Beth Ann (bagrover) I just started The Queenmaker by India Edghill. I think it'll be pretty good.

I've been gone for a few months, it's been crazy crazy crazy here. Got a few other books done since then. Just finished Empire Falls by Richard Ruoso, anyone read that? Not sure if I really cared for it much, I'm on the fence.

I won this book too but haven't had a chance to read it yet. It's the first book I've won in a giveaway and it was fun to get a pre-released book. Glad to hear you liked it!

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments I had to take a hiatus from reading as much as I would have liked these last couple of months due to un frseen circumstances but I'm back on track and just finished Grapes of Wrath...which was long and boring. But I'm currently read Me:Stories of my Life by Katherine Hepburn and loving it.

Oh ,I thought it was one of his better books. The only one I did not care for was The Winter Of Our Discontent. And welcome back.

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Really? I loved Of Mice and Men, and was kind of hoping for something more similar to that I guess. Or maybe I just had to over anaylize everything, but I found it dry and tedious...tis all.

message 14058: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (jeffsmamakat) Just ready to start "The Granny" by Brendan O'Carroll. Looks like it has over 4 star rating, so it should be good. Ive had it on my bookshelf for some time, so I guess its time to read it!

Well yes I must admit Of Mice And Men was exceptional.
Did you try Tortilla Flats?

message 14060: by Juniper (new)

Juniper (jooniperd) Hello!

Luck by Joan Barfoot is what I am reading right now. It is written by Canadian author Joan Barfoot. I am about halfway through and finding it very compelling - the kind of book you have to take a pause from every now and then to digest and think about what you have read. I am hopeful the strength of story and writing are sustained for the second half of the novel.

This book was on the shortlist of nominees for The Giller Prize in 2005. http://www.scotiabankgillerprize.ca/ The Giller is the richest literary prize for fiction awarded in Canada each year. The 2009 long list is being announced on September 21st and I can't wait to see which books make it this year.

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments Carol...Totilla Flats is on my list, as in Canary Row, but I haven't actually read them yet. But I defnitly want to.

message 14062: by Carol (new)

Carol They both are really good. John Steinbeck is one of my favorite authors. Let me know what you think of them when you get around to reading them.

message 14063: by Dara (new)

Dara | 88 comments I just finished an ARC book that I won here on Goodreads called Weekends at Bellevue by Julie Holland, MD. It is the story of her years and her evolution as a psychiatrist at NYC's Bellevue Hospital. It is an interesting journey full of humor and sadness, portraying mental illness in a light that hopefully most of us won't have to experience.

Carol I am still on Cold Mountain he he. You would get the joke if you were here. It is a scorcher still. The marine layer won't be in until next week. I also started Back When We Were Grownups-Anne Tyler Back When We Were Grownups by Anne Tyler

message 14069: by Queen (new)

Queen | 74 comments Back When We Were Grownups is a great book Carol. The author touches on inner chatter, you know thoughts we dare not share with anyone. Just when you think that you've missed out on a great person, you realize that the one you chose to build a life with was what you needed. Hope I didn't spoil it for you Carol but this resonated with me.

nah, I can read the end of a book and still enjoy the ride . I have a confession to make I am one of those people who sometimes reads the ending just so I can see if I will like it. I know I know what a kiljoy. Don't everyone boo and hiss at me. (blushing and laughing)

message 14090: by Denise (new)

Denise I am just starting For Us, the Living A Comedy of Customs. I just found this book. The introduction says it all: "From Grandmaster Robert A. Heinlein comes a long-lost first novel, written in 1939 and never before published, introducing ideas and themes that would shape his career and define the genre that is synonymous with his name." I absolutely love all of Heinlein's books. I was first introduced to science fiction and specifically Robert Heinlein by a man I was dating in my late twenties/early thirties. I used to make these very broad all encompassing statements, in this case I hate science fiction. My then male friend said will you read a couple of books and I said sure but I'll hate them. He brought me Stranger in a Strange Land and Time Enough for Love...need I say more? I was hooked, although at the time I said okay, I like Heinlein but no other scifi writer...wrong again...I went on to read Asimov, Bradbury and more. But my first love is Robert Heinlein, I have read every book of his that I can find (I have found all but one and I don't remember now what that was). Thus when I saw "For Us, the Living" I had to read it. I hope the charm is there!

Mosca | 828 comments I've finished reading Black Swan Green A Novel by David Mitchell. I'm still digesting this one; and I may go back and rate it higher.

For a real change of pace, now I'm reading Wizard's First Rule by Terry Goodkind. This book is a recent gift from a favorite nephew, who strongly recommended it to me. So far it seems a bit more escape fantasy than I usually like; but I'm sticking with it for a while and see.

Suzanne | 157 comments I started readingEscapetonight. Another memoir.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finally finished Neil Gaiman's Fragile Things Short Fictions and Wonders. I really enjoyed it, there's just too much going on at work at the moment for me to read as quickly as I usually do.

Now I'm finally starting The Book of Lost Things. I've heard so many good things about it, I'm excited to be reading it!

Mosca, I've read the first two books of this series (Wizard's First Rule & Stone Of Tears). The story is quite detailed and very well told. I hope you enjoy the book(s).

Petra X (petra-x) I'm reading Chicken: Self-Portrait of a Young Man for Rent by Goodreads author David Henry Sterry. Its beautifully-written, a really fabulous read after the rather tedious and snarky Julie & Julia - which I quite enjoyed, but not like this book, different league.

Eva Etzioni-Halevy | 9 comments The book I am reading right now is QUEEN OF SILK by Vanora Bennet. I found it a bit slow at the beginning but toward the middle of the book its pace becomes faster and the book -- more interesting.

For me there is a special magic in reviving the past through novels.

Ha! That's a new concept for me Carol! I guess you can then try to enjoy the journey, and how the story is going arrive at the ending. I'm going to try not to do that, but you've put the idea in my head now though : D
