What are you reading?
Going to start with a fresh book today, a queen's fool. I hope it is good because then I will other of her books.
Trisha, The Ruins is a great creepy novel. That stuff stayed with me looooong after I finished reading it. Have you seen the movie yet?
I am reading "Nineteen Eighty-Four." I love it. I am almost done and all I want to do is get on my hands and knees and thank God that our government is not really like that. It's pretty scary.
"The Other Mother" by Gwendolen PriceJust finished "Chocolat" by Joanne Harris and really enjoyed it.
I'm going to have to find that, Fiona! I really liked "Chocolat" and was wondering if Harris had written anything else.
Lisa wrote: "I'm going to have to find that, Fiona! I really liked "Chocolat" and was wondering if Harris had written anything else."I read Five Quarters of the Orange by Joanne Harris and enjoyed it. There is a bit of a mystery and it is set in WW2.
I just finished Jhumpa Lahiri's (author of THE NAMESAKE) INTERPRETER OF MALADIES. This is her first book, a collection of short stories, which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. If you're a fan of the short story form (and I am, enjoying both reading and writing them), then this book is for you! It's a wonderful understated collection of tales about people struggling with emotions we all feel.
Destiny wrote: "I recently starting reading Anne Rice's trilogy "Sleeping Beauty" a friend recommended it and said I HAD to read it. But, so far, I am having a hard time getting past all the sexual content. Don'..."haha! i finished the first book but havent gotten the nerve to read the other 2! i own them but felt the same as you. there is no emotion there is no really story its just a bunch or weird sex lol!
i wanted to read something funny so i think im going to start Are You There Vodka? It's Me, Chelseaby Chelsea Handler i got it as a gift for my birthday in september! so i should read it before my brother thinks i dont apprectiate him lol!
just finished New Moon. i didn't like it as much as Twilight, but i did enjoy it. only took me 2 days to read, so that says something!i'll start If You Could See Me Now later this afternoon after running errands. i really enoyed PS I Love You, so i'm hoping that this one is just as good.
Trisha wrote: "Im starting The Ruins by Scott Smith."Trisha, I read The Ruins last year and really enjoyed it. But beware, this one can be a bit gruesome.
Just finished The Bonanza Trail - John Dyson. Now gonna read Poems from The Lord Of The Rings - J.R.R.Tolkien.
Fiona wrote: "It also goes under the name of The Lollipop Shoes - it does in England at least.I only found out yesterday and I was so bummed as I had actually looked at that before my ban... and it's strange c..."
I have that Fi, on my TBR piles. I think I have quite a few of Joanne Harris books.
Kathy wrote: "I am reading "Nineteen Eighty-Four." I love it. I am almost done and all I want to do is get on my hands and knees and thank God that our government is not really like that. It's pretty scary. "I had to read it for school and only remember that there were some pretty serious, scary thoughts in it.
Lisa wrote: ""The Other Mother" by Gwendolen PriceJust finished "Chocolat" by Joanne Harris and really enjoyed it."
did you see chocolat the movie?
Katie, I actually have The Black Jewels Trilogy in one volume, but I really don't like to read a series all in a row. I get tired of the characters, and I don't want that to happen! Thanks for the suggestion though!Heather, I really enjoyed it. I'd recommend it.
I decided to go with a quick read and picked up one of Jasper Fforde's Nursery Crime books, The Fourth Bear
Suzanne, I feel safe saying that most of us love The Book Thief. I hope you do too!Robin, I love A Dirty Job and The Lightning Thief. I think you will too.
I loved reading Chocolat, too. I've had The Lollipop Shoes on my wish list for awhile...is The Girl With No Shadow the title here in the US? It might explain why I'm having trouble finding it. Anyway, I like Harris' style of writing. Robin, good luck with Gravediggers Daughter. It is one of the few books I just gave up on, didn't like it at all.
Now finished Poems from The Lord Of The Rings - J.R.R.Tolkien. Gonna read Black Beauty - Anna Sewell
I just finished The Reader by Bernard Schlink..It was good.. just a bit sporadic.
Moving on to "The Other Hand" tomorrow.
I'm about to finish Graceling, and I HIGHLY recommend it, its a YA fantasy story. When I finish, I'll start An Assembly Such as This
Fiona, who ISN'T that shallow? I've actually never seen the movie or read the book, but both look good!
Just started Rilke's Letters to a Young Poet looking for something quick and anti-McEwan. I love the way McEwan writes, but it seems to drag a little.
I finished Weir's Queen Isabella. I liked Weir's discussion of historical portrayals of Isabella and their lasting influence. In general, however, I tend to prefer more intellectual and cultural context in my biographies and histories. So, I would have liked more discussion of, for example, how the popular overthrow of a king changed (or didn't change) the way the people or parliament viewed the role of the king. But, the book was still interesting and often entertaining as well. Now, I'm returning to Johnson's Invention of Air. So, far it isn't nearly as good as The Ghost Map.
I've just finished the first volume of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norell and decided that I should read another book in between each volume of JS & MN. Just so I don't go crazy. So now I'm reading The True and Outstanding Adventures of the Hunt Sisters A Novel by Elisabeth Robinson also for the Spring challenge. It's pretty good so far and it looks like it'll be a quick read.
JuliAnna - I liked The Ghost Map OK - but still can't figure out what connection the last chapter had to the rest of the book. Suitcase nuclear bombs and Victorian cholera? Say what?
Melissa wrote: "Stephanie wrote: "Just started [b:Love Is a Mix Tape Life and Loss, One Song at a Time|46190|Love Is a Mix Tape Life and Loss, One Song at a Time|Rob Sheffield|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/11..."Melissa - it was really good! When you are able to get a copy, I hope you enjoy it!
Kathy wrote: "I am reading "Nineteen Eighty-Four." I love it. I am almost done and all I want to do is get on my hands and knees and thank God that our government is not really like that. It's pretty scary. "Kathy - I recently read this for the first time and loved it, too. It was pretty horrifying!
JG wrote: "Robin, I love A Dirty Job and The Lightning Thief. I think you will too."So I finished Lightning Thief - and yes I enjoyed it a great deal - My son who is not a reader should love this and I'm going to try and get him to read this.
I'm off to dig into A Dirty Job now ;-)
Just finished Guernsey - I really didn't think I'd like it for some reason, but I absolutely LOVED it. Anyone who has been putting off reading it should do themselves a favor and read it now. :)Starting I Am The Messenger.
Susan wrote: "Robin, good luck with Gravediggers Daughter. It is one of the few books I just gave up on, didn't like it at all. ..."Wow really sorry to hear that. I'm actually loving it. I really like the cadance of the prose and the characters really seem "real" to me - especially the father. I'm listening to it rather than reading - which is unusual to me.
i recently started Wasted A Memoir of Anorexia and Bulimia..i've been wanting to read this for a while because it was recommended to me numerous times as being a really well done memoir.
Finished The Kite Runner. All I can say is "Wow!" It's one of the few books that brought tears to my eyes. I loved it! Now I'm starting Voyager with the rest of the TNNBCers who are on a Diana Gabaldon kick.
Jackie, if you liked The Kite Runner, i highly recommend A Thousand Splendid Suns. similar setting, but very different subject matter, from the Kite Runner, but an equally amazing story.
Thanks Maria! I own A Thousand Splendid Suns, but haven't read it yet. I'm definitely putting it towards the top of my list.
I have been on a reading freeze, too much work to do, but I am getting back into I Capture the Castle and The Hour I First Believed.
Stephanie wrote: "Just finished Guernsey - I really didn't think I'd like it for some reason, but I absolutely LOVED it. Anyone who has been putting off reading it should do themselves a favor and read it now. :)..."
I felt that when when I got Guernsey too.. but also ended up loving it.
Hope you like I am Messenger, I want to read it too.
Fiona wrote: "Karen wrote: "IS Chocolat the same one they made a movie out of yrs ago."Yep, with Johnny Depp and Juliette B. I saw the film first and preferred it to the book... partially because of Johnny Dep..."
Agreed. I couldn't actually finish the book despite several attempts due simply to the fact that I preferred the movie.
I'll probably try again someday, but for now, I'll stick to Johnny!
Susanna wrote: "JuliAnna - I liked The Ghost Map OK - but still can't figure out what connection the last chapter had to the rest of the book. Suitcase nuclear bombs and Victorian cholera? Say what?"Susanna, that made me laugh. I had forgotten about that last chapter. (It has been a while.) I can't argue. I should also confess that I like most books about epidemics (cholera, flu, plague), with the exception of Defoe's Journal of the Plague Years. I like his novels, but I just couldn't get through that book. I have been thinking that maybe I should try again.
Yeah, I really like books about diseases, too. There's a whole group of us over at Plague Books. I remember liking Defoe's Journal of a Plague Year - I'm always amused when it's listed as non-fiction; I guess that's the ultimate compliment to the author, though!
Hey Jamie, I really enjoyed Wasted. Well, as much as you can *enjoy* an eating disorder memoir. Let me know how you like it.

You've gotta keep reading! I had a hard time at first because I spent so much time comparing the movie and the book. But the book is almost as evocative as the movie--I swear I could smell chocolate the entire time I was reading!
