Ana | 65 comments I'm almost finishing "Skylight confessions", by Alice Hoffman.

Finished Life of Pi... mixed feelings about it. Am now reading The Story of Edgar Sawtelle and am REALLY liking it. It's not the kind of book I usually read but I'm glad I started.

Up soon: The invention of everything else (can't get linky thing to work, so I put in the page.)

Thank you for the recommendation! I just finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society last night and loved it.

The studio just said the funds weren't available to market it. I was going to see this opening weekend. I'm so bummed now.

One of my favorite reads, although I preferred the sections about the creation of the Chicago World's Fair over the "devil"! Enjoy ;o)

I felt the same way after finishing Life of Pi. I LOVED the beginning of the book. The middle section got too long for me, and then the end just through me for a loop. It certainly kept me thinking long after I was finished. I guess maybe that was the point..

message 13709: by JSou (new)

JSou I just started The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco. It's pretty interesting, so far. I love books about books!

I'm also re-reading The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn along with my oldest daughter who has to read it for school. She is unfortunately the non-reader in our house, so I thought it might motivate her more to read if I grabbed a copy as well so we could discuss it as she went along.

Good for you, Jessica! I did the same thing with my non-reader, my younger daughter, for encouragement! ;o)

Mary | 203 comments Dorie, Thanks for Shutter Island information. I hope that the February release doesn't indicate a lack of confidence on the part of the studio - removing it from Oscar consideration etc. Anyhow, as this is Goodreads not Goodfilms, I highly recommend Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane to those who haven't read it!

I picked this up from the library on the suggestion of a friend ... on CD ... and noticed that this package was ONLY part 1! Is it worth it? ;o)

How is The White Queen different from the Tudor series? I've read about 3 and have enjoyed each one ... ;o)

message 13718: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I started to read And Ladies of the Club, but the book is so big that it hurt my back to hold it. I'm going to have to get it on audio or find a good holder or something. Pretty bad when the heft of a book makes it intellectually attractive, but physically impossible.

So, now I am reading the Percy Jackson series, instead.

It's a brilliant book. I started it one night at about 11pm and put it down at 6am, only because it was finished. The elephant involved is a real heroine and it all comes out all right. but from a serious point of view it gives a wonderful picture of America in the depression years and deals in a marvelous and very sensitive way with the problems of physical aging accompanied by an active and eager mind.

Definitely! It's quite a long story, spanning decades, but if you've gotten through Pillars of the Earth, you should be fine with World Without End. Do you have any long road trips planned anytime soon so that you can listen to the audio? :D

Annie (smallbookblogger) | 46 comments Liz WROTE: How is The White Queen different from the Tudor series? I've read about 3 and have enjoyed each one ...

I have read all but the other queen (the newest to pprback)of the tudors and enjoyed them as well. It's different because she is using the story of Melusina (water goddess) to guide/foreshadow throughout the book. Also, this one seems a little happier. Many of the Tudor ones the characters have sad lives painted for them from the beginning or, i felt, the books just seemed cynical, but this one feels almost chatty or optimistic (for lack of a better word to explain). It just feels a little different. Probalby also because it's a new series.

Katie Grill | 1 comments I just finished Home Repair by Liz Rosenberg in prep for my book club this fall. Pleasantly surprised by how much depth is in the book, esp for those of us who know how to nurse a broken heart. This one made me laugh out loud a few times, love the heartbreak recipes sprinkled throughout i.e. "one ambien with a glass of water" for midnight snack. Have tried it! Now I am about to re-read stories of Eudora Welty, it's been a while and I'm suddenly in the mood to read great female American writers. After that tink I'll read Country of the Pointed Firs. I'm on a roll!

message 13725: by Lyn (Readinghearts) (new)

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I just started Love Walked In. Already I can tell I am going to like the characters in this book as much as those in Belong to Me A Novel. Marisa de los Santos has such a wonderful writing style.

The Devil in the White City is a completely fascinating book. It is very strange for knowing myself I would have expected to find the horrors of the murders the most interesting part, but it did not work out that way at all. The building of the exhibition completely took over my imagination. You can find photos of the exhibition if you google Great Chicago Exhibition.

I caught a little bit of the film and was also confused. It was the animations that grabbed my attention. I'm glad that the book clears things up. I look forward to reading it. I always prefer reading a story before seeing it as a motion picture.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Reread The Subtle Knife last night. Still not quite as strong as the other two in the trilogy, but a nice novel.

i started 2 different books today, which i rarely do. The Skin Gods and Every Boy's Got One. two very different books, i'll probably focus on the second one, as it's pretty quick, and i'm not sure i'm up for something darker just yet.

I read Valley of the Dolls a few summers ago. I found it to be a quick, fun read. A few friends and I watched the movie after we all had read the book and enjoyed the campiness of it.

Christine I'm just beginning The Angel's Game (pg.81) by Carlos Ruiz Zafon but I've read on this site that I should've read The Shadow of the Wind first but I just couldn't find it in our local library (have since ordered it). At any rate, I like this novel; so far, so good!

To everyone who posted about Valley of the Dolls - I really have to pick it up and read it! I re-watched the movie last weekend in honor of Sharon Tate's anniversary and just loved it as much as I did years ago. I thought I had the book, but I only have The Love Machine, which I want to re-read also.
