Nelly Paulina (aneelee) trying to get through Jimmy Corrigan The Smartest Kid on Earth. may have to give up though.

message 11602: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Just started God's Mercy:
This is the first volume of the Wolfskin trilogy. Risten, the character the reader meets on the novel's first page, remains the first person narrator in all three volumes. The trilogy begins in 1916 and ends around the beginning of the twenty-first century and follows the destinies of the characters in God's Mercy and their descendants.

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I finally finished readin Bridge of Sighs and I loved it. It took me a long time because I have been very busy but now I am getting back on track and am currently reading The Almost Moon and so far it is a little disturbing! I have read some crazy books but this one seems a little more starnger than my usual but who knows...???

I felt the same way. For me it seems like the author went right off the reservation and started channelling Dean Koontz. Don't get me wrong, I like Dean Koontz but Dexter is and should be something else. Not sure how the fourth book can even come back from that.

message 11607: by Mary (new)

Mary | 203 comments I finished The Piano Teacher by Janice Y.K. Lee. I really liked it but, for me, the ending fell a bit short - a three star ending to a four star book.

Now something completely different - Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane which I am reading ahead of the movie.

I am doing that, too. I read Sorcerer's Stone and will read the others after I finish what I'm reading now. I'm trying to read them all before the next movie. I need a refresher on the last 3. I never read the first 4.

message 11609: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (mamallama) | 130 comments I am currently reading The Help. So far it's grabbing my attention and I think it will end up being a fast read. I've been trying to watch some movies on DVD that I've been wanting to see, also so I'm devoting less time.

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Just finished Water for Elephants! I really enjoyed it! Now I'm either going to pick up The Bean Trees or The Sun Also Rises

The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver? Oh, I recommend that one. It's terrific. Then read the sequel, Pigs In Heaven. I really enjoyed Turtle's story.

I had to read The Bean Trees when I was in middle school. Liked it so much I made my mom read it. I just finished A Stir of Echoes by Richard Matheson. Quick read, kinda like Desperate Housewives with a ghost story told from a male perspective. I really like Matheson's style. It's easy to tell how Stephen King was influenced by him. They both write "horror" stories that end up telling more about how the monster affects the lives of ordinary people. I'm bringing The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman with me to work tonight.

Shutter Island is one of my all time favorites.
Please post your feelings when you are done. I remember wanting to talk to somebody (anybody) about it when I finished!

message 11614: by El (new)

El Rachel, I haven't read Stir of Echoes but have seen the movie with Kevin Bacon a few times. Have you seen it? I've wondered for a while how it holds up next to the book. Anything else I've read by Matheson I have enjoyed - don't know why I keep dragging my feet on Echoes.

I saw the movie a while ago but i did keep picturing Kevin Bacon as the main character, Tom. Except at the end when i pictured Matheson which is weird. I think they updated the ghost story and changed it around a bit. I've been thinking about renting it cuz i remember liking the movie.

I'm up to page 57 - it seems and easy read and it does get more interesting. You still have several pages of financial jargon, etc... to wade through. Good luck! And, I hope you start to enjoy it.

I was so hoping to finish this book last night but still have a bit to go. I think Lamb's ability to portray his characters inner feelings so realistically is one of the reasons I enjoy reading his books. I am still reminded that one act can cause a huge ripple effect. As I said, given the circumstances this isn't far fetched and could easily happen to anyone. Wow! That's a scary idea. I hope you will like it.

Ah, Disgrace. My live book club read that last year. It was quite the discussion when we met about it (we are all women so you can imagine). He was a piece of work. And I must say, I hated the end. (Loved it when he got pelted with spitballs :)

Was the ending a suprise for you Jessica? I was so upse that the damn introduction spoiled it for me b/c I knew what was going on the whole time I read it....
But just a brillant book!

message 11626: by JSou (new)

JSou It was a surprise! I hardly ever read introductions to books until after I'm done with them (I get more out of them that way!) Thank God I didn't read that one! I loved the Atomic Theory explanations and of course the end.

That sucks it gave the whole plot away just in the intro. Did they think everyone in the world had already read the book? Grrr.

I thought the boyfriend/spitballer was just as bad, if not worse... I couldn't like any of the characters and I couldn't justify any of their actions/reactions to the situations. Very weird book.
