message 10851: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne I just read my first Dorothy Sayers book. I wasn't really that impressed. I love British humor (P.G. Wodehouse is a favorite of mine) and this had a few funny lines, but the mystery was kind of lame. I guess I'd rather have a really funny "humor" book or a really good mystery, but not a little bit of each.

However, I might try again. Has anybody else out there read Sayers? Could you give me a recommendation?

Karen and Lori - You both MUST see the film. Brilliant performances - just BRILLIANT!

I myself would start with the first Lord Peter - Whose Body?.

Clouds of Witness (and thanks for the recommendation!)

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments I've started I Capture the Castle and Diana Her True Story in Her Own Words. I'm reading both for the Spring Challenge, as well as ICTC for the Group Read.

Lori, I saw your review of Flashforward and I'm intrigued. I've added it to my TBR.

Bettie 58 pages into The Flight of the Falcon and it is excellent so far

I agree! I just finished Flashforward last night. You should definately pick it up, Cait! I will be starting I Capture the Castle this evening.

message 10859: by Brandon (new)

Brandon (brandontlindsey) At the moment i am reading two books: Redburn by Herman Melville & a really great travel book called In Patagonia by Bruce Chatwin published in 1977.

I think my next novel will have to be what the president just read: Netherland by a guy named Joseph O'Neill. It sounded interesting. Kinda like the American Pastoral of the city.

Moor1206 | 11 comments I recommend "Bend in the Road" by Nicholas Sparks for anyone who likes a sad, romantic novel.

Ronda Wingo (rondasue27) I just finished "The Rescue" by Nicholas Sparks. I enjoyed it. And now I'm planning to start Atonement by Ian McEwan. I saw the movie and am looking forward to the book.

I might be the wrong person to ask... I adore her and love all of them. Which one did you read?

EDIT: just saw your message... clouds of witness wasn't very funny, no. It was the second in the series and sets the family stage, so to speak.

As Suzanne said, the first is Whose Body?, where wimsey's character isn't quite developed yet. My favorite is Murder Must Advertise where wimsey takes a job in an advertising agency and the send up of the industry is very funny.

Harriet Vane shows up in Strong Poison, but if you haven't read the previous ones it may be difficult to understand wimsey's motivations...

There's one stand alone, The Documents in the Case, which is heavy going, but interesting if you're interested in how poisons work.

message 10868: by [deleted user] (last edited May 06, 2009 02:41AM) (new)

Interesting to me, but a little obscure The Lives of the Artists Volume 1. The first part deals with an overview of architecture and techniques. I'm reading now about the different kinds of marble and stone and how they are used and worked.

On a lighter note... Touchstone is really good.

EDIT: Three (3!) Bookrings arrived at the same time... will have to regroup: I need to read One for the Money, Buddha Da, and The Human Stain in rapid succession... help!

Suzanne Hayes wrote: "Suzanne wrote: "I just read my first Dorothy Sayers book...."

Thanks so much Hayes, for the explanation. I was a little disappointed, because I do think Dorothy Sayers is right up my alley, so I will try the book you recommended, Murder Must Advertise. I liked the Wimsey character, I just didn't like the mystery in Clouds of Witness. I felt like the resolution to the case was extremely farfetched and one of those tired plot devices(without going into a spoiler in case someone wants to read it.)

message 10872: by Jamie (last edited May 06, 2009 07:42AM) (new)

Jamie I'm currently reading People of the Book and The Last Olympian. Both are really good so far. I'm also slowly working on The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency (audio) - it's taking me a really long time because I can only listen to it while traveling (as per the rules in the Spring Challenge) and I typically only spend about 15 minutes per day in the car. I'm really enjoying it, though.I think it is SO much better than Alexander McCall Smith's The Sunday Philosophy Club.

message 10889: by Joseph (new)

Joseph (jazzman) I finished Finn by John Clinch last night and just completed a detailed review. Rather than summarize it here, let me respectfully direct any who may be interested to my review under My Books (Cavano).
You probably have heard ,that the book is a kind of "sequel" to Twains Huckleberry Finn, as it fills in the blanks Clinch feels are necessary. Huck's there, of course, and so is his mother.I'm betting you'll be surprised by that.
It's an interesting book about an important time in American history. Still. I have a serious question or two about what Clinch has done. I'd be curious to read what some TNBBC readers think. Best.
