Oooh, I loved Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep, Katie! I still have yet to see Blade Runner, but the book was a great read! Would love to hear what you think about it once you're done!

message 11803: by Petra (new)

Petra Thanks, Mosca and Kathy. I'm not giving up on the book and will finish it. It's not bad; it's just not as interesting as it sounds, I think. Wing Biddlebaum's story is sad and was out of his control but the others seem to make their own sadness. All stories seem to point towards George Willard. Maybe his chapter will pull things together.
Thank you for your inputs.

message 11804: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm reading the Sookie Stackhouse novels. Has anybody read them? They are an easy and quick read. Not a whole lot of depth or character development but an excellent time waster. :)

message 11805: by Breezy (new)

Breezy | 1 comments I joined a while ago, but this is the first time I think I've posted a comment here. I'm currently reading Julie Andrews' autobiography. I think it would be better as a biography... if someone else had written it, or maybe if she'd had a ghost writer? I don't particularly enjoy her writing style: it's somewhat disjointed and she jumps topic every once in a while. However, her life is so terribly interesting that I want to keep reading on. So much that I want to learn about her life: how she became who she is, her family, the people she has loved and hated, what "lucky breaks" helped her become the Julie Andrews we all know today. Sounds a bit corny, I know, but I can't help it! That's just my personality.

Hi Breezy, welcome to the group!
I felt the same way about Cash The Autobiography by Johnny Cash. His life also was very interesting so I wanted to keep reading, but he was also disjointed in his thoughts, but I just figured, "It's Johnny Cash! Who in their right mind would tell him he needs to tone it down?" :)

I've always liked Julie Andrews (in Sound of Music and Mary Poppins particularly), so I might check out her autobiography also. If you like this sort of thing you might also check out Carol Burnett's memoir, One More Time.

I'm done with The Glass Castle, Allison! What a great (true) story! Did you want to discuss it - I wonder if we should start a different thread so as not to create any spoilers? Let me know - and whoever else wants to join in is welcome.

message 11814: by Liz (new)

Liz I've just finished John Dryden's translation of Virgil's Aeneid, which I'd been reading a few pages at a time before bed along with lighter things to balance out school work. Now I'm trying to finish a reread of Great Expectations which I started for a class last semester and didn't quite finish.

Felina, I love the Sookie series by Charlaine Harris. I just finished her last one, Dead and Gone. I'm also a huge fan of the HBO series based on the books, True Blood. Season Two starts this coming Sunday, June 14th.

message 11816: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments Lori, you will love the True Blood show, or at least I hope you do. I just finished watching all of the DVDs and then had HBO hooked up just so that I could get True Blood when the new season starts. I, also, bought the soundtrack and love it.

Felina, I agree that the show does seem to be fleshing out the characters more.

message 11821: by GracieKat (new)

GracieKat | 864 comments I finally finished The Night Before by Lisa Jackson and The Morning After by her also. I'm so happy I'm finished with them. They sucked so bad! Her New Orleans series wasn't too bad but these two were horrible!.
I also read The Birds' Christmas Carol today. It was really short, about 90 pages.

I started The Girl with No Shadow A Novel by Joanne Harris. I was really excited to read it since it's the sequel to Chocolat. It's pretty good so far.

message 11822: by Ladybird (new)

Ladybird (maria712) | 11 comments I just finished Long Way Down by Nick Hornby and didn't enjoy it. I'm now reading Bel Canto and a true crime book called And Never Let Her Go. One book I've been trying to read, but simply can't into it is called Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. Has anyone read this? If so, was it a breeze for you or did you struggle to get into it at first?

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) I just finished The Angel's Game by Carlos Ruiz Zafon....author of Shadow of the Wind....I liked the book but liked Shadow of the Wind better....same talented writer, but different theme.

I am now reading The Wednesday Sisters....sort of chic lit, but good....it is about the bonding between women and how we as women can work and have babies.

Now I am reading Loving Frank by Nancy Horan and I gotta say, this is on my top faves right now. I am only on page 120 but it is great thus far.

Has anyone else read it?

Maria - I read Never Let Me Go earlier this year, and while it wasn't a terribly compelling book I really did enjoy it. It wasn't one I couldn't put down, but I thought the concept was fantastic and I really like the way Ishiguro writes. The style of the book sort of reminded me of John Knowles' A Separate Peace.

message 11832: by Yasmin (new)

Yasmin I've almost finished reading A Thousand Splendid Suns, in tandem with John Keats Complete Poems and Dylan Thomas Omnibus. Since I started A Thousand Splendid Suns, yesterday I haven't been able to put it down. Khaled Hosseini knows how to catch the reader with his style of writing. I can't tell even now if I like it or not. There is so many things to say, complimentary and compliants. But I would recommend it.

i read Loving Frank in the fall for my library book club. it was a great story, and although a lot people felt that Mayma (did i spell that right?) was a trollop and a bad mother, i didn't feel that way about her. the ending is so sad, too. however, FLW was a self-centered man, who was so passionate about everything until it was surpassed by something else, that i had a hard time liking his character as he was portrayed in the book.

Donna | 137 comments Hi Maria and Donna, I read Loving Frank A Novel for my face-to-face book group a while ago and it was a very big hit with everyone. Maybe not a good idea to mention this to a book club, seeming that it is youth literature! But I am enjoying it, busy with Twilight and New Moon is already waiting......

message 11850: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Leila--if you haven't read it already, Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson is pretty good.

I finished Love in the Time of Cholera - Gabriel Garcia Marquez yesterday. I'm continuing withTwilight and starting The Shunning - Beverly Lewis.
