Emily I just finished "King Solomon's Mines" by H. Rider Haggard - pretty incredible story! Now I am on to The Monsters of Templeton by Lauren Groff. It is great so far and living in Upstate NY makes it feel extra close to home.

Atlas Shrugged - Ayn Rand. It took me almost 2 weeks to get through that one. I found it interesting, but I just couldn't seem to keep going in it.

For some reason I felt that way with "Nineteen Minutes".

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished The Eight and i really liked it. i'm excited to discuss it with the rest of the people in my book group at the end of the month. even though the book is older it never really seemed that way. i will defininetly be recommending this one to others!

message 12655: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) I finished the Twilight series yesterday, and I have to say, I was satisfied with the way the series ended.

Now, I'm reading The Secret Life of Bees, and I'm going to start The BFG, as well.

I'm almost done with Breaking Dawn, but I don't want it to end! :( The whole series was so good.

Lyn - I am right there next to you in the minority of people who didn't like the Book Thief. I did push my way through the entire book and found it cute enough but can't really say I enjoyed it.

message 12659: by Shona (new)

Shona (anovelobsession) I just finished The Book Thief and it did take me a few chapters to get in to it. After that, I really got into the story and starting enjoying the way the author wrote it. It's a story that will stay with me for a very long time.

Now for something a little lighter, I'm reading The Accidental Bestseller by Wendy Wax.

I'm still not settled with the ending. I thought something else was going to happen, so I was pretty upset. And I'm going to watch the movie next week...that's when it comes out here in the Philippines. What did you think about the ending?

***SPOILER ALERT!!!!***

I was quite happy with the ending. It was a dramatic shock, totally unpredictable...I had to read over it like 10 times for it to sink in. I think it also shows that although you can try and save your child as much as possible, as was the case with Kate, sometimes you just cannot save them (Anna). However, watching the film made me more aware of how Kate wanted it to just end so maybe the movie ending was better in that sense.

Finished the 7th Sookie Stackhouse book yesterday (definitely dead) and have decided to give them a break and read something completely different.

So i'm reading Anthony Keidis' autobiography Scar Tissue, not really a red hot chilli peppers fan but i read the blurb and thought he had a pretty interesting story so i thought i'd give it a go. Not to far in so i don't know if i like it yet.

message 12671: by [deleted user] (new)

Hi all, back from the hills... spent 10 lovely days in the mountains (despite the presence of my MIL *wicked snicker*).

Read The Book Thief (which I adored), Into Thin Air A Personal Account of the Mt. Everest Disaster (which was interesting and horrifying), and The Importance of Being Earnest (even better reading it than seeing it performed).

Am now reading The Three Musketeers, and am having a lot of fun. The Eyre Affair is up next!!

I read Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society last week, and I loved it as well. At first I thought the format of correspondence would be distracting, but I ultimately found it to be really clever and engaging. Glad you enjoyed it as much as I did.

I share your love of the Inkheart trilogy, and loved it even more in audiobook. I will be listening to them again, so am hoping they'll work their way into coming challenges.

Suzanne, please let us know what you think of the movie. My son & I have Sally's reservations about the movie, but it would be great to see and hear a well-done Silvertongue & Dustfinger.

message 12682: by Katie (new)

Katie Suzanne/Sally/BJ Rose ~ I loved Inkheart as well and I would recommend not seeing the movie. I was very disappointed with it. So many things were left out and they took a huge amount of artistic license with the plot.

Wendy ~ That's not crazy at all! I re-read books 1-6 and watched all the movies too before going to see the new Harry Potter (which is fantastic!)

I just started reading Anna Karenina I'm enjoying it, and I hope that it stays interesting since it is a very long book.

Wendy, to reply to your question about the Sookie books vs the show, both are similiar in alot of ways. You dont want watch the show if you plan on reading the books only becuase you could potentially spoil yourself...

The changes they made in the show totally work for me. I love them both in thier own special ways :)

The series is a lot of fun, though a bit predictable. I like to read them as a quick "palate cleanser" between more serious reads. The characters are certainly quirky and fun, and it's always interesting to see what trouble Stephanie and her gang are going to get into next!

message 12699: by Mel (new)

Mel (melcdn) | 90 comments I read Hamlet and then The Story of Edgar Sawtelle back to back. I think this helped me to appreciate Edgar Sawtelle because I was able to objectively appreciate the fact that it was a tragedy during my bouts of weeping. If a book is good if it succeeds in making you feel something for the characters it is a winner and I gave it five stars. I also finished Lolita (Audio Book) in the car this morning. Also wonderful and I felt something there as well (horror and disgust for HH) besides an aesthetic appreciation for the beauty of Nabokov's words. Jeremy Irons does an excellent narration and I think the first person narrative and the poetic use of language in this book lends itself really well to the audiobook format.

I'm about to start Three Men in a Boat for a more lighthearted change and need to find a new audiobook for my next long drive. Any suggestions?

I'm liking Emma so far...there's some chapters that I get bored in, but then the next chapter picks up for me. And P&P is on my tbr...hopefully I can get around to it soon.
