Liz, I have to admit, I did chuckle...just a little. But you're so right; a good fairy tale now and then does a body good.

message 12804: by Pollopicu (new)

Pollopicu I'm currently reading "The Count Of Monte Cristo" and "Maria Callas, The Woman Behind The Legend". I'm also leafing through the "cultural dictionary" which I'm in love with. I'm enjoying all of them immensely.

Rachel, dont forget to pop into the CoMC discussion thread, as you go along. Great book!

Renee (pontiacgal501) | 70 comments I am currently reading A Map of the World by Jane Hamilton. Rachel let me know how The Count of Monte Cristo is when you get through. I just love the movie and I have not read the book yet. I have been putting it off because it is a thick book.

JG (Introverted Reader) I finished Trader (Newford Book 7), which just reinforced for me again why I love Charles de Lint.

Now I'm picking up Cemetery Dance. Having read several of these authors' other books, I'm pretty shocked here at the beginning!

I couldn't manage it... put it down, twice, at page 10 or 15. It looked so promising. Let me know if it gets better, I may try again!!

I'm wondering if anyone is interested to come and pop a quick vote on the poll The Most Disturbing Book Ever Written. I'm curious to know which books have given people the heebie jeebies so I can add them to my shopping list. Cheers!

I've heard so much about The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I'm going to have to get that. I bought Best Friends Forever the other day and got to see Jennifer Weiner - and hear her talk for an hour...she was hilarious. Got my book signed too :)

Katie, I just loved that book - isn't the narrator just perfect for it?! The whole series is good, and some are great, like this one.

Suzanne, I have not read any of Alice Hoffman's other books yet, but I started The Story Sisters and it was just plain strange! I gave it an honest shot, I read like 150 pgs but ultimately just gave up and and stopped. It was a really unusual book.

message 12832: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments Okay, I finished 'The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane' last night.
Really one of the most outstanding books that I have read in a long time.
I was very moved by parts of this book, and it dealt with subject matter that I never would have been inclined to purchase before.

I highly recommend this book to ALL of you. I can't wait to hear what you all have to say!!!

This is why I love this group...it makes you take chances with books you may never have picked!!!

Jennifer Eklund (jennifere) | 54 comments Lori wrote: "That's great that you got the chance to meet an author face to face!"

It was pretty cool. I've never gone to a book signing before, so I have nothing to compare it to, but I must say Jennifer Weiner was great. She even took a minute to chat with me after I told her that my baby girl (due any day) will be named Addie, which is one of the main characters in Best Friends Forever. The name choice is totally coincidental, by the way. I didn't even know she had a new book coming out when we chose it.

Someone over the weekend was raving to me about this book as well. The title alone caught my attention at the bookstore weeks ago, but I think now I really should buy it or check to see if my library has it!

I totally agree, my husband did a stufy of modern American detective novel while working on his Ph.D and introduced me to reading James Lee Burke.I used to turn my head away from detective novels, but James Lee Burke is a living breathing American writer who is a Dostoevsky of American detective novel. I think of him as a living classic. When I read his books I savour every word.I am going to read "Rain Gods" in August.
