Petra X (petra-x) I've just finished Babyface A Story of Heart and Bones, couldn't put it down. So I'm back to a bit of light fiction, Lost Girls and Love Hotels A Novel by Catherine Hanrahan who is a Goodreads author.

Donna | 137 comments Finished both Tortilla Flat and The Good Thief's Guide to Amsterdam this weekend. Vastly different books but I enjoyed them both. Now I am finally starting The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society which has been on my TBR list for a long time.

Melody | 564 comments I am currently reading Amsterdam by Ian McEwan and just started listening to Lord of the Flies. Enjoying both.

message 12954: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments Just finished up The Virgin Suicides and I'm not really sure if I liked it or not. It seems like the author really liked to throw in five dollar words here and there for no damn reason. Anyone know what the hell a zeugam is?
I think I'm going to try to finish up Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. It's not quite as entertaining as I'd hoped but maybe it will get better.

message 12955: by Tani (new)

Tani | 137 comments I'm working on John Adams at the moment. I'm on page 129 and have been reading it pretty steadily this evening, but I feel like I've barely started. Still, it's really good. I'm not the kind of person who has ever really been interested in biographies, but I'm definitely finding this one hard to put down.

JG (Introverted Reader) Lauren wrote: "I am reading The Thirteenth Tale! Can't put it down!"

The Thirteenth Tale is yet another past group read. (Do we have good taste or what?) You can go post over there when you're finished if you like.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Cemetery Dance. This was another great thriller from Preston & Child.

Now I'm reading Emma Brown. This author finished up the novel Charlotte Bronte had started before her death. It's pretty good so far.

Finished A is for Alibi, which was just great. Can't wait to read all the rest!!

Now going to read The Stars My Destination a classic (1956!) sci-fi by Alfred Bester. Sci Fi is not usually my genre, but it comes highly recommended by my bookcrossing buddies.

Renata | 67 comments Teresa wrote: "Has anyone read The Gargoyle? I just finished it and am curious what other people think.

Teresa - I read it when it first came out. I really liked it, but I realize it's not for everyone (pretty gruesome in parts, don't you think?) I can't say that the ending was satisfying, but it couldn't end any other way without being too "mushy".

message 12970: by Beth (new)

Beth Diiorio (beth_diiorio) | 52 comments Just finished Kluge The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind (4 stars). Found the content very interesting, not only as it applies to me but also, as a teacher, as it applies to my students (and why some of them just can't memorize their math facts or other useful information :-) I'm reminded of the importance that learning be contextual and am further inspired to keep plugging away at best teaching practices! Also just finished Last Night in Montreal and was very impressed with the fact that this was a debut novel...well written and engaging (also 4 stars). Now I'm reading Mudbound.

message 12971: by JSou (new)

JSou Oooh, I loved The Gargoyle Renata & Teresa! It's one of my favorites I've read this year!

I would love to hear what you think of Norwegian Wood, Fiona. I just finished Kafka on the Shore this weekend, and really loved it. I'm reading The Book of Lost Things now, but I'm thinking of starting The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle next.

I'm not that far into it (60 pages or so), but it's interesting so far. I think it's going to get pretty weird and graphic. I think I know where it's going, but I might be surprised. Didn't realize she had another book - will see how I like this one and check Grotesque out.

message 12976: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I have just finished Amsterdam by Ian McEwan and I liked it. There are many different opinions on GR about his novels but I am keen to read more. The only other novel I have read of his is Atonement and I liked it too.
I am about to start reading Uglies.

Next is Just Like a Man or Pamela Clare's Untamed

Amanda (libbith) | 39 comments Hi, I've just recently joined and thought i'd stick my two cents in! I've joined to try to expand my views on the big scary world of books because all I seem to pick is chick lit and as much as I love it, I honestly believe that all that lovey dovey romance is slowly turning my brain to mush! So i've reached a compromise to read one chick lit and then a "more challenging" novel and finding that I'm loving the other books just as much!

I've just started Reading Black Hills by good ol' Nora Roberts after finishing The Cider House Rules by John Irving. The pile beside my bed to be read also include Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, In Her Shoes by Jennifer Weiner and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë.

Wish me luck!

I've just finished Scar Tissue the Anthony Keidis biography and have now moved onto The Devil Wears Prada by Lauren Weisburger. I wasn't to keen on reading it seeing as though i have seen the movie already (I usually like to do it the other way round) but I thought seeing as though I really liked two of her other books I thought i'd give it ago.

message 12986: by Donna (new)

Donna | 137 comments Welcome Amanda, I like to mix light and more challenging books too. I find I enjoy both types more because of the variety. Happy reading.

Amanda, that is a great challenge for yourself! I was a fan of the chick lit novels back in my early twenties and realised that after awhile I was running out of new plots to read... I tired out. After finding this site, my tastes are all-encompassing (almost!)

Let me know how Lolita goes. I have it here, but havent read it, tho I am a big fan of Nabokov!!

Thia is one of the best books I have read this year. The style is amazing, not a wasted word and the background of ordinary life of really very ordinary people in Nazi Germany is excellent. I loved it supreme champion!!

message 13000: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments I just finished 'The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane' and it was terrific!!!

Also, Renata, did you read 'Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' first? It would really help you with '...Played With Fire.' :)
