Anansi Boysby Neil Gaiman. This is my first book of his and is outside of my usual genre but I have to say tha tI am enjoying it. Jenn, what do you think of American Gods and have you read other stuff by Gaiman, is it worth it to pick up another? I don't hink I would dive right back in but perhaps in the future...

message 12106: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I started Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire over the weekend and it's going to be a faster read than the first 3, I can already tell. I'm really into this one. I'm thinking I'll meet my goal in time.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Read Monk's Hood The Third Chronicle of Brother Cadfael last night (I had insomnia), which was a nice little Ellis Peters. I'll probably roam the house today, searching for what I can devour.

Can't wait for the paperback to come out! It looks like such a great book; I want to buy it now, but I'm too cheap to get a brand new hardback.

Linda - I expect the talk on this title will be quite interesting - the club has a wide range of tastes. As a confirmed fantasy reader (among other things) I found the time travel element to be very tame, but the book caught my interest in other ways. The strain on the characters' relationship made the minute attention to detail very poignant, with the message to live in the moment.

JG - based on similar taste, I thought you might not struggle too hard with A Land Remembered. Nice to see it wasn't a chore for you!

I haven't read it yet but two completely different friends loved it and I saw several people buying it in bookshops....

message 12113: by Marcella (new)

Marcella (marcella_reads) | 2 comments I'm reading Prague by Arthur Phillips. It didn't get too many favorable reviews but I really like it. The author does an excellent job creating a mood in each scene.

Really loved this one. Tempted to purchase the second one in hardback with a book token.

message 12115: by Jamie (new)

Jamie I'm reading Big Stone Gap right now, but I'm not enjoying it as much as I thought I would. The writing is bothering me (she uses really short sentences all the time) and the dialect is getting to me, as well. I hope it gets better soon!

message 12116: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (syellico) Finally started The Woman in White and The Painted Veil on audio. I am enjoying both so far!

message 12117: by Frank (new)

Frank Staniszewski (fstan) | 1 comments I also recently read the Girl with the Dragon Tatoo.
Absolutely loved it and could not put it down.
I cant believe it's ranking is not higher.
Cannot wait for the second book in the trilogy to come out.

I haven't quite decided what I think about American Gods. It's alot different from what I thought I was getting, so it's a bit of an adjustment. However, it's already had some interesting twists and I'm on a chapter in, so I'm giving it a bit longer.

I did read in an interview with Gaiman that American Gods was a hate it or love it type of book based on his talks with fans... so maybe it's not the best judge of his work???

OOps... I forgot to answer.. This is my first novel by Gaiman, but I've heard great things about his work for quite awhile now.

Lori Ann | 105 comments I'm working on Birdsong by Sebastian Faulks. I'm liking it but for some reason its taking a long time to get through, def not a quick read.

message 12123: by Leanna (new)

Leanna (leannerd) | 73 comments I just finished Magyk, the first Septimus Heap book by Angie Sage. It was cute, reminded me of the first Harry Potter book (when everyone was so innocent!); however, it was a little it predictable for my taste. Still, very good.

I'm still reading The Gunslinger Born and am getting ready to start The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I've heard many good things about it, so I can't wait to start.

message 12124: by Lee (new)

Lee I just finished "The Reincarnationist" by M.J. Rose (it was good, could have been a bit better) and I have started on "The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova.

JG (Introverted Reader) So many good books you guys are reading! The Book Thief (Yay!!!!!), Guernsey, Dead Until Dark, Classics of the Macabre, Neil Gaiman, The Audacity of Hope, The Name of the Wind, Forever Odd, Harry Potter... All books I really enjoyed!

Jamie, I loved Big Stone Gap, but one of my friends gave up on it. Maybe I just have a soft spot for books set in the Appalachians! :-)

I finished Throne of Jade and it was pretty good. The series is fun, but this was mostly filler. It was cool to read about dragons in China though. And there was one really fun battle that I wish had gone on longer.

Now I'm finally finishing up some westerns my Dad loaned me. The last one he has is Ambush. It's a decent series if you're into that kind of thing.

message 12126: by Andrea (new)

Andrea | 11 comments I too loved the "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" which I just recently read. Had a little bit of everything. Currently reading "The Zoo Keeper's Wife"

Katie (katieisallbooked) | 109 comments I started The Book Thief on audio yesterday. It's been a little tough to get into, but I'm starting to enjoy it.

Still reading Asta in the Wings in print.

message 12128: by Madison (new)

Madison Paine (madisonpaine) I'm reading two books at the same time. I have a headache but I can't stop. The first is Standing Tall: A Memoir of Tragedy and Triumph by C. Vivian Stringer (Rutgers Women's Basketball Coach). Very inspirational read. I am also reading a fascinating book called So You Don't Want to Go to Church Anymore by Wayne Jacobsen and Dave Coleman. I am a fan of the Shack and these guys are his friend. Takes a minute to get into but fascinating read.

message 12129: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am reading Sold, The Gunslinger and The Pelican Brief. I usually onlu read one and listen to one, but Sold is really just a collection of very short vignesttes, almost poetry, I have read Pelican Brief a few times, but am reading it to refresh for a group read, and The Gunslinger is Stephen King, so no threat of losing interest or my train of though there!

message 12130: by Dree (new)

Dree I am only reading two books right now (anyone impressed by my self control? No? oh well...).

Last night I started Miles from Nowhere by Nami Mun. I am 30 pages in, I don't know how great it will be, but I am sure it will be quick and worth reading.

And I am still working on A Thousand Years Over a Hot Stove. I like it, it's interesting (though being a trained historian...the author is clearly not).

And, for the first time in ages they are both books I just pulled off the library shelf! With a bit of a lull in my library queue (though The Help should be coming in a week or 2, finally!), I found the one looking for a cookbook and the other on the "new fiction" shelf. It's been a long time since I read something I hadn't already heard of.

message 12131: by Michelle (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Just finished Dead Until Dark yesterday, which was a really fun read. I'm starting Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight An African Childhood by Alexandra Fuller.

Susan Norman | 3 comments I am reading Breakfast with Buddha by Roland Merullo for a book group meeting. Very enjoyable.

message 12136: by Tara (new)

Tara Just finished The Woman in White so I'm starting some heavy non-fic, Quantifying and Controlling Catastrophic Risks, and if I can find it at the library, I'd love to pick up The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Seems like it's been pretty well-received and now that it's the July group read, I'm even more motivated to start it!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I started In the Last Analysis, by Amanda Cross, last night. This is an early one of hers - 1964, I think.

message 12138: by Elhara (new)

Elhara | 15 comments Still Alice by Lisa Genova. I just started this one last night. I keep myself busy during the day, reserving reading time to before sleep. I'll cross my fingers that I continue to evade the loathed insomnia I have been plagued with for so long. I attribute my recovery to reading till I feel a book is almost falling out of my hand. Anyway, Still Alice was immediatly addicting and I have already picked it up twice this morning. The fear it invokes is startling. Something that middle and above age people may have to deal with. OK....gotta go. I feel the book calling me again. I'm sure I will finish this one today.

It sat on my to-read shelf forever too. It was so good, I've passed it on to several people since I finished. Good stuff! =)

message 12141: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments Usually, I read one book at a time, but right now I am working on three. I'm reading An Inconvenient Book Real Solutions to the World's Biggest Problems outside, but it's really hot most of the time, so I haven't read very much yet.
I also started reading Liberty and Tyranny A Conservative Manifesto, but can only read a few chapters at a time. So, I also started The Chosen. It is easy to read. I will probably end up finishing it today or tomorrow.

message 12146: by Olive (last edited Jun 23, 2009 05:40PM) (new)

Olive (dearestolive) Just finished reading Breaking Dawn, which rounds up the Twilight saga. I could not have anticipated how much I would love this series, the last two books of the series in particular. And to continue with my teen-series-obsessed vibe on this post... I'm re-reading Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Next week I'll be in the hospital after surgery so I'm sure I'll have a lot of new reads knocked out in the next couple of weeks.

message 12147: by Carol (new)

Carol (caroldias) Yay for Breaking Dawn, Amanda.
I think I´ll be reading it again next week :)

The Historian was sooooo good. It took me a while to get through it, but it was an amazing vampire/questy/historical novel (a million times better than Twilight!)

message 12149: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I'm still reading Tremlett's Ghosts of Spain Travels Through a Country's Hidden Past but I've also started reading Cathy Yardley's Turning Japanese for a change of pace fiction-wise :)

I'm only about ten pages into it and I can already tell that I'm going to like it.
