Why must the directors change a movie from the book, to make the movie just seem dumb?

When i went to see the movie, i was looking forward to it!! Yay, a movie about an amazing book!! NO! The movie was sooooo far off from the book, I couldn't believe my eyes!!! They left out a character fro peet sake!!! Does any one else feel this way???

n my opinion if i had never read the books I would have absoultly LOVED the movie, but i did, and Idk I just don't get what the directors saw to have to change the movie from the book so much.
I was incredibly disappointed by the movie. Judging from the fact that, last I heard, there are no plans for a second movie, so were many other people. The movie was a shame. I understand having to cut plots points, compress a story, etc., in order to fit a movie adaption - but they just butchered it. :o(
I totally agree! Did any one else notice that Ares daughter( I think got that right)wasn't in the movie, and is in the book, as a extremely important person in the second book...but like Mike said I guess it doesn't matter since there are no plans for a second movie...which i am totally cool with since they have practiclly made it impossible do to what they did with the first book.
You have to change the movie so you can fit it into a 2 hour movie. Granted in Percy Jackson the movie left out a lot!

wel lwhen you think of it when your reading the book your the director you choose what percy and annabeth look like but personally the black grover was cool
In the movie they made grover a white boy with a gotie, but n the book he is really black wth an afro

I wonder if the directors even read the book befor they make a movie based on it. :)
They probably knew that there wasn't gonna b a 2nd movie so they didnt worry about ares's daugther and they probably thought that instead of making the entire movie about going on a trip to Hell, they thought adding suspense and goals that they have to reach wud b more entertaining.
Yha what was with the magical map??? I really did like the casino scenes though good music and setting. I watched the movie before the book and then read the book then watched the movie again. My liking of the movie TOTALLY changed. It was one of my fav movies before the book. Now it seems really weak. :(
I saw the movie on a plane from Athens to Philadelphia, and I must say, it sucked!! They based the entire plot on an entire half a page of the book. Granted, the pearls were important, but not important enough to turn those fifty lines into a two hour long movie! And there were so many things that were just wrong! "I have feelings for you, but I haven't decided whether they're good or bad." Who says that?! Oh wait...movie Annabeth. Independently, I loved the movie. But having read the book, I just couldn't take it seriously.
Personally I think the movie wasn't that good. I bought a dvd because I didn't see it. (Waste of money) For lack of nothing better to do I watched a special feature where Rick Riordan said he was very excited about the movie. So, I don't want to say that much about the movie.
I never get it when good authors abandon their books like that for the crappy directors out there to deal with
I have to agree with everyone who said the movie stunk and who said it was weak and anything like that. I don't think that the directors read the book either! If they did, well they have a pretty bad memory...no offence to them...I don't see why Rick R. was so excited? They were totally messing up hs book! Wow, I just can't believe how bad it was...I would have to say I am glad i didn't buy the movie, and just saw it in theaters, but i still agree....waste of money!!!!

I was really disappointed in the movie. I was so excited they were coming out with a movie, because I LOVE this series! 1. The whole plot line was CHANGED!
2. Actress playing Annabeth looks nothing like her
3. Wheres Clarisse and Ares?
4. Arent they 12 in the book? They're like in high school in the movie!
5.Now the other movies (if theyre making more) are gonna be different too....

I know!! I hated how much they changed it! are they even making a second one? I think i would have actually liked the movie had I not read the books, but seeing as they are one of my favorite series, I just couldn't stand it.
Aswers to List.1-I KNOW. I was disappointed too.
2-I KNOW. CC claims she looked like the "smart brunette".
3-They were skipped over.
4-CC claims he couldn't have twelve-year-olds swinging swords and driving cars.
5-They're not making a sequel. This movie was a catastrophe.

i have to agree with every single one of you!!! HORRIBLE MOVIE!!!!! I don't how it was possible to change it that much and still let it have the seame name...but it was done, who knows how though...
The characters were WAY too old, Annabeth was supposed to have blonde hair and grey eyes, Grover's personality was WAY OFF! In the book they didn't go on a big journey to find the pearls!!!!

Also, Nick Jonas might have ruined the movie for me, but he does remind me of Grover.

Disappointed. I will never understand directors! It's like watching a different movie! I'm like, 'is this really the movie? This is it?'. Every fucking time. Ugh. Hopefully, they'll do better to the next movies..

Grover is okayish but Annabeth looks a bit dumb
