My younger sister is eight. I can't imagine her reading Twilight at ten. In fact, I doubt I'll let her.

I don't think I would have been ready to read Twilight at 10...but things have changed a lot since then.Still...I'm thinking she should wait. ESPECIALLY when you consider Eclipse and Breaking Dawn.
Try things like Stardust, Coraline, Harry Potter, even. The Twilight series is really meant for an older young adult audience.
Melody - My parents never monitored what I was reading when I was coming up, and I got into trouble because I liked to read "grown-up" books - books written for adults. But I gotta tell ya, the books they classify as YA now could easily be adult books in many cases. So you have to be very watchful as a parent, in my opinion.I say this because when my dau. was in 5th grade, a girl (another 5th grader) at her summer camp gave her one of the Gossip Girls books to read and if I hadn't been watching what she was reading, she would have had an oral sex lesson in elementary school.
I would def. not recommend the Twilight series to elementary school students, and in my opinion it wouldn't be appropriate until high school.
My two cents. Hope it helps you. It's tough being a parent these days.

" What did you think of Uglies? I bought the trilogy through Scholastic for my class and read the first one...but I really didn't enjoy it. Do you plan on reading the others?
Linds, I thought it was kinda boring!! I really wanted to like it more. I heard that the 2nd and 3rd books are better.
Melody - I honestly wouldn't recommend the Twilight series for a 10-year old. (I actually wouldn't recommend them to ANYONE. I think they're awful) Especially, Breaking Dawn, which has scenes of intense violence. I still believe those are HS level books, and even at that age I would sit my daughter down and talk with her about the fact that the way Edward acts is not ever acceptable outside of the realm of books. I think girls are being so misled by this Twilight series. It must be hard though to be a parent and deny your very young daughter this book that all her friends are reading but truly isn't appropriate for their age group.
If she hasn't read Harry Potter, get her going on that! SO much better than the Twilight series in every way, shape, and form.
Moving on, thanks for all the input guys! I think I'm going to let my mom try The Time Traveler's Wife. If she hates it I'll immediately use one of the other suggestions haha.
I finished World War Z. It was pretty good. I really liked the idea, but not the format the author used to write the story. I also finished Predictably Irrational. It was about human behavior which is not always as rational as you would expect. Very interesting.I am now reading Martin Chuzzlewit by Dickens. So far, it is my favorite Dickens novel.
Lisa - Martin Chuzzlewit? Is that by Charles Dickens? Color me confused...I've never heard of that one. What's it about? The title alone intrigues me :)
The only reason I have heard of Martin Chuzzlewit is because it is featured in Jasper Fforde's The Eyre Affair.
Just finished Sleepover Girls Go Green - Angie Bates. Will carry on reading Skin Privilege - Karin Slaughter.
Thanks Selena, Allison, Laura & Katie for your thoughts. I am going to stick to my guns and allow her to read the books when she is older, if she still wants to. I feel happier hearing that you all agree with me. We have sat down and had a chat and found some great Jacqueline Wilson and Cathy Cassidy books that she has not yet read and she is excited about reading them now.
Yes, Martin Chuzzlewit is by Charles Dickens. I also heard about it from Jasper Fforde's book.I think this one is so good because it is funny. Dickens uses sharp sarcasm in many of the description. So far, I have read about 300 pages of 850. Hopefully it will not lose steam at the end.
Fiona: It's something to do with money and inheritance I can't rememberLOL Fiona, isn't that almost every Dickens novel? He was so obsessed with that topic.
Let me know if it keeps holding your interest, Lisa. I love Dickens, and I'm thinking of adding this to the ever-growing TBR pile.
Melody - I cannot imagine giving Twilight to a ten-year-old. Frankly, I can't imagine enjoying it at that age - it's not at all like the books I recall enjoying at that age, certainly.I was reading "adult fiction" at that age, but it was Ivanhoe and J.R.R. Tolkien, I think.
I would have loved Harry Potter or His Dark Materials, though.

Kim--I would stick with it. I read it and had to skim over some of the detail, but was really glad I read to the end.
Allison,
The Eyes of the Dragon is by far my favorite Stephen King. Such a departure from his regular horror stuff... and still contains enough of the King magic....

Allison wrote: "Melody, I'm glad she didn't get super upset with you!"Melody - I second this one. And Katie, I totally agree w/you on this as well!
I'm reading Old School, which is really good, except for one thing. It's mentioning all of these books and authors and I really want to read them all right.now. I'm also trying to read War and Peace for a book group. I'm not sure how that's going to work out for me. And I'm fighting the urge to read 3 or 4 other books right now on top of school work and what I've already started.
I'm about half-way through The Devil in the White City. It is starting to pick up a bit but there is so much detail, and I tend not to enjoy a lot of details about mundane things.
I'm going to get through it though because this serial killer has me so angry I can't wait to find out how he finally gets caught.
I just finished Living Dead in Dallas, the second book in Charlaine Harris's southern vampires series and I loved it. I liked the first book fairly well (Dead Until Dark) but like the second much better and then went online and ordered the next several in the series.I am also in the midst of The Rape of Europa, which deals with what happened to major art and cultural works during WWII, which is also pretty great but a lot slower.
I have I am the Messenger waiting on my bookshelf.
Melody I don't think your dd would be interested at 10 if she were to start them anyway.I know my 11 yr old tried it and couldn't read past the first couple of pages. She just wasn't thrilled with it yet.It really is for older children. My 16 yr old loves them though.I don't get to upset about what they choose to read because neither one read all that much so when they do it thrills me.Plus they have never really picked up anything that they weren't ready for other than Twilight. She was only interested because other friends were obsessed and she wanted to see what the fuss was about.

So you won't regret ordering the next few! After #3, I was hooked.
Also...I'm about to start I Am the Messenger too. Hope we like it! If Laura has anything to say about it, I don't think I have a choice! haha

I am also in the middle of the Stephanie Plum series and feel like amazon is very happy every time I log on.
I really liked The Book Thief, so I have high hopes for I Am the Messenger.

It was okay, but usually sequels are worse not better. Now, I will definitely continue on the series.
Same with me-I loved The Book Thief, so I'm excited for another by that author.Yeah, I actually just got the first 3 Stephanie Plum books from Bookmooch...I figured it was about time I gave them a try.
JuliAnna-I don't think you'll regret giving the rest of the Sookie series a shot-I think it gets better and better every book.
I don't know if I would have kept going with Sookie after #1, but someone gave me the box set of the first 7 for Christmas, so I felt like I didn't have a choice! haha. I think its because I don't really like Bill. Once more characters are introduced, it gets better. :-)
I just started Lisey’s Story – Stephen King. I love what I’ve seen already and I’m only about 150 pages in.
Yes, Eric DOES play a role..he is my favorite, and one of the big reasons I like the series...and THE reason Book 3 is one of my favorites :-) hehe.
Hey ladies, we have a Sookie thread here if you are interested in keeping the love/hate talk going!
I just finished book 6 (my least favorite so far) and am starting book 7.

I'm reading Mistress of the Art of Death right now, and I'm curious...For everyone else that has read this, did you like it enough to read The Serpent's Tale? If so, was it better or not as good?
Paula wrote: "I'm just getting into "Pope Joan". I'm enjoying it so far."cool, keep us updated! That is in my TBR pile.
Melody, I agree with you about the Twilight series. I read those and thought why are you letting young girls feel that its okay to be controlled. Very Thankful that my daughter is only 5. Anyway I am reading The Kite Runner.

The Stephanie Plum books are very fun. Enjoy!
A Question of BloodMy first rebus book (Ian Rankin) but jsut great. I loved the series on tv and the books are just as great. What was funny today is that I got training and a Scottish guy gave it and I jsut kept seeing Rebus in my head because of the accent.
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell
haven't been able to read on for some days but I am very curious how it goes on and still enjoying it.
Outlander
Almost around page 100 and even though I like it, I feel confused. I wonder when and how she is going to go back to normal.

Sorry you didn't enjoy it more ;-( For me it was a pretty good book - for non-fiction which I don't read much of.

This is a very ambitious 3-week reading project! I'll be greatly impressed if you get through it all.
I'm currently on a sci-fi fantasy kick I just finished last night reading Moon Called by Patricia Briggs and now I'm reading Blood Bound by her as well.. I've found a new author I really like! Yay!

Ok Allison, I will. I'm hoping to make some progress in it this afternoon, we'll see.

Sorry to report but I haven't been that into it. I think it's my mood more than anything else, though it may be that I'm simply not one for satires or the fact that I haven't been able to get into anything lately (reader's block or something). It could also be that I am just not smart enough to *get* all of it. LOL. I do plan to finish it eventually. I’m about 2/3’s through now.
i finished The Whiskey Rebels from David Liss last night. very good story, and a well done way of telling it.i started Capital Crimes from Jonathan and Faye Kellerman today. not far into it, maybe 10 pages, so we'll see how it moves tonight.
