Mel (melcdn) | 90 comments Was going to suggest Jen Lancaster if you liked Laurie Notaro (the two have eerily parallel lives and similar writing approaches although Jen directs her sarcasm at external targets primarily whereas Laurie is more self-inflicting). However, I see she is already on your to-read list. Definitely start with Bitter is the New Black which is her best.

Mel

Jamie (The Perpetual Page-Turner) (perpetualpageturner) | 636 comments Thanks for the tip Mel! I guess I will have to bump that up if she is anything like Laurie Notaro!

Kathy (readr4ever) | 510 comments I just finished Dead and Gone Dead and Gone (Sookie Stackhouse, #9) by Charlaine Harris by Charlaine Harris, the latest in the Sookie Stackhouse Southern Vampire series. It was great! I'm not reading Grave Goods (Mistress of the Art of Death, Book 3) by Ariana Franklin Grave Goods by Ariana Franklin, 3rd in the Adelia Aguilar series (1st one was Mistress of the Art of Death).

Mosca | 828 comments After a few false starts, I've finally settled in to reading Quicksilver by Neal Stephenson. I must be on a Stephenson kick.

I've just started it; but it already seems pretty good.

Yvonne, I hope you enjoy Loving Frank. I read it recently and found it to be one of those novels that grew on me as I read it. I would be interested to hear what you think when you finish it.

message 11410: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments I really feel lucky, I have had the good fortune to hit about 4-5 great reads in a row. Magic Hour by Kristin Hannah (4.5), Fidali's Way A Novel by George Mastras (5), Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet A Novel by Jamie Ford (5), The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly (4.3). I am currently reading Where the River Ends by Charles Martin and am enjoying it.

Diane (dianedj) Yvonne wrote: "I am reading Loving Frank. "

Yvonne - my book club read this the end of 2008 - we all liked it and it made for great discussion. Do you anything about the relationship between Mameh Cheney and FLW? I didn't and made the mistake of googling her before I finished the book - don't do that, as it proved to be an ending spoiler. I bought The Women (by TC Boyle) that is also a novel about FLR as told by the 4 major women in life.

message 11412: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I've just started Harvesting the Heart (Jodi Picoult) and I'm also reading Women in the City of the Dead by Helen Watson (not fiction, about poor Egyptian women who live in a 'city' inside a vast cemetery in Cairo).

I loved House of Leaves! Let me know what you think of it even if you hate it.

I'm still struggling through:
The House That Jack Built. I can't say that it is really pulkling me in but it isn't too bad. The woman is getting really annoying, though.

message 11414: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kg05) | 310 comments Im starting House of Leaves as soon as I post this comment. My friend and I were going to read it together, she started Saturday and she's already finished with it and is waiting for me to finish it so we can discuss it. I heard its one of those either love it or hate it books theres like no in-between. I was almost afraid to pick it up at first but with the 40% coupon i figured i might as well. I'll def update what im thinking as i read the book.

Diane (dianedj) Rebbie, I definitely liked the movie Secret Life of Bees much more than I liked the book. Yes, very unusual, but definitely true in this instance.

message 11417: by Lisa (new)

Lisa I was reading "Sons and Other Flammable Objects" but just was not getting into it after 75 pages. It's rare for me to stop reading a book, but there are so many books sitting in my piles, and I hadn't paid for this one, so it is going back to the library unfinished. Today I picked up "Daphne" by Justine Picardie--this one has great potential for anyone who likes the Brontes and/or Daphne du Maurier.

message 11418: by Julie (new)

Julie (scrapsofhistory) I am reading Espresso Shot and The Time Travelers Wife. Both are good, it just depends which one I feel like reading at the time.

message 11419: by Bettie (new)

Bettie Last night I opened the first pages of Trouble with Lichen and promptly fell asleep. This morning, I deduced that the sleep was from tiredness and not Wyndham's writing style, as I am hoping those big dark clouds rolling up over kattegat will mean I have to abandon work plans.

Just finished The Human Stain... eh... It started well, got me involved with the characters and the story and the main character's secret. Then it got bogged down in the middle with too much talk, and he repeated why the main character was suffering at the hands of his college community about 5 times, circling around and around it... okay, get on with it! At which point the author lost me, so I skimmed through the rest of the book to finish. Could have been 100 pages shorter and told the story more effectively. A perfect example of why I prefer non-fiction.

I'm now reading (will start tomorrow, I'm so pissed off by THS!) The Portrait of a Lady, but I fear this one will not appeal to me either.

message 11421: by [deleted user] (new)

Currently reading Chasing Harry Winston, only started it two days ago and 130+ pages in, which is good for me because i'm not a fast reader.

Liking it so far, a nice light read (after reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo i needed it). Its the second Lauren Weisberger book i've read and i've got to say so far i'm happy all round.

Hayes, that stinks that the book grabbed you at first, and then failed to hold you... I dont appreciate when that happens.

Lisa, I hate putting down books I have started as well, but sometimes they just need to be let go of... Good for you! Life is too short to read a book that isnt doing anything for you!

message 11423: by Kristin (new)

Kristin (kg05) | 310 comments Im only 13 pages + however long the intro was, into House of Leaves.. It's very long-going to me right now. I wanna get to the good like one or two word pages, lol! I'm not sure what I think of it so far, i definatly do not hate it but I'm not in love with it yet...

I did get an email saying I won one of the giveaways I entered..
Patience with God: The Story of Zacchaeus Continuing In Us by Tomas Halik
Not sure if it'll be my type of book, but i finally won something!

Doesn't it make you crazy when the author feels the need to keep reminding the reader of things? Do they think the people that read their books are too daft to remember what they've already read?

message 11426: by [deleted user] (last edited May 26, 2009 06:47AM) (new)

I had the impression that Roth had forgotten that he'd written it, and it was another Case of the Mysterious Missing Editor! Like he'd stuck a few chapters together that he'd written at different moments and forgot to take out the overlapping bits.

But all the big newspapers gave him rave reviews for masterful writing... he does write well, I'll give him that, there's just too much of it! ; )

message 11427: by Lisa (new)

Lisa What, there are supposed to be people that edit these books?! I recently read his "Indignation" and sometimes got the same impression which is really saying something for so short a novel. Most of it, however, was wonderfully written.

I am enthralled by "Darling Jim" written by Christian Morek. A unique and well written story. I have about 60 pages left and I can't put it down.
I readcomments a few pages back about audio. I do listen to audio(what better when doing housework, yardwork etc...I do agree that the narrator can make or break a audio book. A few recommendations for good Audio Rococo by Adriana Trigiani, Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore and Freddy and Fredricka by Mark Halpern. Almost forgot, The Gurnsey Potato Peel Literary Society. I thought the narration enhanced

Kate - Thanks for the feedback! I'm going to keep pushing. All of my friends loved this book, but I am not finding it quite as endearing. Glad to know I'm not the only one who struggled through India, though. :)

message 11432: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments Hayes - I have a shelf stuffed with books I think I'll appreciate more - thanks for the encouragement! :) I'd really consider dropping this one to move on to something else, but since my friends all went ga-ga over this book, I'd like to be able to say I gave it a good effort to see what all the fuss was about. I'm happy to hear it gets better in Indonesia!

Mel - Glad to hear you found it to be a worthwhile read. I did enjoy Italy. I'm hoping that once I get to Indonesia, I'll be happy to have kept pushing through - from the general consensus, it seems it will get better!

Candace (candacerenee) I just finished Voyager this past Saturday (its the 3rd book of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series) and moved promptly onto Drums in Autumn Sunday morning. I'm quite grateful for the holiday weekend... time off from work means more time to read!!!

I will probably start the Crying Tree this evening. I forgot to take a book with me when I left the house.

This upcoming weekend, I am goin to start the latest BNFL book - Of Bees and Mist.

message 11436: by El (new)

El Now that I have successfully finished Thomas Wolfe's Look Homeward, Angel, I am treating myself by reading about one of my favorite authors, Flannery A Life of Flannery O'Connor.

I've also started a collection of Russian short stories, because it's rainy today and it fits my mood.

I think it's a book that you have to be in the right mood for. From looking at the reviews it seems to be a love/hate type of book. I was most interested in seeing the connections between the games and the book.

I'm still on The House That Jack Built and I'm really starting to lose respect for it. It seems more than a tad misogynistic to me and that's not exactly something I enjoy reading about.

I read it when it first came out, Keara, and I really liked it. I thought is was very touching and moving. I've only read that and Tuesdays with Morrie by him.

I think you're right. I always suspect that authors write their books these days directly with the idea of making them into films. (Everything is Illuminated is another which gave me this impression.)

I can't find my copy of Portrait of a Lady! I've been tripping over it for 3 years and now that I want to read it I can't find it... grrrr...

EDIT: It's destiny obviously... the book knows I don't really want to read it now, so it went into hiding.

Bettie, you're in luck: I'll start the Pears book instead!!

Emily I finished Olive Kitteridge (found it more readable than Gilead, one of the last Pulitzer fiction winners) and the 3rd audio book in the Dark Tower series by Stephen King (which is phenomenal so far!!).
