Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Oh! Yes, I've read that. *smacks side of head* We read that in a Victorian history class, actually.

I liked it.

JuliAnna | 85 comments Mary Barton sounds interesting. I'll have to check it out. I've never read any Elizabeth Gaskell.

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Just finished The Tea House on Mulberry Street. I absolutely loved this! What a quaint little book this was.
Started The Piano Teacher A Novel
Not sure if this is going to be something I'm going to enjoy. I can tell this is more of a focus on words then the story itself...
Any comments from the peanut gallery?

The Thirteenth Tale is GREAT!!! Just keep at it, you won't regret it...there are so many twists and turns. :)

message 7755: by Kandice (new)

Kandice Elizabeth, I am actually listening to the Thirteenth Tale and loving it. I don't know what that post was!

Lori, I will definitely check the thread on the Road. I always forget to check the old ones, but really love reading everyone's thoughts.

I found the thread about The Thirteenth Tale some where in here...glad you are liking it...I loved it.

The Road is good....depressing, but gripping...you can't put it down.

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments I've just finished Rebecca. Very good book. I really enjoyed it. It's beautifully written. You really felt the anxiety and insecurity of the main character.

Now I'm probably going to start on Steven Pinker's The Blank Slate.

Elizabeth of Silver's Reviews (silversreviews) Linda wrote: "Becky wrote: "I can't decide what to read next... I'm trying to decide if I want to read "Runaway Jury" by Grisham (my 25 point task for the Winter Challenge) or "Heart-Shaped Box" by Joe Hill (a 1..."

Runaway Jury is good.

Haven't read Heart-shaped Box.

That sounds good. A little icky too (dead baby, privy)! Happy reading.
I am going to finish the Road before I go to sleep tonight. (preferrably in bed!)

Jill (wanderingrogue) | 329 comments Fiona wrote: "Finish The Road already? I thought you'd just started it?"

It's a very quick read. You fly through it and the sections are in tiny, digestible, tragic pieces.

message 7761: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I started yesterday. It is sooo good. I read through my lunch break and as long as I could this morning after dropping of the kiddies but before my commute. I want to read it right now, but while switching between screens at my desk is acceptable, actually READING A BOOK is not! Alas! If my boss were a lover of books, maybe.

I LOVED Shadow of the Wind...my all time favorite this year.

message 7763: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Just finished Kite Runner and I loved it... I think I enjoyed it more than A Thousand Splendid Sons.

I started reading Little Women for the Winter Challenge, but because I just recently watched the movie, also for the Winter Challenge (black and white one) I feel like deja vu and I might have to give this a break until I 'forget' some of the movie because it seems to be quite similar so far.

JG (Introverted Reader) Jackie, thank you so much for the link to Oprah's discussion of Anna Karenina! I'll be printing the character bookmark as soon as I can stir up the energy to get up and turn on the printer!

I enjoyed Kite Runner too Angela though I haven't read A Thousand Splendid Suns yet. Did you know Kite Runner was made into a movie?

message 7766: by LovetoRead (new)

LovetoRead (lovestoread08) | 6 comments I am now onto the 4th book in the Sookie Stackhouse series. I have the Kite Runner to read, and am anxious to get to that! So many books, so little time! :)

Chrystal | 144 comments Just finished The Rest of Her Life by Laura Moriarty. I thought it was a good book. If you like Jodi Picoult, you should give this one a try.

Going to start Eclipse (3rd Twilight book) later today.

This is the third book in a row I've read where the POV switches every chapter. I AM GETTING SICK OF THAT. WHat ever happened to the main character being the narrator?!?!

message 7769: by Lisa Julianna (new)

Lisa Julianna (lisajulianna) | 1053 comments I'm starting the third book of the Twilight series today...Eclipse.

Dorie (dorieann) | 430 comments Carrie, I sympathize with you. That gets old really fast, and unfortunately it seems lately a lot of writers are using that device.

I finished "Plum Spooky" and enjoyed it as much as I do all Evanovich's books. It made me want a monkey and donuts. I'm now starting The Servants by Michael Marshall Smith. It's about a boy named Mark and his ill mother who move into his new stepfather's house. Mark resents this new stepfather and one day discovers a way into a secret world.

Thank you, Dorie. I am glad you understand. I don't mind it at all until I am getting confused about who is who because 5 different characters all want to put in their two cents.

message 7782: by Kandice (new)

Kandice When I'm just not interested, I find other things to do every other page. Something will pop in my head and I'm like "Oh! I should do this NOW." Anything to keep from reading. I hate that feeling, and have decided, from now on, to give up. Like everyone keep saying, there are sooooo many lovely books to read. Why miss some because we waste slogging through a rubbish book? (for us, I know not everyone likes the same books!)

Kandice Poor Moby Dick!!!!! I wish everyone who hates Moby Dick would read Billy Budd to redeem Melville:)

message 7789: by Catherine (new)

Catherine | 175 comments I love Moby-Dick and thought Billy Budd was okay (fine, pretty good), but Moby-Dick wins my heart. Poor Melville!

message 7790: by Tango (new)

Tango Just finished 'Everyone Worth Knowing' by Lauren Weisenberg (sp) - a very light read and a bit formulaic after 'The Devil Wears Prada' but still enjoyable escapism.

message 7791: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Jeane - Yes, Anne Hathaway plays Ella in Ella Enchanted. I thought it was good when I saw it years ago, but it seems like the consensus is that the movie isn't nearly as good as the book - no surprise there!

Kandice Oh dear. I still have a little left of the Road, and have been assuming all along they would be finding a commune or something. I can see from your post they will not! It has been so mind blowingly horrible, I guess I just assumed it couldn't end that way.
