Vicki I am about halfway through Physick Book of Deliverance Dane. I start teaching the Crucible next week and I thought this would be interesting to read at this time.

Michelle♥ Paula,

I have not read Mystic River yet, but I picked it up today among the other thousands of books at this great booksale in my town! I am so curious to read all of Dennis Lehane's pieces now. Shutter Island still has me thinking about the characters and the extreme plotline. I am still in love with it! I've even dreamt about it!

The Book Thief is going just ok. Not what I thought it was going to be, but I think it's because I still have Shutter Island on the brain...

message 14457: by Michelle♥ (new)

Michelle♥ oh P.S.

To Kill A Mockingbird is on my Top 3 lists of all time. It is actually number one on the list!

I really found that book overwhelming... I enjoyed the book and found that the subject matter disturbing...more like racial profiling and camps for Japanese Americans during WWII than I am comfortable with.

Mystic River is the only other one I've read and really enjoyed it. I do own the others and hope to get them soon, although I don't like to read an author one right after the other. I'm almost 100 pages into "Shutter Island" so just getting into it.

Amber Anderson (amabre) In the Forest by Edna O'Brien. The first couple of chapters were pretty depressing although compelling. I can tell this is going to be good-love the writing style and the Irish slang.

I like O'Brien's writing and In the Forest is one of her best. Everything of hers that I've read so far is kind of depressing but well worth reading.

I am still not sure what I thought of The Almost Moon! It was a strange read... I was really disturbed! I usually am not disturbed to this extreme with anything I read but this book gave me nightmares! Creepy! Overall I really enjoyed reading it! I would recommend it! Like I said though... a very different novel!

Lauren, like you I found it very disturbing. It took me a couple of days to really digest the story but after doing so, I really did like the book. It is a very difficult read, but after looking at it from the point of mental illness, you get a better understanding of the why's and wherefore's of what was done. I almost stopped reading it but was glad that I had finished it. It's one I still think about.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Catching Fire and absolutely loved it. I think this was a rare case where the sequel was even better than the first! For me anyway. Now I can't believe I have to wait for the next one to come out!

Now I'm reading a little fairytale called Once Upon a Marigold. It's cute so far.

Liz I just finished She's Not There for a class earlier tonight, and need to start Guyland later this week. I'm also working on Lady Audley's Secret for my Vic Lit book club and New Moon (although that one's on the back burner right now).
Also, I keep hearing talk about how good Hunger Games is. I think I see in amazon order in my future.

Joy, I did read mixed reviews before reading this but I had high hopes. I started out loving it but, in the end, it did not live up to my expectations - just way too much going on for me. I would not recommend moving this ahead of other books on your list but I am sure that there are others here who will disagree. That's what I love about Goodreads!

I'm only on page 39 of Naked Lunch, but so far, yes I am. It was confusing at first, so I re-read the first couple of pages, but I'm getting into the language and style of it. So far it's about as crazy as I thought it'd be.

But I can say I thoroughly enjoyed The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test. It was informative, funny, and at times confusing as h***, and really great.

You should really read them both. :)

Vicki wrote: "Have you read Thousand Splendid Suns? I loved that one."

I loved The Kite Runner and I really want to read this one too, but so far I haven't gotten around to buying it. Maybe on my next excursion...

If you like to read about that time in history, two great books are Acid Dreams by Martin A. Lee and Bruce Shlain and Can't Find My Way Home by Martin Torgoff. Both talk quite a bit about the beat generation, as well as the hippie subculture. Both were also well-written and fun reads (at least in my opinion!).

I've been wanting to read Naked Lunch and just never seem to get around to it. I'm going to add it to my "to-read" list and order it from Amazon this week. No more procrastination!

message 14499: by Dan (new)

Dan | The Ancient Reader (theancientreader) Asa and Darcia,

I'd like to hear what you think of Naked Lunch when you finish it. I thought the first 40 pages or so weren't too bad but after that it went downhill fast.
