denise (new)

Denise I have recently finished The Hope of Refuge A Novel by Cindy Woodsmall. I had won this book through a Goodreads giveaway. It was quite good and I will be writing a short review. I also read Talk Before Sleep A Novel by Elizabeth Berg. For anyone that has helped a friend or family member through dealing with cancer this book will touch you personally. If you haven't dealt with someone close to you having cancer I would still recommend this book.

I just started The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. It is starting out to be a powerhouse of a book.

message 14715: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (syellico) Started a little early on Rebecca, which I purchased about two years ago and it has been sitting on my shelves since then! It comes highly recommended by a good friend of mine, so am looking forward to it. I just started listening to Cat O' Nine Tales And Other Stories and I'm still not sure what I think of it yet.

message 14716: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Started a bit early with the Poisonwood Bible. I tried to read this years ago, but never got far into it. Don't remember anything about it so I am looking forward to picking it up again.

message 14717: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'm about a hundred pages into The Autumn Castle by Kim Wilkins. Really good so far! Appropriate book for the fall season, too. I'm also re-reading The Secret Life of Bees for my English class.

I just finished Her Fearful Symmetry by Audrey Niffenegger... what a great ghost story, and a wonderful book to have read at this time of year....

Onto Help! A Bear is Eating Me by Mykle Hansen...

message 14719: by Liz (new)

Liz I loved The Secret Life of Bees! Did anyone else read, that, and then pick up The Mermaid Chair, only to find themselves disappointed?

message 14720: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments I am about 130 pages into The Given Day by Dennis Lehane and really like the pace. Gaining insight in the history of the times is another great benefit.

Liz, I loved The Secrect Life of Bees but had heard people were disappointed by The Mermaid Chair, so I haven't picked it up yet.

message 14723: by Michelle♥ (last edited Oct 01, 2009 06:43AM) (new)

Michelle♥ I just finished Mystic River by Dennis Lehane. I was a bit disappointed by this book, but I think it was because I had such high, high expectations after reading Shutter Island, which I absolutely LOVED.

Now I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I just started it and not very far, but so far it's intriguing. I hope it lives up to all the hype and credit it's accumulated!

I read The Secret Life of Bees and totally loved it. I made my mom read that one & recommended it to all my aunties. My step-dad watched the movie on a plane & told me it was good (I haven't seen it yet). But good to know about The Mermaid Chair...I was always wondering about that one.

Maureen Liz wrote: "I loved The Secret Life of Bees! Did anyone else read, that, and then pick up The Mermaid Chair, only to find themselves disappointed?"

I actually read The Mermaid Chair before reading The Secret Life of Bees. I didn't care for The Mermaid Chair at all, but I still picked up The Secret Life of Bees because I had heard so many great things about it. I ended up loving it.

We read The Mermaid Chair in my face-to-face book club, and several of the members had previously read (and loved) Bees. They were very disappointed in Mermaid Chair. So, Heather, you didn't miss much!

Gabriella, I see that you cut and pasted your review here.... That really is not the point of this thread. This thread is to tell us what you are reading, and if we are interested, we will check out the reviews for it.

Thanks for your excitement level, tho. It is very refreshing.

I just finished HELP! A Bear is Eating Me! - this book is an absolute RIOT! a short 129 pages, but man does it pack a lot in there!!!!

Onto Huge A Novel which is an ARC I recvd.

message 14729: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ Ok...this might sound like a really dumb question and I'm sorry for my naiveness, but um....

what's an ARC?

message 14730: by JSou (new)

JSou It stands for Advanced Reader's Copy. Publishing companies send them out before the book is released. You can even enter to win different books here on the Goodreads giveaway page.

message 14731: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ Oh ok! Thanks! :) I entered into a couple of them. Hope I win! *crosses fingers!*

message 14732: by Michelle♥ (last edited Oct 01, 2009 02:42PM) (new)

Michelle♥ I'm reading The Handmaid's Tale and am having a hard time getting into it! I'm only on page like 32 and I find myself becoming more and more A.D.D., picking up other things to do before settling down and reading it.

Anyone else feel that way? I just feel lost because nothing is outright explained in this. I'm going to keep reading, but I find it more of a chore to do so. I did not expect it to be this way...

I thought it was going to be a book that the pages would turn themselves...

Lori, Huge is on my list of books to read. I'll be interested in what you think of the book. I have so many in my TBR pile that I'm waffling about whether to get it or not.

Really Dorie? I hadnt heard of it prior to the Literary Agency sending me information on it.

Im about 30 page in and it's refreshing. A young boy, ohhhh.. about middle school age, wants to be a detective and trys to solve a case for his grandmother.

It's hard to imagine the things the author writes as coming from the mind and mouth of a kid my sons age... it seems to mature. Altho it is set in the 80's in Center Jersey.... so perhaps kids grew up quick back then in that area?

I loved the Handmaid's Tale, Michelle. It explains more as the story goes along, but it really makes you think. Very haunting...

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments it's been ages since i've been on here, life just totally got ahead of me in september. i barely had time to read, let alone get online!

i *finally* finished The Gargoyle last night. i loved this story, and even though i'm not 100% certain that everything in the book was real, or imagined, i thought it was beautifully written, and very engaging.

not sure what i'll pick up next, but i got 2 gift cards to B & N for my birthday, so i'm sure i'll find something. ;)

Damn Julie, you are making me feel old... Not alive in the 80's???? hahahaha

What you just described is somewhat what the main character is like... so ok, it's close enough. To me, in my middle school years (which were in the 80's -cough cough) I didnt really know many adult-like kids. Thanks for the information, it certainly helps me see the character in a new light!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments I'm reading An Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon, her latest in the Outlander series. It's rather slow going for me, as I have a lot going on right now, but I am loving it. Last spring, I started threads on other Outlander books in this group, so I will start one up on Echo soon, unless someone else does first. I got to meet Diana Gabaldon last Friday at a book signing and talk. I admit that I was star struck.

As there were about 300 people waiting to meet her and get her book signed (I was one of the lucky ones who got in the first group of 25), I had decided to be very brief with any comments. As it was, when I got to her, I was pretty much speechless, which doesn't happen to me very often. Of course, afterward, I thought of all the witty, clever things I could have said. I did get a picture with her, though. During her talk, she displayed such intelligence and a great sense of humor.

Cristina Jacobs | 2 comments New to this group- hello everyone!

I am 300 pages into Girl with the Dragon tattoo by Stieg Larsson. Took me a bit to get into it (about 80 pages)- translation is a bit odd, but the book is really intriguing once you get into it.

I have Loving Frank, Bridge of Sighs, White Tiger, The Book Thief and That old Cape Magic (in no particular order) queued up. Anyone read these and have some feedback?

The only book I've read in that list is The Book Thief and I loved it! BUT its different, and I didn't like the first couple pages. Once I got into it I absolutely loved it, one of my favorites :)
