Jimelle Salyers (jsalyers) | 20 comments Wow! So many amazing and interesting people here!

My name is Jimelle Salyers, and I'm a rather eclectic writer and reader. A babe in the publishing woods, so to speak, it's great to find a place to learn.

I'm the author of a non-fiction book, The Corny Handbook and a literary short story, Down In Town. I also collaborated with my mom to publish her book of paranormal short stories, Twilight Tales. We're working on a horror novel and a book of children's rhymes, as well. I told you I was eclectic, or maybe the word is eccentric [[shrug]].

You can find me on Twitter @JimelleSalyers and on my blogs:
Book reviews - www.kindle-kandy.com
Book covers - www.ebook-bling.com

Nice meeting everyone, and have a happy day!

Luna Nightwyn (nighwyn) | 8 comments Hello people, I am Luna Nightwyn. I wrote poetry since I was 13. After my father died in 2006 I just lost motivation for it. I did however take all those old poems, well what survived from relocating and then an epic hard drive crash, and self-published them.

Up till now I have only done short stories but I want to try to write something a bit longer this time. I am posting the first few chapters of what I am writing here on this site; hopefully I can get some feedback as I am still testing the waters with this. I look forward to meeting new friends here and hopefully learning a lot about myself and my writing.

I have a facebook/twitter feel free to add me.

And I have a website at Nightwyn.com

message 611: by Richard (new)

Richard Godwin | 1 comments Benoit LeLievre reviews my novel Mr. Glamour at Dead End Follies. Here's a sample

Her Cartier sunglasses did little to hide her discomfort, She wanted to wear cheap clothes, like the mothers at the supermarkets, and hide behind brands that had no cachet. The enjoyment of being watched was gone from her, and she wondered if there were places she could go anonymously and blend into a crowd, lost among the little people she never know.

There are various ways to stand out in the overcrowded literary landscape, if you're not the second coming of Francis Scott Fitzgerald. Richard Godwin is a writer that found his method to success but mixing up skills, originality and absolute fearlessness in order to push the boundaries of certain genres. APOSTLE RISING, published last year, was one of the first psychological thrillers I've read that went beyond the ghost of Thomas Harris. MR. GLAMOUR explores the same format, but goes in another direction. I'd like to tell you it goes in the opposite direction of APOSTLE RISING, but the reality is far more abstract. Not only it's a novel that makes its own path, but it's taking more inspiration outside literature. Ladies and gentlemen, let me introduce you MR. GLAMOUR a fine-and-dandy, over-the-top, GIALLO extravaganza of a novel. Yep, you heard me.

You can read it all here

message 612: by Darrell (new)

Darrell Delamaide Hi everyone, I became an indie author last September when I published the historical thriller The Grand Mirage by Darrell Delamaide .

I had published three books previously with mainstream publishers (Doubleday and Dutton) but now the industry has, thankfully, evolved and digital publishing offers this great alternative to authors.

I've gotten the rights back to my previously published financial thriller Gold and will be re-issuing that next week. I know indie authors are supposed to stick to a single genre and build up a critical mass of titles to succeed, but I probably will be dividing my time between these two genres.

Look forward to discussions here. I'd be interested to hear about the experience of other authors who have gone to publishers to get rights back. Penguin was not helpful.

Hiya Darrell, nice to meet you. I published my first indie book in 2008 and had never heard of any such need for critical mass in a certain genre. I write in multiple genres, though sci-fi is probably what I'd consider my 'main' genre.

Let us know how your re-acquisition goes. I'm sure there are other who have or are attempting the same thing.

message 627: by gj (new)

gj indieBRAG | 13 comments It is so interesting to see how many authors are authors who are finally following their dream after finishing a career! I think this makes it even harder to get a traditional publisher yet it may be that they have a lot more to say and a lot more skill to say it. At B.R.A.G.Medallion we don't age discriminate! We actually do have a few books that were written in just this way and, obviously, our readers really thought they were worthwhile books. I think the message is never give up you dreams and traditional publishing is not the only way to be a success. We are also compiling some info at the site about what readers find turns them off, it is worth noting. No matter how great your story is, there are things that will stop a reader on the first few pages - take note!

I am just entering into this mad world of social networking and marketing. As I'm finding it more than a little mind-boggling, it is lovely to find this group and see so much support from all the different authors to one another. I am sure I will learn loads from you all, thanks

I alternate food essays with novels. After working with a literary agent in the past and collecting dozens of complimentary but ultimately apologetic letters from publishers and film studios, I have to say that self-publishing is fantastic. I recently had my first book signing, and just wrote a blog post about it if any other indie authors are interested in how the experience went:

Rachel Fisher (rachel_e_fisher) | 4 comments I am Rachel Fisher, author of Eden's Root (Eden's Root Trilogy, #1) by Rachel Fisher . I am not certain what motivated me to self-publish, but I am enjoying the experience of meeting the community immensely.

I blog about books and food and health. My experience as an ovarian cancer survivor (i am all good, this is a happy tale folks), helped me to give the 'Scary.Ass.Real' (book blogger sic) to my tale. What do I enjoy most about writing? Spending hours at play with my characters. It's probably unnatural how much I love them...

If you are interested in an eclectic blog visit www.rachelefisher.com I recently participated in the launch of The Book Blogger's Cookbook 2012 which is by Christy Dorrity and features a beautiful marriage of food and ya books. LOVE this idea! Can't wait to make the Matched Bubble Tea. (I heart boba as well so this is no surprise.)

Alexander McNabb (alexandermcnabb) Hey all

As you'll see from my GoodReads profile, I'm the author of Olives - a novel set in Jordan. As well as ebook editions, Olives is also available in print and, because the region where I live (the Middle East) is effectively barred from buying ebooks by Amazon/Apple I have also printed and distributed a Middle East edition, which is available in bookshops in the UAE, Lebanon and Bahrain.

Which is a bit different, isn't it? :)

If anyone with a review blog is interested in reviewing the book, I'm more than happy to hand out Kindle copies, so just hit me up.

James Field An Ode to Indie authors.

Having found a Goodread's thread,
And read through every link,
I smelt frustration oozing,
Which made me start to think.

Do we write for fame and fortune,
Or some other charming treasure,
Or is our motive purely,
Based on joy and pleasure?

If your main ambition,
Is gaining wealth and fame,
Try marrying into royalty,
Or win the lottery game.

But if we write for pleasure,
And three or four read our stuff,
And if those few enjoyed it,
Isn't that reward enough?

James Field
