Allison (sockweasel) | 432 comments Linda, Glad to hear you loved Water for Elephants as well. :) Yeah, I've heard mixed things about The Time Travelers Wife too... I'm encouraged to hear you liked it though, since you and I have similar taste. I'm only about 40 pages in, but really liking it so far. :)

message 11902: by Sofie (new)

Sofie (sofantastic) | 12 comments I've just finished Atonement by Ian McEwan, and I thought it was amazing. It's definitely worth reading.

Now I'm reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. I hope it's good! :)

Oh, and Allison, I've read The Time Traveler's Wife many times. I LOVE it - it's one of my favourite books! I've been wanting to read Water for Elephants for a while. I'll probably read that next. :)

Sofie (sofantastic) | 12 comments That's good, now I'm definitely going to read Water for Elephants soon!

I'm not very far through The Book Thief yet, but it's really good so far, I like the notes that are used. It's very original! :)

message 11906: by Allison (new)

Allison I'm about 3/4 of the way through The Last Dickens A Novel. It's an okay book- not a page turner, but entertaining enough.

Not familiar with it. I have recently bought the Dorothy Sayers translation and am waiting for a quiet moment to read it... sometime in 2035 ; )

Interesting about the Wilde work!

Sallie(GeorgiaGirl) (shuga) Currently I am reading the Sookie Stackhouse series....Dead Until Dark (Charlene Harris)is the first one. I watched the series before I started reading the book & was a little surprised to find that the series follows right along with the first book - at least so far it has... but I am hooked

message 11913: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I just finished Franzen's memoir, The Discomfort Zone (review to come, when I can think of what to say) and have started Penelope Fitzgerald's novel, The Bookshop. I'm still ploughing my way, page by fascinating, multi-layerd page, through Straw Dogs by John Gray.

message 11914: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I am reading a new book called April Oliver and I am really enjoying it so far... almost finished.

message 11915: by Callicore (new)

Callicore (callicorewings) | 2 comments I'm currently reading "In The Woods" by Tana French. I really liked it at the beginning, but my interest is fading.

message 11916: by Allison (new)

Allison I'm getting ready to start Club Dead by Charlaine Harris. I'm really looking forward to it, and wouldn't be surprised if I finished it tonight.

message 11917: by Dara (new)

Dara | 88 comments Well, I stayed up until 0400am finishing True Colors by Kristen Hannah. I really enjoyed it. KH has a talent for showing ups and downs and ultimate love in relationships, whether friends, families, love. She spans a lifetime (at least in the couple books I have read by her) yet doesn't drag or feel too long or drawn out.

message 11918: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments it's been a few days since i've been on, it was a busy weekend for me!

i finished up A Conspiracy of Paper and From Dead to Worse at the end of the week. i started a book on John Adams, and one from Andrew McCall Smith for my library book club. that's tomorrow, and i only have one chapter read. yikes! it's started off pretty good, so i'm hoping it keeps up and proves to be a quick read for me.

message 11919: by Jenna (new)

Jenna | 224 comments Finished up A Dirty Job by Christopher Moore and loved it. Can't wait to read more of his books. I would never have picked this book up if it had not been for hearing about it from this group.
Off to start The History of Love by Nicole Krauss.

message 11920: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne (bellamy22) | 610 comments I loved the HBO 'Ladies #1 Detective Agency" and recorded them all... are Andrew McCall Smith's books as great? I am out here with only a Wal-Mart ( God bless them) and I'm used to book stores tucked around every corner aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhh......
Yes, I Amazon, but hardly an impulse fullfiller!
Anyone remember a detective series about a group of people who designed video games, but also became involved with solving very complex crimes? The head lady of the video biz was getting close to the detective, sounds corny but these were good... I have moved so many times in recent years I have lost(?) some of my books.

message 11921: by Allison (new)

Allison Jenna- I really enjoyed A History of Love. At first, it seemed a little disjointed, but as I read on, everything began to come together and I really became engrossed in it.

It's very interesting the new Oscar Wilde book. I want to own a copy of it so bad! It's around $54 (Can. dollars) and I have to hope it's at a near book shop, mind you, I won't be needing a birthday present after this!

message 11923: by Adrienne (new)

Adrienne Teague (ateague) | 409 comments I'm reading The Book Lover by Ali Smith (I think The Reader is it's UK title). It is a bunch of segments, short stories, and poems she likes. I'm enjoying it, but I can't read it very quickly, for some reason.

message 11924: by Mel (new)

Mel (melcdn) | 90 comments Just finished The Woman in Whiteand have started The Idiot Girls' Action-Adventure Club True Tales from a Magnificent and Clumsy Life. Thought the first one was very good but so far the Laurie Notaro book isn't living up to the other one I read - The Idiot Girl and the Flaming Tantrum of Death Reflections on Revenge, Germophobia, and Laser Hair Removal. I think that might be because the Action Adventure Club is written about her life when she is a fair bit younger than I am and I am not relating as well. I suspect we are closer in age when we get to the stories in the Flaming Tantrum of Death.

message 11925: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Finished The Shunning the other day and found it to be a nice, leisurely read, although not one of my favorites.

Started both Unaccustomed Earth and New Moon and I'm enjoying both of them, so far!

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Re-read Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead last night. Still excellent.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I'm currently reading Dark Places A Novel by Gillian Flynn. I've read Sharp Objects A Novel by her and loved the creepy, eerie feeling of the book. Dark Places looks like it's heading the same way.

Sofie, Sounds like you and Allison and I are on the same wavelength when it comes to certain books. The Book Thief is another favorite of mine and has stayed with me since reading it. If you haven't read Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruis Zafon, that's right up there with the rest. Happy reading!

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Just finished The Perks of Being a Wallflowerand now on to Crank. I'm reading my 3 YA books for the challenge.

message 11934: by Youndyc (new)

Youndyc I just finished Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris. I liked it well enough, but it wasn't fantastic and it wasn't nearly as funny as I expected it to be. Still, if you work in cubicle-land or at least in a very large office, this would probably be very funny for you. I have never worked like that, so some of it was just alien to me.

Have also been reading Under the Banner of Heaven by Jon Krakauer for a few weeks - slow going for me, because I keep interrupting that read for other books.

message 11935: by JSou (last edited Jun 15, 2009 10:04AM) (new)

JSou Finished The Count of Monte Cristo this weekend and squeezed in Club Dead by Charlaine Harris. Now I can't decide whether to start Pride & Prejudice & Zombies, or The Mysterious Island....

Jamie, Perks is one of my favorite books. How did you like it?

message 11937: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Finished The Sweet Far Thing over the weekend - it was good, but my least favorite of the series. I started Tweak Growing Up On Methamphetamines which is OK, but nothing too special. I liked his dad's memoir, Beautiful Boy A Father's Journey Through His Son's Meth Addiction much better. Interesting to see both sides of the story, though.

I haven't been overly impressed with the last couple of books I've read. I need something great to pull me out of my slump. :)

message 11938: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I am audioing The Goose Girl, and reading The Game. I'm on a bit of a YA streak here.

Marianna I just finished The Outsiders and started Tweak last night. I read Beautiful Boy last year and was very moved. Hope Tweak will be just as powerful.

Leila (justsortofreading) Dead Until Dark and I am loving it. I haven't read any other vampire stories besides Twilight. I haven't seen the tv series True Blood either but I look forward to it.

message 11944: by Sarah (Mood Reader) (new)

Sarah (Mood Reader) (bookworm1887) I just finished Addition and I'm either going to start reading Lit Riffs or Snow Crash although I'm a little bit intimidated by how many pages are in Snow Crash but then again it's one of the books that I really want to read.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Just finished Crank. What a quick and interesting read! I enjoyed how different it was style wise. I couldn't believe that I read the book all in one sitting. I didn't mean to. lol

Aww, we are totally on the same wave length with a bunch of books! I definitely second that comment- The Shadow of the Wind is amazing, and I would definitely recommend it if you haven't read it yet.

OH! Linda!! I ordered The Angel's Game (the new one by Carlos Ruiz Zafon). It comes out tomorrow, I'm so excited. :)

I didn't realize that Monkeewrench was a series. I read the first one.

I finished The Woman in White. I really enjoyed that one. I might have to buy a copy, since the one I read was from the library.

I've started a biography of Ray Charles for the Summer Challenge. It is very interesting so far.
