I am reading Atlas Shrugged... I must say that in the beginning it seem very involved and complex but after the first 75 pages it took off and I can't put it down!
Heather this is the first book I have read of his... I was wondering if anyone else has read anything by Dennis Lehane or an recommendations? Mystic River is amazing!! I hope to finish it tonight.
I just finished A Good Woman by Danielle Steel. I thought this was one of her better books. Getting ready to start Change of Heart by Jodi Picoult.
Angela - I don't think you can go wrong with any of Dennis Lehane's books. I've never read a bad one. Shutter Island has been highly recommended by a very well-read friend of mine as the best novel she ever read. I'm def. going to read it this year.I also like his novels with a man & woman detective, the woman's name is Angela Gennaro. I think I've read the first couple of that series. I believe A Drink Before the War is the first. They are very good also.
If you do read any more of his, I'd love to get your thoughts.
just finished Captial Crimes from Jonathan and Faye Kellerman.will start The Girls from Lori Lansens sometime tonight or tomorrow.
I've just finished Somewhere in Africa - a fictionalised biography of a girl and her family who escaped the Holocaust to live in Kenya. I've just started Plato and a Platpus Walk into a Bar which is the history of philosophy told through jokes. I also have a memoir, The Storyteller's Daughter by Saira Shah, about Afghanistan which I might read.

I thought it was ok. It was really beautifully written but in the same vein, it really dragged at times.

I borrowed it from my roommate who had also found it at Target. It was a pleasant surprise for both of us that she stumbled upon it.
Allison wrote: "Well...I added The Loop to my TBR list...BUT I checked, and the library has it...I have $10 I have to pay before I can check anything out though, haha. I forgot to take my books back before I left ..."Allison, really try to read a book by Nicholas Evans. All the people I convinced to read them, now love them. I even managed to convince a lady on the bus to work to read The loop and she will read it this weekend. Better start with The loop or The horse whisperer I think.

Cynthia wrote: "I am reading Atlas Shrugged... Ayn Rand can get pretty "soap boxy" and her relationship with men is...well unusual to say the least. But her story and characters are fantastic and I loved this book.

I just finished The Princess Bride - The movie is one of my favorites and I never read the book for the first time - it was a great read. Very true to the movie but the little interjections really got me. Overall it is Brilliant
Thanks Laura. I do plan on reading more of his books because Mystic River was so amazing! The movie was great but the book was so much better :) Currently reading Breakneck by Erica Spindler (one of my favorite authors!) This is her newest release. Only about 30 pages in, but intrigued.
I just have to put in another plug for Whiskey Sour because it's a very busy time for me, and I'm gonna have this book read in 3 days. 270 pages hardback. If you're looking for a hard-boiled police procedural, with a plucky female detective with a great, sarcastic sense of humor, pick this one up. It's the first of the series.
You're welcome Angela! I have a feeling that if every book was a Dennis Lehane, we would all be reading them in three days - or less, for alot of you.
For a decade or more friends have encouraged me to read Neal Stephenson; and I am finally reading The Diamond Age Or, a Young Lady's Illustrated Primer--about 2/3 through. My only question is why have I waited for so long. The book is a joy so far.
I am also readin The Anatomy of Deception - Lawerence Goldstone & The Witch's Trinity - Erika Mailman. Both are mobile library books from a booksite I belong to. Which is why I have to read them both asap.

Mosca wrote: "For a decade or more friends have encouraged me to read Neal Stephenson; and I am finally reading The Diamond Age ... i His books are all pretty different. I loved book:Snow Crash (although he hadn't learned how to write a conclusion yet), and I generally recommend it as a first Stephenson read. The Quicksilver trilogy is also really good. His first book, which I haven't read, is generally considered not worth reading. And, his latest while definitely interesting, would have benefited from some serious cutting. The first 100 pages are particularly slow.
I just started reading "Astrid & Veronika" by Linda Olsson. She is going to be at our local independent bookstore next month so I'm excited to read her book.
Susan, I hope that you enjoy Sarah's Key as much as I did. I loved it. Although, I do have to admit that I was crying through half the book.I've just finished Keeping the Moon by Sarah Dessen and I thought it was a cute easy read. I forgot how much I liked her books seeing as I haven't read one in about three years.
Now, I'm reading Postmortem by Patricia Cornwell. I decided to get started on the series since I own like six of the Scarpetta books already.
Susan wrote: "I am currently reading "Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay"Susan, i've seen this book at target and i almost bought it. You'll have to let us know how it is.
JuliAnna: "His books are all pretty different."JuliAnna, do you mean that his books (Neal Stephenson) are different from other authors; or, do you mean that his books are different from one another?
Alisha! I just finished "Lock and Key" by Sarah Dressen and really enjoyed it! Have you read it? I will check out "Keeping the Moon"; was looking forward to reading more by this author.
I haven't read "Lock and Key" yet, but I'm planning on buying it soon. Besides "Keeping the Moon", I've read "Just Listen", "Dreamland", and "This Lullaby". I can't recall if I actually read "The Truth About Forever" even though the plot seems familiar, so I may have read it, can't really remember. "Keeping the Moon" is actually one of her less angsty books (which is why I loved it). "Just Listen" and "Dreamland" were a bit more dramatic, but great nonetheless (especially Just Listen). I do hope that you enjoy the rest of her books as much as I did.
Just started this morning "The Mighty Queens of Freeville" by Amy Dickinson who writes the column "Ask Amy."
Searching for Schindler by Thomas Kenneally - about how he got started writing "Schindler's List" (which I believe was actually titled "Schindler's Ark"?) and the research behind it.
Just finished People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. I'm currently reading It's Only Me: the ted williams we hardly knew by John Underwood and I'm re-reading Les Miserables, one of my all-time faves.
I recently finished The Stubborn Season by lauren b. davis. It was a compelling historical literary fiction read - enjoyed it, loved the female main character, and learned a lot about what went on during the 1930's in the US & Canada.

I haven't had a chance to look at any of the others simply because my TBR list keeps growing ahead of my ability to get the reading done.

Between The Secret Life of Cee Cee Wilkes and Three Weeks to Say Goodbye by C.J. Box, this has been a banner week for great reads.
Susan wrote: "I am currently reading "Sarah's Key by Tatiana De Rosnay"Susan, How do you like it? I found it a great read and lent it to a friend who also loved it and she and I are usually differ greatly on books.

I got Maida's Little Camp for Valentine's!This is going to be a very odd experience. I last read a "new" Maida book in about 1974!
I am reading Yes Man by Danny Wallace. It is laugh out loud hilarious. The only copy I could find though has the stupid movie cover. i just try to ignore it.
I'm just finishing up The Story of a Marriage A Novel by Andrew Sean Greer. Tomorrow I leave on holiday for a week, and I find that deciding what books to take with me is proving more difficult than what clothes to bring...
There is nothing I like more than browsing through a bookstore at an airport - a combination of excitement because I'm going somewhere and the thrill of having LOTS of time to read.

Linda,
So far I really like "Sarah's Key", it's very intense. I like reading the chapters about Sarah better, hate when the chapter ends and it goes back to Julia. It's going to be a book you look back on for a long time.
I finished I AM LEGEND and I liked the fact it was nothing like the movie. Now I am starting THE PESTHOUSE by Jim Crace.
I am reading the Bone Garden. Started off a little skeptical, however its so hard to put down. Great amount of suspense for me and realy enjoying the story-line!!

Alisha, how is Cornwell going? Whish I would be reading any of her books now.
Linda - I gave People of the Book three stars. I enjoyed it, but didn't love it. It is interesting and intelligent. When I finished I was in awe of the scope of what Brooks had accomplished. But, as I read there were many times when something didn't ring true or just bugged me about where the story was going or how it was written. So overall I think the idea of the story is much better than the actual writing of it turned out to be.
I'm reading World without End by Ken Follett. I started to re-read Pillars of the Earth, but then someone told me not to because they said World without End is so much like it that you get kind of tired of it all if you read one right after another. I'm only about 50 pages into it, but I'm glad I took that advice. It's good, but very long and I'll be ready to be done with it at the end.
I remember reading about this then forgot about it. Thanks for the post. I'll get it.
