message 13261: by Donna (new)

Donna | 137 comments I finished The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, what a lovely book, and now I am on to Mistress of the Art of Death. A very good mystery and an interesting look at Cambridge during the reign of Henry II.

message 13267: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) | 52 comments I am now done reading The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox (3 stars). Loved the idea of the story but found it a bit confusing to follow. Leave Me Alone, I'm Reading Finding and Losing Myself in Books was very engaging in some parts yet dry in others. I can now say I completely understand why avid readers always have a STACK of books to read, "so as not to address the void after the last page...". Dishwasher One Man's Quest to Wash Dishes in All Fifty States was also a 3 star. I just started Olive Kitteridge because I have seen it mentioned in many reader's reviews and lists.

Carol Trying to get up enough energy to read Moby Dick. I want to read The 19th Wife. Has anyone read it, and if so was it interesting?

message 13272: by Orion (new)

Orion | 6 comments I'm reading The Drowned Life by Jeffrey Ford. I actively seek out Twilight Zone type stories (Stephen King and Richard Matheson are great examples) and I was elated when I picked this book up and saw it was full of stories with supernatural twists.

message 13273: by Wen (new)

Wen (thespoilingone) | 19 comments Well am new here but figured this was a good place to jump right in here.
I typically read several books at a time and right now am working on:
The Dark Queen by Susan Carroll (liking this one, good story and humorous parts)
Knight Errant by R Garia Y Robertson (this is a time travel and good so far)
Life Mask by Emma Donaghue (having trouble getting into)
The Proposal by Lori Wick (first of a series and good so far)
Edward VI by Chris Skidmore (historical account of Edwards VIs life and short reign)

message 13274: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (jeffsmamakat) Well, I finished the Reader the other day and just now finished Blessed Child by Ted Dekker...I like them both a LOT. I dont have the Time Traveler's Wife, so onward and whatwart. Must now pick something new from my "to Read" shelve...oh what will it be??

message 13275: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I finished Drowning Ruth by Christina Schwarz. If I have to read that again I'm going to drown myself. To get the horrible words out of my mind I started reading My Favorite Horror Story. So far my favorite is still Sweets to the Sweet by Robert Bloch. Excellent ending and it will make the dark cobwebby part of your heart cheer.

message 13290: by Assirahc (new)

Assirahc | 3 comments I just finished reading "Unwind" by Neal Shusterman and I'd have to say that it was the best book that I have read all summer. It's a page turner. Here is the opening of the book...it's what made me want to read it straight away.

The Bill of Life
The Second Civil War, also known as "The Heartland War," was a long and bloody
conflict fought over a single issue.
To end the war, a set of constitutional amendments known as "The Bill of Life"
was passed.
It satisfied both the Pro-life and the Pro-choice armies.
The Bill of Life states that human life may not be touched
from the moment of conception until a child reaches
the age of thirteen.
However, between the ages of thirteen and eighteen, a parent may choose to
retroactively "abort" a child . . .
... on the condition that the child's life doesn't "technically" end.
The process by which a child is both terminated and yet kept alive is called
"unwinding."
Unwinding is now a common, and accepted practice in society.
