Why must the directors change a movie from the book, to make the movie just seem dumb?

Actually, you've asked about one of the great unanswered mysteries -- at least to authors. I can guess at some of the answers but doubt anyone knows them all. They include planned movie running time, cost to produce complex film sets, overall budget, beefing up action and/or sex scenes. No author is immune. Even William Shakespeare and Charles Dickens probably spin in their graves at some versions of their works. Even today's major authors can have little or no control of the film results of their writing--even if they had a contract that said otherwise. Back in 2009, "best-selling author Clive Cussler was ordered by a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to pay $13.9 million in legal fees to the production company that adapted his novel Sahara into one of 2005’s biggest flops." according to an online article at the time by Entertainment Weekly.
