So I'm going to have to learn more about "Jodi Piccoult" that Fiona mentioned - in general I trust this group and their opinions but I was just reading my email and a post in another group under "Books I Loathe said...."I picked up My Sister's Keeper and would not read another book by her for a long time."
I'm definitely going to have to learn more...
Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)
Heather: We are exactly in sync with New Moon - I really thought it was slow and it doesn't even seem to do anything worthwhile until 417. That's a long time to wait. I'm trying to decide what I'll do about the last two - some have said that Eclipse "picks up again" but many are disappointed with Breaking Dawn.Betsy: I LOVED count of Monte Cristo
Darla: Why are you pissed after reading Half-Blood Prince - It's been awhile since I read it.
Robin.
Darla, don't worry about the fact that you were pissed after Half-Blood Prince, the 7th book is so worth it! Everything really does come together. I've only read the 7th book twice but it is amazing.Robin, Jodi Picoult is great if you like books that deal with controversial subjects.
Hi Jeane,I will recommend the fallowing books:"The Year Of The Flood"by Eduardo Mendoza an author from Barcelona Spain."Nazism" a book about the rise of the Nazi Party. If, you do not feel that reading the Nazis is your cup of tea, then, i Will suggest:Love In The Time Of Cholera,A Map Of The World,The Beauty Myth,Raising Fences,Backlash by Morris L .West.
Jeane wrote: "Thank you Emilee, will look them up. i have read already 3 stories by Eduardo Mendoza."Please tell me which other books have you read by Mendoza!.
Only have the spanish titles:El Laberinto De Las Aceitunas
La ciudad de los prodigios
El Misterio de La Cripta Embrujada
Jeane wrote: "Emilee by who is nazism written, didn't find it with the title."The authors are J.Noakes and G.pridham.
Thanks Jessica. I've already started it... It just took a little to get past the shock. If there is possibly anyone left who has not read the HP series or has not read "The Half-Blood Prince" -- Do not read below:
Robin:
***********SPOILER ALERT*************
Quite simply, I was alright with it until Dumbledore dies. And I might have been okay with that even, had it not been that Snape was the one to do it. I still am hopeful that there is more to it than what meets the eye, however, I was not pleased. :(
Laura (6348), yes it does seem darker so far. I'm still not even a hundred pages in (sick baby here and it's the weekend, so the hubby is home, too) and I'm dying to get farther!!Yes, Fiona (6349) you must read!!
Emily... I am not sure what you were talking about when you italized my comment about Libba Bray's book.
I just started The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls. A friend highly recommended it. I was looking for a good story, but something that didn't require a lot of thought or emotion. I had started The Weight of Water by Anita Shreve and put it down till after the holidays!
Hi Fiona,I am currently reading,"A Map Of The World",two weeks a go i read "love In Time Of Cholera".I do not have any Christmas book to read, but, that is OK.
Susanna wrote: "I read Company of Liars this summer, Kathy, and really enjoyed it."Susanna, thanks for the positive words about Company of Liars. I've only read about 15 pages so far, but I'm liking what I've read.
Carrie wrote: "I'm reading The Devil's Arithmetic after a rec from a fellow teac..."I read The Devil's Arithmetic some years ago and thought it was one of the best YA fiction books about the Holocaust. The movie with Kirsten Dunst was an excellent adaptation. I highly recommend you watch it after reading the book.
Yahoo Fiona!!! I knew you would or had to love prodigal summer!!!! Dadadada....yes! :-))))Started sepulchre by Kate Mosse today. Really liked her previous book The labyrinth and for now this one looks to be the same good style.
Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto--started it before and neglected it so I am giving it a fresh start.
YAY Fiona so glad you loved Prodigal Summer by Kingsolver. She is so wonderful.*sigh*
Must.read.again!
I just finished Fight Club (last night). I had heard so much about it that I decided it was finally time to read it. I picked up Hamilton's Blood Noir today. I have been meaning to read it since it came out a couple months ago, but read some other books instead. I originally really liked the series but recently I haven't been as enthused (spelling) as I once was with the series. But I am invested in characters and have to continue to read the series until it ends.
I heard Edward Norton narrating in my head when I read Fight Club (I watched the movie first). I didn't mind though because Norton is high on my list of Guys I Would Blow.
Hi I'm new here. Currently reading Boone's Lick by Larry McMurtry. He is such a great writer, there is no way I would normally read a western but after reading Lonesome Dove I was hooked.
right now im reading sir thursday by garth nix cool series alhthough a little unrealistic
where do you guys get all these different series
anywy i am also on the 10th book of the Wheel of time by Robert Jordan
cool series
I was gonna get Lonesome Dove the last time I went to the library but the sheer size was intimidating--at least considering the books I already have waiting to be read.
Lonesome Dove is one of my all-time favorites. I remember after reading all 1100 or so pages of that book that I wanted even more. Not that the story wasn't complete, but I just wanted it to go on and on. It was really really good.
Carrie,I read Devil's Arithmetic during the Fall Challenge. I enjoyed it very much. I also read many books about the Nazis and the Holocaust while in high school. I haven't watched any movies about it though. I'm sure that would be extremely disturbing. It's bad enough just reading about it.
I'm in the Christmas spirit reading mood - this morning, I finished Dashing Through the Snow by Mary and Carol Higgins Clark, which was ok. My next one is Fannie Flagg's A Redbird Christmas, which I'm sure will be very sweet. I absolutely adored Welcome to the World Baby Girl, and I would love to read more of Flagg's books when I have the time. Reading Christmas books during this time of year also makes me happy :)
Lori wrote: "I am currently knee deep in the Dexter Series... I finished Darkly Dreaming Dexter last nite (a day and a half), and I am already half way through the Dearly Devoted Dexter.I have Dexter in the..."
Dexter is probably the best television series to ever hit primetime. I'm glad I read the books first. I think they are better but the series sure does have great appeal!
Ofmatt wrote: "The movie is classic. :D"Hi Offmat, Timothy, what did you think about the movie The ight club? I heard it was a classic too and someone said it was great just like the book but when I saw it I decided not to watch it again....not that it was bad, not at all but......hard, raw...don't know how to explain.
Atishay, know only the one with Brad Pitt and the Norton guy.Kristina, how is The christmas mystery? Read many of his other books and adore them, but not that one. I did have a look at it at the library yesterday.
That was really intense. A bit too much for me. It felt so raw, hard that I could sometimes almsot not watch it anymore.
Jessica: I definitely have put Jodi Picoult on my list because others here have recommended and I trust their opinions - but you have my curiosity up....what is controversial about this? And because of more chatter later on I have to move it up on my TBR -- Shakes a fist at all the TNBBC - I do need to sleep sometime!!Fiona - fantastic fiction is a great site -- thanks for pointing it out for me - they have both of my hubby's books as well - Very comprehensive site for US authors considering it is across the pond as it were.
Darla - I thought that might be what you were referring to -- I kind of expected it. It was sad to see him go but I thought it was "true" to where the store had to go so I'm okay with it. My husband had to kill off a character I loved in his fifth book. But again "it made sense" so I made my peace with it. -- Oh and I agree Darla - don't let that stop you from reading book 7!!
Wife of GR author: Michael J. Sullivan | The Crown Conspiracy (10/08) | Avempartha (04/09)
Jeane: I'm not sure if I like it or not yet. Just gotten to December 7th, since I'm reading one chapter a day, like you're supposed to. I'm not completely drawn into the story or anything like I was with Sophie's World. I guess we'll have to wait and see. How come you didn't like it?
lol Robin -- I'm already half-way through the last book... and I'm still ticked off about Dumbledore... We'll see if I change my mind once I'm done. :)
