I'm reading The GargoyleMan is it intense. I was forewarned and so ....you just gotta hang on for the ride....it's worth it.
I'm just starting "Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson. A friend gave it to me for Christmas-we usually like very different kinds of books, but I'm going to give it a go. The back cover says it's set in early 20th century Chicago, and revolves around an architect associated with the world's fair and a serial killer. I'm only on the first page, but i'll let you all know what i think.
Jenna, I finished it just before dinner. That has to be the quickest start to finish time for me ever! I liked the conversation tone to it, the character was talking right to you..... but I was a little disappointed in the ending.
How about you?
How about you?
I just finished The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher Murder and the Undoing of a Great Victorian Detective by Kate Summerscale. I thought it was okay. The mystery was interesting (although, terrible and heartbreaking), but the book did get bogged down in a couple of parts. I had trouble picking it back up through the first 150 pages, but it got better after that. Still, I almost gave up on it twice. It definitely didn't read like a fiction like the blurb in the book suggested it did.Right now I'm reading The Harrowing Alexandra Sokoloff. It seems like a fast read (according to the blurb, at least. Yep, I never learn. I have too much faith in advertisement when it comes to books) and I need something fast after reading "The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher". I'm also unofficially doing the Year of Reading Dangerously challenge and since I don't really read horror, I thought that "The Harrowing" would be a good place to start. Hope I'm not mistaken.
I just finished The Book Thief. It was brilliant. I loved it. Definitely some of the most exquisitely crafted YA work I've ever had the pleasure to read.

I am burnt out with memoirs so I'm switching themes. I have just started the Alchemist. So far it is interesting.
Jill wrote: "I just finished The Book Thief. It was brilliant. I loved it. Definitely some of the most exquisitely crafted YA work I've ever had the pleasure to read. "I loved it too Jill. I felt like my heart would melt it was so good.

I'm reading Outlander right now, I'm really enjoying it. I would like to read The Book Theif but I am hesitant, what do you think of it if you've read it?
I also want to read Revolutionary Road before I see the movie. Does anyone have any thoughts on this book too?
I am reading two books right now, both of which I wouldn't have picked up if it hadn't been for the winter challenge. One is Teacher Man A Memoir by Frank McCourt, which I am not enjoying, even though I loved Angela's Ashes and I am a teacher! I almost feel like his methods and viewpoint are so out-of-sync with what is needed in today's classroom that I can't stand it. But he does have a way with words, that man.The other book I am reading is December by Elizabeth Hartley Winthrop. Another eh. Kind of slow, and the weaving in and out of first to third person narrative makes me more than a little dizzy. Oh well.
Just finished reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K. Rowling. Will now read I am the Messenger - Markus Zusak.

I rarely re-read a book, but this is one I will more than likely revisit. Hope you enjoy it.
I am about to start Girl with a Pearl Earring and am waiting for the mail to deliver Olive Kitteridge A Novel in Storiesfor the B&N book club read.
I'm reading The Best Ten Days of My Life right now and have The Heretic's Daughter next in line. The Book Thief was great and was one of my more popular giveaways.
I really enjoyed I Am the Messenger! It is very different than The Book Thief, but it is still great. I know that some people were put off by the ending, and that ruined the book for them, but I liked it. Jamie, if you liked Zusak's style in The Book Thief, I think that you would like Messenger as well. I think it's one of those books that you either love or hate. I loved it.
(Edit: I probably shouldn't say "style" because the style is different between the two books. If you liked his VOICE in The Book Thief, you should like Messenger.) :)
Linda wrote: "I am about to start Girl with a Pearl Earring and am waiting for th..." was sooo hard to put down. I loved it.Girl with a Pearl Earring
I finished Girl with a Pearl Earring last night. Interesting novel.Robin - Julie and Julia was just "OK" and the sustained tone was rather whiny. I wouldn't bother picking it up again.
Fiona wrote: "Just finished reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K. Rowling. Will now read I am the Messenger - Markus Zusak."I am reading I am the Messenger and it is terrific. I hope the ending is not what made you hate it Carrie. Cause I am loving it ! Prob not even 1/2way thru yet.
Fiona wrote: "Just finished reading The Tales of Beedle the Bard - J.K. Rowling.Did you like Beedle the Bard? I just bought it and haven't seen much about it
on goodreads...probably looking in the wrong places! But I'd rather stick to my own groups. If you see this I'd love to hear your "Bard Thoughts"
OUTLANDER GROUP - I am posting a new thread in Wanna Discuss This Novel? section so we can decide when we're gonna start reading it. YIPPEE!

Great Laura!! Now I just need the book.
I'll wait for you Jeane, and I think Heather is planning to also - but see more details in the Outlander thread(Somewhere, Lori is heaving a big sigh of relief that I finally got around to setting up the thread!)
I can't WAIT to start it. But building up anticipation is a good thing too!
I just finished The Harrowing and I liked it. It was creepy and entertaining. Although, I did like the build up to the ending more than the ending itself. But after struggling through my last two reads, I'm glad that I read something that kept me captivated enough to not stop reading.Right now, I'm reading The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. I've never read any of The Chronicles of Narnia before so I'm excited to start.
Alisha wrote: "I just finished The Harrowing and I liked it. It was creepy and entertaining. Althoug..."Didn't you say you never read horror? Aren't you glad you read it, so now you have even more choices!
I am reading Dreams From My Father by Barack Obama. I was going to start with The Audacity of Hope, but I saw that it was one of next month's books, so I'm gonna hold off for a bit. :)
Well, Kandice, I've never read out-and-out horror. I've read a couple of horror books that could be construed as psychological (Come Closer, Promise Not to Tell A Novel) and I've read The Amityville Horror and that's classified as "non-fiction." I just haven't read actual ghosts/demons type of horror. But after "The Harrowing" I'm actually excited to be picking up more.

I'll highly recommend Book Thief!!

Jamie wrote: "Robin..I really did enjoy The Secret Life of Bees..it was good. how'd you score a free copy??"So once a month a go to the Arlington VA public library to do a lecure on "business and writing" - They have a bunch of shelves in the 'parking garage' filled with free books. Everytime I go there I go through the shelves - last time I scored Pillars of the Earth. This month I got Secret Life of Bees AND 6 Patterson books and Brad Meltzer Book of Lies -- Woot!
