I'm sure he will! Remember his performances in Primal Fear, and American History X.

I find that BBC version utterly charming.

Banner of Heaven is a heavy book. I listened to it a while back and there is a lot to absorb.

It's a very good adaptation, and not just because Colin Firth is in it :)

Jenna | 224 comments Lori...You asked about the Secret History. I just finished and it was pretty good. I liked the story and the characters, however I feel that it really was a bit long. Towards the end it was dragging and I just wanted it to be done. I did end up liking it though. I hope you like it when you read it!

Now onto Kafka on the Shore. This is for a face to face book club.

Kristin (kg05) | 310 comments I finished up "Diary of a Mad Bride" last night and loved it, I definatly want her second book now.

I started Cranberry Queen afterwards last night, im about 50 pages in and its ok. It's not the best but its not the worst.. It's fairly short so it should be a quick read.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams. I thought it was great, but I was crying my eyes out for the last half of it and was still crying about ten minutes after I put it down. It was a bit depressing and left me a bit pissed off about the whole subject matter. So, I decided to pick up something a bit more uplifting. I'm now going to start Starting From Square Two by Caren Lissner.

message 12513: by Kate (new)

Kate | 119 comments I just finished Jane Eyre and now I'm onto Don't Panic, Douglas Adams & the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy by Neil Gaiman. I quite liked Jane Eyre, even though classics aren't exactly my favourite, I'm glad I picked it up.

message 12514: by Debby (new)

Debby | 3804 comments I started reading A Theory of Relativity last night. Very emotionally gripping, as I have a daughter and son-in-law basically the same age as the couple in the book, whose youngest daughter is the age of the daughter in the book. I haven't read anything by Jacquelyn Mitchard in a while. This onw is captivating so far.

message 12515: by Karen (new)

You can't lose from that choice! It's an embarassment of riches!

message 12518: by Lieran (new)

Lieran | 1 comments This is my first post in this community after lurking for a while, so ... hi. :)

The BBC version of P&P is much superior to anything out there. Bridget Jones's Diary does a great job of working the nuances of both Austen and homage to the BBC mini into the text and then later the casting and a snippet of the film into the movie. Incidentally, ITV's Lost in Austen has a bit of fun with the swimming in the lake scene as well (Netflix'd it). Just recently, I bought Pride and Prejudice and Zombies and open it up sometimes to laugh at the Unmentionables (aka, Zombies). Can't say it is a /great/ book, but it is definitely entertaining.

I just finished reading A Madness of Angels Or The Resurrection of Matthew Swift, which was amazing. There's a bunch of stuff in my To-Read stack, but carrying around Managing For Dummies® and Leadership for Dummies, which I'm reading in the hopes to pick up the skills. :P Both were at the Goodwill bookstore for $2.99 and $3.99 respectively.

Bag of Bones was awesome, by the way. I love most King, not because of the shock value, but the way he evokes a setting or fleshes out a character, such as a sheriff that he kills off immediately after doing a 30-page flashback to describe her life in The Tommyknockers. Finding her dead was terrible, but finding her dead after just being walloped with her life story was even worse. That made more impact than any gory decapitation could ever achieve.

message 12519: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments I just finished Saving Faith by David Baldacci. The last 200 pages of this book were fantastic. Made up for the slow pace at the beginning.
I'm going to start a Binchy book. The Scarlet Feather.
It's been a while since I have read one of hers.
The Glass Lake was one of my favorites.
Hope this one is good.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm about halfway through The 19th Wife and i'm really enjoying it. hoping to finish it in the next day or two. then i'll probably start The Eight while STILL working on John Adams. i'm going to finish that one if it kills me!

message 12521: by Debby (new)

Debby | 3804 comments Hey Kellie!
I'll have to go back and finish Saving Faith. A few years ago I started reading it, but lost interest in it took it back to the library. Knowing that the last 200 pages are fantastic will keep me motivated. I generally really like Baldacci's books. So, I'll give Saving FAith another try.
I think you'll also like Scarlet Feather. There are some really interesting characters in that book and the story is very engaging. Binchy's newesst book Heart and Soul is really good!

Welcome Lieran! I also "lurked" for a while before deciding to jump into the discussions. I look forward to reading your posts on other threads on TNBBC.

Thanks for the offer, Kellie. I have to do all my fiction reading by CD or tape. Due to my visual disability, reading is a very slow process. Listening to a novel keeps reading enjoyable for me!!
I just reserved Saving Faith from my local library. I'll keep you posted on how it goes!

message 12528: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments I am currently reading 2 books. The first is Woodrow Wilson and the Roots of Modern Liberalism. I force myself to read a chapter a day to get through it. The information is interesting, but the book is very difficult.

As an easier quick read, I'm reading Saving Grace by Baldacci. I see that several people are discussing it right now. I'm about 200 pages in and am enjoying it. I can't wait for the last 200 if they are even better.

message 12533: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I finally finished The Name of the Wind and really enjoyed it. I'll definitely be picking up the next book. After such a long read I'm really happy to be reading something different.

I'm starting Sworn to Silence, the beginning of a promising new mystery series. The protagonist, Kate Burkholder, grew up in the Amish community of Painters Mill, Ohio before leaving it for the outside world and the study of law enforcement. Now she's recently been appointed Chief of Police in her former hometown and must face both her family and solve a recent murder that threatens to dredge up her past.

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i finished The 19th Wife tonight, and i'm really glad my library book group chose this. it was a very unique story, told in a unique way. i was so in to it, i even dreamed about aspects of it last night. that almost never happens, so i know it was a good book!

i'm debating on starting The Eight or reading more in John Adams tonight. i know what i should do, but that doesn't mean i'll follow through with it.

message 12538: by Cindy (new)

Cindy (cindyreece) I've just started Tallgrass by Sandra Dallas.

The book is about the Japanese internment camps during WWII.
It was selected by our local libraries for Linn Area Reads. They are comparing it to To Kill a Mockingbird and our local community theatre is presenting that play this summer.

So far, so good

message 12540: by Vicki (new)

Vicki I finished two books, Olive Kitteridge by Elizabeth Strout, a book of short stories which either directly or indirectly revolve around Olive, a rather hard to deal with woman. I also read Ya novel, Incantation by Alice Hoffman. It was a quick read, but definitely heartbreaking.

message 12541: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I'm reading At Freddie's by Penelope Fitzgerald, but I picked up my next book and now I can't put it down. Its Thomas Keneally's Searching for Schindler A memoir. Its about how he came to hear of the story of Oskar Schindler and write the story that became the film and book Schindler's List (or in the US, Schindler's Ark). Its wonderful.

Elhara | 15 comments I'm a little more than halfway through The Guernsey Literary Potato Peel Pie Society. This is another book I had no idea what the story was about before I read it. It's a little slow but I am coming to enjoy the pace. With today's communication in an instant, it makes me long for the lost art of letter writing.
