Linda | 887 comments Finished The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes yesterday and loved it for the most part (last 50 pages dragged a bit for me). Started Loving Frank yesterday and A Winter Haunting by Dan Simmons this morning. Both seem to hold great potential.

I started A Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich. Its a shortie and hopefully I finish it today. My husband had to read it in school and said he hated it, but so far... I am enjoying it (well, as much as you can enjoy a book about men in a soviet work camp!)

message 8703: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I am on the last Mommy track book.Bye Bye Black Sheep.I liked the series alot. But i'm ready for some other stuff.Probably go back to some vampire reads.

message 8704: by Janelle (new)

Janelle (whippoorwill) I'm currently reading The Knife of Never Letting Go by Patrick Ness and Shoot the Moon by Billie Letts (for a book club).

The Knife of Never Letting Go is taking me longer than usual to read. For some reason I want to savor it as long as I can.

A little bit yes but in a nice way and an okay way.

Chrystal | 144 comments Just finished Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult....now I'm onto some YA fiction.....the 4th book in the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. Should be a quick read!

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Victoria wrote: "I'm currently reading A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby and A Chalice of Wind by Cate Tiernan."

I read the Nick Hornby book and didn't really like it, besides the middle part. His style is not for me and he writes in a too London, 21 century kind of way for me.

message 8708: by Debby (new)

Debby | 3804 comments I finished Before You Know KNindess by Chris Bohjalian. It was good, but didn't need to be so long. I'm now listening to The Shack by Willliam Young. People who have read it either really liked it or really didn't. I'm about half way through and I have no set opinion so far.

I wouldn't usually read a book like this but my friend spoke very highly of it and it was in the bargain section so I bought it. I just started it yesterday so I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

message 8710: by Peace Love (new)

Peace Love and Reviews (peaceloveandpat) I am currently reading Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist at night and The Ninth Key by Meg Cabot in the morning.

I've 3 line ups:
Accidentally Dead - Dakota Cassidy
Fly Me to the Moon - Alysin Noel
Book Thief - Markus Zusak

message 8711: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm starting "The Graveyard Story" Neil Gaiman. I'm sorry if this is a repeat post, real life has just been crazy lately.

message 8712: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Nice, Paula. I just started Gaiman's American Gods. Let me know how it goes.

message 8713: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments Will do Catherine. The first page captured my interest but just haven't had time to get too much further! The only other Gaiman I've read is "Coraline" and I liked that one.

message 8714: by Sandy (new)

Sandy Bell | 2 comments I just finished "Flaubert's Parrot" by Julian Barnes. I loved it! I just started "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie". I'm playing catch up with the classics!

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments LOL @ Fiona....yeah I would take it that she is loving it...LOL

message 8717: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I really enjoyed Coraline, but I feel like I might have made a mistake with that being my first Gaiman book.

message 8718: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I am still reading THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO. Kind of slow going. I started and finished NECTAR IN A SIEVE by Kamala Markandaya. I really enjoyed it.

message 8719: by Alisha Marie (new)

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I FINALLY finished Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. I thought it was okay, but it didn't keep me turning pages like other mysteries do. I also thought that the ending was a bit anti-climactic. (Sorry, Jeane). Although, I am interested enough to read at least a couple more of the Scarpetta series sometime in the near future.

Right now I'm reading Dead Until Dark, the first of the Sookie Stackhouse books. It's moving at a quick pace, so I like it so far.

message 8720: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments I finished up The Audacity of Hope today and enjoyed it. Barack Obama is a really good writer.

Now I am onto The Book of Lies by Brad Meltzer.

message 8721: by Lynai (new)

Lynai I'm midway through the Book Thief now and I'm loving it.

message 8722: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments I'm finishing up While my Sister Sleeps by Barbara Delinsky. I went to her book signing last night and picked up a copy.
Have also been reading Tuf Voyaging by George R. R. Martin, which is either really funny or really annoying--I can't make up my mind.

message 8723: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I picked up CAT'S EYE by Margaret Atwood from my tbr pile. I am starting it tonight.

message 8724: by Donna Jo (new)

Donna Jo Atwood | 207 comments Alllison said I really want to read a Georgette Heyer novel, I have been seeing a lot about her lately...our library doesn't have ANYTHING by her, though.

Has anybody read anything by her?

I've read almost all of her books. Depending on what you like they split into three groups. 1) her light regency romances; 2) other historicals; and 3) modern (1920/30s) mysteries. I found the mysteries the least satisfying, but they weren't bad. The others are my favorites, though, and I find myself rereading them -- almost like comfort food.

message 8726: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments just finished Celebutantes from Amanda Goldbert and Ruthanna Khalighi Hopper.

not bad, fluff reading, and it had more name and product dropping than any other book (including Lauren Weisberg books) but an easy and enjoyable one.

i'm starting Girls in Trucks tomorrow. i promised to write a review on it for the library in the town i grew up in so hopefully i enjoy the book!

message 8727: by Andrew (new)

Andrew (sir_reads_a_lot) | 509 comments I just finished The Girl With A Pearl Earring by Tracey Chevalier. Very good I liked it.

Started 100 years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Wohoo...not.

message 8728: by Allison (new)

Allison (inconceivably) I just finished Lady Audley's Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon...it was okay, I didn't enjoy it that much.

After making myself read the whole thing-I decided to go with One for the Money by Janet Evanovich for a nice quick read.

message 8731: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Sorry, Paula - just meant that Coraline is very kid-friendly and American Gods is pretty mature so far. Cute book, but not representative of Gaiman's overall work.

Great book - I recently read it because of this group's insistence in making my TBR longer than Santa's list.

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments Catherine wrote: "Sorry, Paula - just meant that Coraline is very kid-friendly and American Gods is pretty mature so far. Cute book, but not representative of Gaiman's overall work."

I'm not expert - only read Good Omens (liked) and Stardust (was "alright") but from what I've heard about Gaiman is he is very varied.

message 8735: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments Robin, good point about Gaiman being varied. This is only my second try, but that certainly seems true.

Coraline was an extremely quick read that wasn't disturbing as an adult, but I could see being creepy (although not really scary) as a child. It wasn't necessarily GREAT writing, but I thought it was well-written, which I can't say about a lot of YA that I've seen.

American Gods seems great so far, but I'm only about 70 pages in. I love mythology though so I think I'll enjoy it.

message 8736: by Robin (new)

Robin (robinsullivan) | 997 comments I just read in one sitting "The Small woman" - This is a real-life story of Gladys Aylward who becomes a missionary in China starting in the 1930's. This is a FANTASTIC story of a truly remarkable woman. I also highly recommmend the movie "The Inn of the Sixth Happiness" staring Ingrid Bergman which also did a wonderful job recounting this woman's remarkable life and how when war comes she leads 100 orphans to safety in a march over the mountains terraine where she lived.

Nikki (tikki_nik2) | 28 comments I have just finished Middlesex, Jeffrey Eugenides and started The Gathering, Anne Enright. I loved Middlesex, it is a book I would never have picked up if I hadn't found goodreads but now I would certainly recommend reading it! The Gathering is not gripping me much yet - but it would probably be the same whatever I followed Middlesex up with.

message 8738: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments I needed something easy to read so I'm reading Hogfather by Terry Pratchett.

For those speaking of Hornby's "A Long Way Down", I would recommend the audio to anyone interesting in the story. It has three different voice talents, and is like an audio play. Absolutely wonderful! I didn't love the story, but I really enjoyed listening to their voice performances.

Nikki, I agree with you on Middlesex. Read it for a book club and was glad they selected it. I really liked the historical aspects of the development of the areas around Detroit.

Lisa Just finished "The Mighty Queens of Freeville" and I recommend it to every woman. Quick read, very funny and poignant.

Picked up last night "Matrimony."

message 8743: by Sandy (new)

Sandy (ladybatez) | 30 comments Just finished The Kite Runner. I was pleasantly surprised. At one point early in the book I got very angry, and threw the book down. I almost didn't want to pick it back up but I did. What a great read! Now starting The Little Giant of Aberdeen County.
