Jayme: I loved Enders Game and enjoyed Speaker for the Dead. I preferred Enders Game, but still liked Speaker. I seem to always like books by Orson Scott Card.

I haven't read Outliers; you recommend it?

Estrella | 1 comments Right now I'm reading One Hundred Years Of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. I'm liking the book so far and it has my attention. I'm probably the only 8th grader that has ever read it , but my teacher think i can understand it, which I do even if her didn't when he read it in high school. I'm proud of myself!

Has anyone read it before?

PDXReader I have just finished The Help, which I completely enjoyed and highly recommend. I got asked to read & review The Bottom of the Sky by William C. Pack. It's not something I would have chosen for myself, and I was kind of dreading having to read it, but I'm more than half-way through it & actually liking it.

Ashley (ash88) | 34 comments Finally finished The Shadow of the Wind... the only reason why it took so long was because I have had a ton of school work and have been working a lot lately. BUT IT WAS AMAZING. The first half was a bit slower but was written beautifully, and I lost sleep reading the second half. so good!

I am now reading Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close and already hooked :)

Finished A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore about 3 days ago, really liked that, it was so funny, definietly one of the funniest books i've read. Will definitely get more of his books to read in the future. So thanks Lori for the original recommendation, wasn't disapointed at all.

Now i'm currently onto to Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella. Enjoying it so far and am about half the way through. Scary thing is i notice some of her tendancies in myself, though definitely nowhere near as bad.

message 14618: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ Dead tired...
I just finished Blindness. Lori, I am sorry to say, but this was not one of my favorites! I really enjoyed the concept of the book, but it was way too difficult for me to read. I constantly found myself re-reading many long run-on sentences to figure out who was talking and who was just thinking.

I did want to stay up and finish it though, because I wanted to see what happened. I did not enjoy the ending; thought it was weak. Sorry Lori! :-/

Cristy, you are welcome :) Glad you enjoyed it!

Michelle, oh no... You know, I realise that it is not a book for everyone. It is very different from what most people are used to reading. At least you gave it a shot. If his style isn't too your liking, I would not recommend any other of his novels, since he uses the same run-on sentence and non puncutation throughout them all. Personally, I find his writing refreshing and his story ideas are wonderfully intriguing!

Kate | 119 comments I finished Graceling and enjoyed it, though I think it could have been fleshed out a little more, The journey and the changing emotions built up a to a climax that seemed a bit anticlimatic for me, but nonetheless it was a fun read, and I'll be looking out for her next one.
I've now startedSnow Flower and the Secret Fan its heart breaking and I haven't been able to put it down.

Estrella, I read it a couple of years ago. I had moments i hought it was wonderful and others that I had my known Marquez feeling: one that thinks the story is weird, no clue what it is about...but there is some unknown thing in it that makes me appreciate it anyway. I di like the book in the end and was glad to have read it.
Ae you reading it in a golden, brownish hard cover? That is mine and loved to touch it:-)
Enjoy!

Kate I loved The snow flower.... I liked the way it was written, the image created and the story. But I am afraid to read another of her books because i have a feeling they are different and that I won't have the same feeling. Want to hold on to this feeling:-)

I recently read Shanghai Girls A Novel by Lisa See and I enjoyed it. It definitely has a different feel to 'snow flower', with different characters facing different situations, but I'm glad I picked it up. Though I think I will enjoy snow flower more if it keeps up :) The descriptions of footbinding definitely stay with you, its so sad.

I started Peony in Love and it was very good from the little I read.

Wow! It's been awhile since I've been here, crazy, crazy months. Anyways, I'm reading Black Cathedral and it's great. Usually from September on I go on a horror binge.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Just finished White Teeth - Zadie Smith and this is my opinion I would like to add that I have listened to the audio of this today. I am so glad its over with. Sorry to say it wasn't my cup of tea. But as it was on my list to read, its over with. Hated the language that some of them used. I also felt sorry for the characters and their faiths, as I have a best friend who is a Jehovah Witness.

I have no idea whether I feel like readin anymore of hers after listening to this.

Now I am going to read Five on a Treasure Island - Enid Blyton

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I think I will need several in between books while reading The tales and legends of irish peasantry. Starting The Moon Is Down

message 14635: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ Like I posted earlier, I finished Blindness in the wee hours of the night last night, and I have started Blue Moon by Alyson Noel which is the second book in the series The Immortals.

There is nothing like a good, cheesy YA novel to cleanse the mental palate. I'm already about half way through it and just started it only an hour ago.

I really like the silliness of it and have to say it's definitely a guilty pleasure in between all the more complex fiction I've been reading lately.

message 14641: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I am finally getting around to Dead Until Dark. I also picked up a book from the library yesterday called A Girl Made of Dust by Nathalie Abi-Ezzi. Haven't heard anything about it but for some reason I was drawn to it. I can tell you this, they are two very different books.

I would definitely recommend Outliers. He has a very different way of looking at success that makes you think about the way the world works. I haven't read his other books, but I liked this one enough that I might try them. It's one of those non-fiction books that's written well enough that it goes by quickly, never getting too dry.

Hello Kate and Jeane.

This past spring I read two of Lisa See's books. I actually read Peony in Love A Novel first, on loan from a friend, and loved it so much. I then read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, from the library, about 4 weeks later and also loved it. I would suggest that you do not hesitate to read Peony in Love A Novel. It is equally beautiful, haunting and memorable. If I had to pick between the two, Peony comes out on top. As I said though. I loved them both!

I could not finish it...it has been on so many lists to read that I thought something was wrong with me...I have taken Zadie Smith books off my to- read list.

Thank you for the recommendation, Jennifer! I'll definitely keep an eye out for that one. It looks really good too. I love the settings of these novels.

Viki, I listened to it and the words and language that came from them was like ok, not what I would expect from religious people neither.

Finished Confessions of a Shopaholic yesterday which i enjoyed.

Have now started on Motley Crue - The Dirt which is so far interesting and just a bit gross, I think it will get both more interesting and more gross the further i get into it.

I love that book Jayme! Food for thought describes it perfectly! Have you read Blink? It's also by Malcolm Gladwell. After I've fed my fiction fix a little more, I'll bhe reading another one of his books, The Tipping Point. Have you read this one?
