Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews

Description on Goodreads:
Atlanta is a city immersed in magic. Like the tides, when the magic is up, modern technology fails (guns don't fire, cars don't start, etc.) and magicians and other supernatural beings rule the world. In the midst of all this are organizations like the Order of Knights of Merciful Aid whose mission it is to keep the peace. But when knight-diviner Greg Feldman -- the guardian of Daniels -- is ripped to shreds by some unknown monstrosity, the butt-kicking heroine vows to avenge his murder at any cost. Her investigation, however, places her directly between the Pack, a powerful clan of shape-changers, and the Masters of the Dead, a group of necromancers who control a virtual army of vampires

Format: Paperback, 260 pages
Published: March 27th 2007 by Ace

Sashana Did anyone read this one yet? I must say that it now one of my favorite Urban Fantasy books. I can't stop reading the series, I'm already on book 3!

Sashana I really think you'll like it, Lisa. I can't stop reading the books. I even read them in class...and my teachers have noticed :P

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Ordered it Sunday so it should have shipped out Monday. Thank you graduation money! ;)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments I listened to it on audio. I had to listen to the first two chapters twice, but then UF is not a genre with which I am very familiar. Great first book in the series and audio was well narrated. Here is my GoodRead review (no spoilers): LK's Review of MB.

Angela (angieerickson) | 338 comments I liked Kate, but I wasn't invested into the characters until the end of the book. Her description and background was too vague and we gradually learned about the main character through the book. I prefer to know a bit more about the main, so I can connect and understand the character...otherwise I end up routing for the bad guy and hoping the character and book goes up in flames. Fortunately, by the end of the book, I understood Kate and could picture her and Curran easily.

My favourite scene is in the restaurant when Kate and the good doctor are on the second date. Curran is eyeballing Kate from across the room and she smiles and sends him a saucer of milk. I loved that!

I couldn't grasp the world that Ilona Andrews introduced. It was definitely original, but not clearly explained. This sometimes happens in book one of a series, and I plan to give Kate and Curran another chance in Magic Burns.

Angela (angieerickson) | 338 comments I wasn't a fan until the end of the book. I just started book 2, Magic Burns and I'm loving it! I'm glad I stuck with the series.

Naevehsa I loved it... burned through the series. So good. Love Love Love Curran

Sashana You are a woman after my own heart, Ingrid. I read the series in less than a week. I can't wait for the new book.

Rachel (treychel) | 1484 comments Been done with this book for a little bit now. Just haven't had time to comment! Here's what I got...

Great book! Complex world, deep characters, action, and humor all in one book. Nicccce.

Andrews definitely has an alternate universe going on right here in the United States. I really like the idea of having "magic" surges. They are similar to what we call power surges, but are a little more detrimental to every day life. Makes me wonder if the power surges we have are actually small magic surges. Hmmmmmm....

This book was so close to five stars, but I couldn't do it. I needed more information at the beginning of the novel about all the magic that takes place. There are a lot of characters, groups of people, and a lot of terminology to deal with(and there shold be if you are trying to establish a new universe) and not enough description and explanation. If someone was described or something explained it was not for a few pages after dialogue or an event had taken place. I then had to go back and re-read that whole section so I could understand better.

With this novel I only wanted more description. A glossary in the back like the Fever series has would have been awesome!

Jenn T Rogers I'm having some trouble getting into it. But it's not really my genre. I'm trying though since you guys seem to like it so much!
