MaryZorro wrote: "I'm reading Empire Falls by Richard Russo."MaryZorro, I didn't read the book, but the HBO Series was awesome. Really enjoyed the story.

Further reinforces my wish not to have HBO. Nothing like TV/Movies to ruin a perfectly good read.
Happy to have finished Light a Penny Candle last evening, a thoroughly enjoyable read. Maeve Binchy is not a challenging author, but her characters are people you know and who you always wish well.Today I will start The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America. This is a book which has been recommended at TNBBC and I'm looking forward to it.
I just finished Eat, Pray, Love. Next, I am going to read another of Elizabeth Gilbert's books, The Stern Men. But I am also reading Blue Beyond Blue by Lauren Slater.
Twilight Series books are definitely good. Hopefully the next two movies will be better than the first!
i finished One Fifth Avenue from Candance Bushnell this afternoon. the book wasn't what i was expecing, and i'm glad i read it.not sure what i'll read next, i have 2 library books to choose from. they are total opposites of each other, so i'll have to decide what kind of reading mood i'm in before starting.

I take it you liked Eat, Pray, Love? I plan to read that soon, I've heard primarily positive reviews, but also heard one person say that the author seemed overly self-indulgent.
Jeane,It's good so far but I'm only on page 48 and that may not make me the most qualified critic! (Smile)
I'm looking forward to having a few moments to sit down and dedicate to it.
I like the character development!
I just started The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It looks like it has an interesting storyline even though its more for kids. I hope it doesn't end up being too juvenile. The reason I picked it up is b/c of the GR ratings.
I don't know what to read next. It's a toss up between Memoirs of a Geisha and Wuthering Heights. I'm leaning towards memoirs.
Linda wrote: "Allison, You will just love Enzo. What an awesome book. Careful about reading it in public. It is another laugh out loud book. Happy reading. "Linda, you are so right. I loved it. I loved Enzo. <3 I started the book yesterday and finished it today, I just could not put it down. I really liked your review of the book and it was the reason I picked it up. :)
I'm currently read The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. It's really good so far, I enjoy Roy's writing style.
Morgan, Memoirs of a Geisha is a quick read and really enjoyable. Although I didn't give it 5 stars (I'm a bit stingy when it comes to giving 5 stars), I really enjoyed it. I don't know about Wuthering Heights, but I own a copy and need to read it.Fiona, you can do it!
I'll be eager to hear what everyone thinks of Memoirs of a Geisha--a thread should be started! I will try to do so, but I have an essay due in 17 hours and I leave town for a week Tuesday!
Just starting The Shack. My neighbor gave it to me. I hope I like it, isn't something I would normally pick out for myself, so this should be interesting.

After finishing this book, I will tell you which one is the best.
Reno wrote: "Twilight Series books are definitely good. Hopefully the next two movies will be better than the first!"I'm currently reading Eclipse. Can't wait to see the movie "New Moon", but to be honest, I don't like the Twilight movie. I think Robert Pittison, whatever his name is, does not look that HANDSOME or ANGLE.
just my opinion!
Currently reading The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides. I remember liking the movie quite a bit but I saw it years ago (didn't even know it was a book) so I don't remember it well.
Dar, I kind of have to agree with you. Stephanie, I own The Virgin Suicides but haven't read it. Hope you let us know whether or not you enjoy it!
Patsy,I just bought Eat, Pray, Love yesterday. I'm glad to hear that you liked it.
Randi - everyone please call me Randi
Liz wrote: "Dar, I kind of have to agree with you. Stephanie, I own The Virgin Suicides but haven't read it. Hope you let us know whether or not you enjoy it!"I will! So far, so good. I'm not enjoying it as much as I did Middlesex, but I still really love his writing style.
I just started A Mighty Heart its about Danny Pearl the Wall Street Journal correspondent that was killed in Pakistan just after 9/11

I wasn't expecting to like this at all, and after 20 pages was ready to put the book down and slap the author (not nesc. in that order!) but I carried on. While parts of it were self-indulgent, the whole was really quite nice and I'm glad I read it.
I'm now reading Conan Doyle's The Lost World (Doyle was born in May, if you're looking for something for spring challenge 10 pts. task 4). Very different from his Sherlock Holmes books of course, but fun and engaging. A fluffy thing.

I'm about 2/3 of the way through The Woman in White by Wilke Collins. I love the classics but had never gotten around to this one until now. It is supposed to be a mystery and I REALLY like it despite it's being predictable. For some reason, it's taking me a longer time to plow through this one than usual. Could be the tiny, tiny font that's used in the edition I have.
I'm reading Heaven's Net is Wide by Lian Hearn, and I'm also reading Murder on the Links by Agatha Christie.
I finished Starvation Lake by Bryan Gruley and loved it. Great new mystery by a debut author to watch. I'm now in the middle of Don't Tell A Soul by David Rosenfelt, which has been on my TBR shelf for too long. It's really good so far.

Don't actually have HBO. Just wanted to check out the storyline and didn't have time to read the book since I read 4-5 books.

Aw shucks, *this is me blushing*. Thanks Allison, nice of you to say.
Leshawn wrote: "I finally began "Suite Francaise"."Leshawn: This book was fascinating for me on so many levels. First I am a nut about WWII novels. Second, the fact that this book was actually unearthed so many years after Nemirovsky's death. Hope you enjoy it. Would love to have your take on it after you are finished reading.
I'm reading The Brothers Karamazov (just going into the Grand Inquisitor chapter) and Eat, Pray, Love.

So glad to hear you loved Enzo Allison! It's still my favorite book so far this year. I still look at my lab a little differently now.

Liz, I didn't think of her as overindulgent. I thought it was an interesting book, all she did and the people she met. It is well-written and has humor mixed in!
I guess it shouldn't be a surprise that a book whose title begins with "Eat" should prove to have been written by someone you could characterize as "over-indulgent."
I finished Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor last night. Telling a murder mystery in the voice of Jane Austen was ... unusual. Good mystery element, though.I started A Distinction Of Blood A Mystery of Georgian England, by Hannah March, last night. Interesting beginning, though I have yet to finish the first chapter.
Fiona wrote: "I'm STILL reading IT. I really miss coming in here and saying what new book I'm reading. It's been over a month since I started this door stopper and I still have over 400 pages to go. "
Don't worry, Fiona. It takes me a while to finish a book since I never can seem to find a good block of time to sit down and read. How are you enjoying It? I heard it was one of SK's scarier ones.
I've just finishedThe Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay by Michael Chabon. And I don't know why this book was so difficult for me to read. I'm guessing that the prose rhythms were not easy for me to ride along with. The prose was usually straightforward and frequently beautiful--I find no fault in it. I think it is a question of compatibility with my current mindset. There is no apparent failing with the plot and ending. But, for me, this was not an easy read. The ending is touching; and I do care about the characters. But the book did not engage me. I don't know why.
Haven't decided yet what to read next.
Waffling between and among:
Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen
Anathem by Neal Stephenson
Perdido Street Station by China Miéville
Alphabet of Thorn by Patricia A. McKillip
Very indecisive.

Glad to hear your thoughts on it! Tomorrow morning I'm leaving for a week vacation in Athens (American living in Enalnd for 1 year trying to enjoy European travel), and I plan on starting Beyond Ragnarok tonight (if I get through the million things I need to do) or tomorrow, and I want to pack Eat Pray Love, but I'm sending a lot of stuff back to the states with my parents, so how soon I'll read it may depend on whether or not I can take it with me...otehrwise, I have something to look forward to when I get home :D

i'm currently reading Mockingbird A Portrait of Harper Lee. shields is coming to my local library for a book signing/talk, so i'm looking forward to that.still plugging away through jonathon strange and mr. norrell. i'll finish it eventually.
