Carrie (missfryer) | 453 comments Leanna, I'm reading Angels and Demons too. Are you reading it so you can go see the movie?

message 11557: by JG (Introverted Reader) (last edited May 31, 2009 09:23PM) (new)

JG (Introverted Reader) I thought A&D made a MUCH better movie than The Davinci Code. If nothing else, Tom Hanks's hair is a little better! :-) And Ewan McGregor was great in his character.

I finished The Woods by Harlan Coben. It was solid, but the whole plot just felt familiar from his other books.

Now I'm starting one of my dad's old westerns--War Cry.

Donna | 137 comments I just finished a terrific mystery, Dog Eats Dog. It was a quick read and laugh out loud funny in parts. After watching the movie Burn after Reading I think the Coen brothers should make this book into a movie.

Yvonne I finshed Loving Frank this morning. Ending was such a shock! I was expecting something to happen, just not THAT! I enjoyed the book though.

Mel (melcdn) | 90 comments Just finished The Quincunx which I loved! It was a complete rollercoaster ride and while I got off a little bit dizzy it was an amazing and wild journey. Will take a little break and read something that's a bit more effortless next, thinking Dead and Gone and then start with The Woman in White.

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I'm reading "The Kind One" by Tom Epperson. It's set in 1930's Los Angeles. Danny Landon is a wise guy with the criminal underworld, working for a local mobster. A year earlier Danny sustained a dent in his head from a lead pipe. Now he can't remember anything before last year, and suddenly finds the dirty work he previously enjoyed has become distasteful.

message 11568: by Elhara (new)

Elhara | 15 comments I am almost finished Wally Lamb's The Hour I First Believed. Overall I have enjoyed it. I like Lamb's style. Some flashbacks were introduced out of no where, which I found a bit confusing and seemingly not very important to the basic story line. This feels both disjointed and bland. Unfortunatly I found this less enjoyable as it ventures away from the wake of the traumatic experience that the characters lived through. Hopefully things will pull together in the last few chapters. Every time I read a few chapters I really believe that these turns of events would lead any one of us on this road of disaster. It is not far-fetched at all! I have no idea as to how this book will conclude. Should be interesting.

Fiona, out of curiosity, do you know why A Gathering Light is called A Northern Light in the states? I'm just not sure why it would have been changed. I know Harry Potter was modified because they were worried that the slang wouldn't make sense to Americans (when I first got to the UK, I spent at least the first week thinking, "Why does everyone keep asking me if I'm all right?").
Justine, I'd be curious to hear your opinion of The Blind Assassain! I really enjoyed A Handmaid's Tale and want to read lots more Atoowd (including The Blind Assassain).

Hi Diane!

Although I have read and watched many Holocaust-related stories I really liked this book, found the plot very interesting and written in a simple and direct way; I liked how characters' psychology was described through the entire text and how it makes you reflect after having finished it.

Now I want to see the movie, possibly during next weekend :)

Best regards!

Hi Linda and Yvonne. Wasn't this a great read? I had no idea about the story at all, until I googled Mameh Cheney BEFORE I finished the book....needless to say, it blew the ending for me, but I loved it nonetheless.

Sharon Ellis | 176 comments Always carry a pen and notebook of blank paper, the words you read or the words you are inspired to write take their place at a certain point in your time and are well worth jotting down while they burn in your spirit. Summer is here and the sense of freedom to explore so many new things. For me it was just the ordinary day at the beach one summer when the Angel of the Lord appeared to me so magnificantly. I didn't have a notebook close by and had to run back to my hotel room to write down this experience and the Angel's words after I came back down from heaven! It was later that I realized the Angel's words would always stay with me. I think that is a part of experiencing God. Sharon Ellis Author of Communions With Christ.

Hi Sharon,

This thread is actually for sharing what you're currently reading. All your post does is allude to the book you've written, so this is the wrong thread. Care to share what book you're reading?

message 11588: by Liz (new)

Liz (busy91) Right now I'm working my way through "Odd Thomas" by Koontz.

I'm also doing "Middlemarch" on MP3. That will take a while.

message 11589: by Maureen (new)

Maureen I'm almost finished with Queen of the Road (Doreen Orion), for my face-to-face book club. It's a memoir/travelogue about a couple's one year road trip throughout the U.S. in a bus-converted-into-an-RV. It's been a fun, quick read.

I'm also listening to Kristen Chenoweth's book on audio. Love her!!

Finally, I've decided to read the Narnia Chronicles as my own personal summer challenge. (Never got around to reading these as a kid, for some reason.) I'm more than half-way through The Magician's Nephew (I've decided to read the books in the order that Lewis preferred).

And yay to those reading The Blind Assassin! I loved this book, and hope you all do, too. :-)

Jenna | 224 comments Reading the 3rd book in the Dexter series, Dexter in the Dark. I really liked the first two, but this one isn't really entertaining me. I'm actually really looking forward to being finished with it. Have about 100 pages left to go and I really hope this one ends well.

message 11591: by Yvonne (new)

Yvonne Hi Maureen,
I have also read the Narnia Chronicles. I enjoyed them. Enchanting......I will reread them one of these days. What is the order that Lewis preferred?

I have read Odd Thomas by Kootnz. I have enjoyed most of his books.

message 11594: by Liz (new)

Liz Liz, good luck with Middlemarch! That is definitely one of my favorites.

Maureen, I read all of The Chronicles of Narnia a few summers ago. I had read three of the books but decided I needed to read them all in order.

message 11595: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Disgrace... not quite sure what I think about it. The story starts with a professor getting chucked out of his job for sleeping with a student and continues with self-discovery, the meaning of family, etc. But the "original sin" seemed far less important and interesting than a lot of other sins that were dealt with throughout the book. Have to think about it some more.

Finishing up some re-reads and odds and ends and then will start Portrait of a Lady, which finally turned up. (I was desperately looking for a black book spine... my copy is yellow... oops!)

message 11596: by [deleted user] (new)

Believe me Fiona it gets much better, the begining isn't the best but it does become much more iteresting and suprising.
