Ive never been a real online entity to speak of Kernos. To be honest, Goodreads is my first real foray into online relationships. I don't do Facebook or Myspace and have never had friendships outside of real life. I had a good friend pass away the other day and it made me think of all my friends and many of those on here came to mind. I suppose I'm just able to be alot more Me here than I am in the real world. I have to compartmentalize my friends. Work, college, high school, Army, church. I've never been the same person to each group of friends so it's been novel to just be me on here and so I've come to really love (a word I don't use flippantly) some of the folks here. I'll definitely be looking into planning for my "online presence" in my will as well. Thanks for the suggestion

carol. | 2616 comments Yes, the online community is interesting and opens up a whole new dynamic in social relationships. I have a friend in Germany who recently died. She was getting divorced from her husband and her family was in the U.S. so her facebook page became one of the main ways the family shared information to college & other far-flung friends. There's actually small businesses now that will keep online access info confidential, but then manage it for you after you die.

C.M. Barrett (elfspirit) | 68 comments I read the Mists of Avalon about 6 times. I also read the Duncton Series by William Horwood several times. Don't know how familiar the latter is in the U.S. I got all 6 books in London.

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) You know i hadn't thought ab oiut what to o if I died as far as online things. A girl I went to high school with died of cancer real young and I was floored by it. Then another girls brother died in a farming accident, just wow its scary how sudden death can be. Todd knows all my passwords in case he needs them I guess and i think i'd have him tell people just so they knew. We had a hard time telling all the people that knew his mom that she passed that some didn't know until 2 years later. We felt so bad :(

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments I've never had an online friend die but I came here from a wedding planning social site. THere was always tons of drama (oh the drama!) and lots of ladies leaving due to engagements breaking up. (and other dramatic reasons. Big huge posts "I'm leaving!!!").

I ended up leaving after getting married because the drama got to be too much.

message 107: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) On my old boards, where I spent over four years, there were two deaths, at least three weddings between group members (one of which I went to - flying alone to California, and I'd never met either bride or groom in person before (and couldn't have picked either out of a lineup) - or, good lord, anyone else in attendance for that matter)(Best.Wedding.Ever), an apartment fire in which a group couple lost everything, stormy leavetakings followed frequently by sneakings back, offshoot boards filled with sound and fury, celebrity guest stars, and drama? In spades. And thinking of the Dreaded Map Project still makes me flinch.

*twitch*

See?

Back in November of 2000, the SWG forums opened up and I joined them. Made some friends and still post on private forums with two different groups that formed back then even to this day, even though none of us have played in years.

I've seen deaths, rage-quits, disappearances and even one arrest.

And yet I couldn't spot any of these people out of a lineup either.

It's just so weird being part of an online community sometimes...

message 109: by [deleted user] (new)

Well we'll have none of that drama here :) We need some FA bouncers. Danielle is entirely too sweet and Jason is Canadian ;)

message 110: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) I think you win online-community-Yahtzee with the arrest; if any Tolkien fans got run in, I never heard about it. Though there was the story about the flaming motorized barstool ...

Weird, small green man with slingshot? I have no idea what you mean. :D

I mean ^**^ (it's a bat!)

I'm going to find your house, Tracey.

Then I'm going to go there.

And I will destroy all "6" keys on every keyboard in the entire place.

Tracey (stewartry) *giggles* I'm done now. Really.

Maybe.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments So... you guys, er guy, well whatever the two of you personality wise while apparently recognizing that you are two aspects of the same person don't really get along and yet haven't settled on which is the dominant personality???????

message 119: by [deleted user] (new)

It varies depending on time of day, season, weather and the last alcoholic beverage drank.

message 120: by Annette (new)

Annette Hart | 73 comments I, like Carol, often skim for my first read of a book. I usually start sensibly and then have to check what happens - especially at the end - so that I don't get too upset! My family tease me about it mercilessly. After that I'll have to re-read to enjoy the book properly.

I also enjoy returning to favourite books because its like visiting an old friend.

message 121: by [deleted user] (new)

It also depends on who has dibs on various topics. For example, Ala was kind enough to wait and allow me to make fun of MrsJ for her affinity for ninja cars :)

message 122: by Maggie (new)

Maggie K | 730 comments and since Grant is prohibited from talking about drinking stories, those are all Ala's!

message 123: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh no. That's a universal taboo for us both.

I have, luckily, never run afoul of the law or gnomes. But there are far too many blacked out nights, where I apparently continued partying with no memory, for me to even want to broach the subject.

message 124: by [deleted user] (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments That's like a black car that moves silently and sometimes hires out as an assassin?

message 127: by [deleted user] (new)

It's any car that's just really, really sneaky and enjoys suddenly appearing out of nowhere* in front of MrsJ and causing her injury.

*it may have been parked at the time. (so tricksy, those ninja cars.)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments Ahhh....so?

message 129: by Tracey (new)

Tracey (stewartry) But it was silent, and may have been hired to attack MrsJ. Someone may be after her books too.

OMG there's a conspiracy.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments I don't know...not willing to distrust all cars. I'm of the 60s, I still miss my muscle cars. BUT I'll go along with the idea of a conspiracy. They're everywhere.

message 135: by Amanda (new)

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) I love classic cars! I've always wanted an Impala, Ford Fairlane or Dodge Charger. I'd have it all souped up and shiney, a nice dark bottle green, midnight blue or purple with shiny chrome and an engine that didn't just purred but roared! Hahaha I'd drive all over the place in that thing!

...Um yes I'm still totally a respectable, intelligent woman...With a really big fondness for driving in great cars with the windows down and rock roaring out! Mwhahahaha!

I mean that would be a delightful distraction...*vroom vroom*

MrsJoseph *grouchy* (mrsjoseph) | 7282 comments My Poppa has a '57 chevy and a '68 chevy. He also has the frame to some old school bubble shaped car (ford or chevy, can't tell). I WANT that '57 even though it needs some work now...hubby says that since we don't have a house it would be a BAD IDEA (and even if we had a house it would cost too much to maintain, not safe, etc). He told me if my grandparents leave it to me he's going to make me sell it. *Major frowny face*

message 139: by Sonja (new)

Sonja (crvena_sonja) | 76 comments Amanda, I'm totally with you! Driving with a roaring engine and rock blaring out the windows might get me pulled over (especially in the DC-metropolitan area) but it would totally be worth it!

In other news, I have opted to be social instead of re-reading my usual fare, either fantasy YA, like Tamora Peirce, or totally fluffy romance novels, don't judge me. I tend to digest books well on the first read-through so it's rare that I go back and re-read unless I'm looking to waste some time...

lol that's why I live in the boonies of Ohio where you gotta be an ass to get arrested for that. ^-^

Hey read what you like Sonja! While the fancy chocolate(lovely high or world building fantasy)tastes nice sometimes you just want the simplicity of a hershey bar (romance and other fluffy fun stuff).

I vote we make like Lucy and Ethel and find a way to keep that baby *deviously rubs hands together making sinister face*

While I can understand storage could be iffy not all classic cars are hard to maintain. Actually the prevalence of rebuilding has made the parts a bit more available. Maybe if you can prove its doable he might be less hesitant.

I would hope so.

It's already been restored once but the person who did it scammed my grandparents out of some money. They used inferior materials/fabrics so all of the seating has to be re-done. They also didn't use the proper paint so that needs to be re-done, too.

My husband feels that we would be stuck paying a lot of money to re-restore it and that storage up here would be required. If we get a house with a two car garage I think he STILL wouldn't be ok with me keeping it...but I want to work on him. *wonders how much it would cost to get an estimate on restoration*

Amanda M. Lyons (amandamlyons) Ouch I'd be mad at the ripoff artists too! Hmm research it and see what you can find. I think its a valid investment myself.

Don't worry, Tracey, I'll defend you.

As far as the internet crossing with real life goes, I just moved in with a boyfriend I met alone. xD

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments A '57 Chevy????? Wow, that's like one of the "dream classic cars". Is it a Belair (Bel Air) or the Delray model (which is a Bel Air but upscale). The Bel Air was made in Bel Air, 210 and 150. There was also available in a station wagon, but that's no so "cool" :).

Great car...and much coveted.

If I'm not mistaken it's a Belair. It's in the garage and has been there for a while. No one drives it anymore.

And to think, when I was a kid I had a major issue with having to ride around in such an "old car." You live and you learn.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 5387 comments As I aid for many classic car folks the '57 Chevy is the grail. Always loved that model.
