I am reading "Asta" Novel" by Barbara Vine (aka Ruth Rendell) which was lent to me by a friend. It is a detective story. A danish immigrant called Asta starts a diary in 1905 and writes for the next 60 years and unwittingly also records a murder. Not a bad read and an interesting way to present a story as it moves from past to present, and from generation to generation.

I just finished The Lucky One by Nicholas Sparks.....I thought this one was one of his best books. I am starting Firefly Lane by Kristin Hanna in the morning.

I read that... don't remember what happened. I will have to read it again because I remember liking it!

Catherine wrote: "Finally finished Stardust last night and just read the old thread on the novel. I have since read Good Omens and liked that a lot.
JG wrote: "Now I'm starting on Howl's Moving Castle. ..."I "mostly" watched the movie last night. I feel asleep a few times (not the movie's fault - I was exhausted) will "re-watch again".
Just finished Grave Goods by Ariana Franklin and loved it. As usual, there was a lot going on in this book, but all the story threads were tied up at the end. I've now started Dog on It by Spencer Quinn. It's about a P.I. named Bernie, but the tale is narrated by Bernie's dog Chet. It's cute so far.
Chrystal: I LOVED Firefly Lane! It was my favorite by her so far, although I have only read four of her books. I just finished Memoirs of a Geisha (really enjoyed it). I started Angela's Ashes last night and I am about 65 pages in...
Just finished Must Love Black and loved it! I'm trudging my way through Outliers because I just don't enjoy nonfiction. I'm also gearing up to read another YA book - Selkie Girl.
Linda wrote: "Sherrie wrote: "I'm over halfway through The Third Angel A Novel and am list..."Linda, I really liked Blackbird House. I loved the way the stories all intertwined and the thematic elements added a little magic to each story. It was a book I just happened to come across at the library and I am glad I did.
I'm back on Breaking Dawn, after finishing Angela's Ashes yesterday. Woohoo! Progress! This week is a week of long, uneventful hours at work, so I should be able to make a dent!
Put Handmaid on hold for a while, so I'm reading a mystery I got from the library: Amagansett which I felt compelled to read as I spent many of my childhood vacations there at my grandparents' house. It's pretty engaging so far, despite the "sweeping" and "haunting" prose promised on the dust jacket.
In the UK it is called The Whaleboat House: the name change was certainly because the name Amagansett would have no meaning to someone overseas (but I can't imagine anyone from California would recognize it either).

Hayes wrote: "Put Handmaid on hold for a while, so I'm reading a mystery I got from the library: Amagansett which ..."Hayes, I read this several years ago. Long enough ago I had forgotten about it when constructing my "Read" list, but I think I would give it 4 stars. I hope you enjoy it as well.
Was reading Secret in the Shadows but put it aside for Death Perception by Victoria Laurie.I love this series and this one was the best so far.Alot of action grabs right away and doesn't stop till the end.I read most of it yesterday and finished it up this morning. Now back to Secrets in the Shadows so i can finish and start Just After Sunset by Stephen King.
Newbie here. Currently reading Triangle by Katherine Weber. Its a good read if you can get past the first 40 pages.
Started The Almost Moon last night and I can see why it's turned people off. The beginning is pretty gruesome. I'm hoping that once I get a little further in it will be better. I'm reading this for the Spring Challenge so I have to finish it, plus I have a really hard time walking away from ANY book.
I'm a newbie :) I'm finishing up Taltos by Anne Rice (last book in her witches series), starting to read Carrie by Stephen King tomorrow for SK group read for April, and I'm thinking of picking up The Golden Compass by Philip Pullman.
So many books I want to read-just wish I had more time for it!
Just finished reading Obama's The Audacity of Hope Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream. It is well put together and uses a writing style that is easy to read. I enjoyed getting to know our president and his views a bit better.I am now moving on to Shadow of the Wind for this month's group read and the Spring Challenge. Love it when I can hit multiple objectives with one task! I have heard so many people say such good things about this book here that I hope it lives up to the hype. I actually didn't even know I had it. I just happened to be going through my bookshelves and oddly enough found that I had the French version of the book!
Just finished reading Perdido Street Station by China Miéville. This is the first book by this author for me.It is a pretty stunning work; and my feelings are mixed. So I wrote a review. This way I don't clutter this thread too much.
Probably going to read Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia A. McKillip next.
i finished The Spellman Files this evening, and i'm still debating on whether or not i should renew Absolute Friends. i just don't have my heart in it, so we'll see.i picked up the newer one from Jenny White, i can't remember the name, but it's the sequel to The Sultan's Seal. i also have Brideshead Revisited sitting on my shelf, so i probably should read that one at some point also.
I am about to start Fool.
Tomorrow is April 1st... I think tonite I will open the threads for discussion.....

You guys have been so busy reading and writing I can't keep up with you. I haven't writen on the thread for a while, but I have been read both the thread and books. I think there is something wrong with my sense of humor. I always thought I had a pretty good one, but I've tried both Neil Gaiman's Good Omen and Christopher Moore's A Dirty Job which I know are suppose are to be great funny books, but I couldn't get though them. What is wrong with me?
I am currently reading: John Adams by David McCullough(I'm not much on nonfiction, but I must say Mr. McCullough does keep the ball rolling), The Daughter of Fortune by Isabel Allende(A reread, as I am presenting it at my face to face book club next Wednesday), and Evil Genius by Catherine Jink(not far enough into this one to give a judgement yet).
I'm nearly finished with The Wordy Shipmates (Sarah Vowell), and I've recently started Memoirs of a Geisha (Golden). I've had this on my bookshelves for years (if I recall correctly, I bought my copy at a used book store in Cape Cod, in May 2003). I've been hearing it mentioned quite a bit recently in this group, so I decided to give it a whirl.
Mosca wrote: "Probably going to read Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia A. McKillip next. ..."Mosca, I found that book a bit "slow to start" but then got into it and ultimately enjoyed. She has a wonderful poetic style that even during the "slow parts" was enjoyable to read.
I am re-reading All Together Dead, the 7th Sookie Stackhouse book in anticipation for the 8th arriving in paperback sometime this week. How I will last till the 9th book emerges in May I do not know.In the meantime I've recently finished I Am the Messenger by Markus Zusak and was disappointed. I really loved The Book Thief but did not like Messenger very much. I've started The Idea of Perfection which seems good but insufficient to distract me from Sookie for the moment.
Have also ordered Moon Called (the 1st Mercy Thompson book) by Patricia Briggs on the advice of a friend -- seem to be getting sucked in by the "urban fantasy" genre.
I have just finished The Attack - Yasmina Khadra. Will then listen to Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy (Audio)
Celeste, I don't think there's anything wrong with not liking a book. Everyone is different. Lord knows there are times I've not liked a book that is very popular.Lori, I loved "Fool"! Hope you enjoy it as well. I look forward to the discussion.
Fiona, what did you think of "The Attack"? I remember enjoying the first half of the book, but got a bit bogged down in the second half. After all the explanations, I still didn't grasp how someone could do something like that. Good book though. I have his other book "Swallows of Kabul" on my TBR shelf but haven't gotten to it yet.
Just about to finish Anna Karenina - Leo Tolstoy (Audio) after listening for 3 hrs lol. Will read The Brutal Art - Jesse Kellerman (ML).

Ann from S.C. wrote: "I am starting HANDLE WITH CARE by Jodi Picoult. I love her books!"Ann, That one is sitting on my shelf. I'd really like to know what you think.
Finished up The Rest of Her Life. This was just an OK read, rather disappointed with the ending. Today I will start Shadow of the Wind.
I FINALLY finished Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides. It was a bit overwhelming. Long, and boring in some parts but picked up at the end.Now I'm going to read Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss.
I've always had a copy of Wuthering Heights and have never read it. When this semester is over I'm going to give it a shot.
Fiona wrote: "Dorie, I found it a weird read as well. It was suggested that it was like A Thousand Splendid Suns."Yeah, I don't see the comparison. Maybe just because the settings were the same. I thought "A Thousand Splendid Suns" was much better, more readable. But "The Attack" was intriguing in that it was trying to explain the inexplicable. Went at it a bit long though, IMO.
Jenna wrote: "Just finished Shadow of the Wind and LOVED it. What a wonderful book and it was written so beautifully. I read it for a face to face book club so I am excited to discuss it tomorrow night at our ..."Shadow of the wind is idneed a very good book. PS I love you I enjyed a lot. It si a light read but very emotional sometimes, very funny too and a nice beautiful story.

Angela: I am really liking Firefly Lane.....only about 120 pages in but so far so good. I like her books...like you I haven't read many by her, but this one is making me want to read more.Ann from SC: Curious to know how you are enjoying Handle with Care....I have that one on hold at the library....impatiently waiting my turn. I really like Jodi Picoult books though I have only read 3.
Elizabeth (Alaska): I recently read Rest of Her Life....I thought it was okay. Not the greatest but definitely not the worst.
I agree with Jeane about the film version of Stardust. It's one of my favorite movies! We're off to see Coraline tonight since my daughter loved the book.I'm currently reading Beloved by Toni Morrison. I've never read it before or even seen the movie. I know it's one of those that people either really love or absolutely detest, so I'm curious to see how it is.
