Andrew | 4 comments I'm Andrew. I lurked on Reddit for a while and was sold on it when I started to read /r/books. Just joined up on Goodreads as well. I used to read a ton when I was younger (yay living right near a library!) but as I grew older I got out of the habit. Trying desperately to get back into it and reading everything I can get a decent recommendation on until I really find my niche.

Heyas Andrew.

What have you read so far that you've really liked?

message 53: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 4 comments Past couple of months I've read Slaughterhouse Five, Cat's Cradle, Great Expectations, and Atlas Shrugged. I liked them all, some more than others, but I found them all well worth the read. Not sure where I'm going next. I have a desire to read Brave New World, but also things a little more current like The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo or Cryptonomicon which both came highly recommended to me.

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

I still haven't read Brave New World either. Probably should remedy that, just need to find the time to fit it in.

I'd say go with something newer for now, though. Just to get a taste of what's out there currently. If it's not to your liking, you could always go back to the classics.

whimsicalmeerkat The Millenium series and Cryptonomicon are very different. Each is good, but in different ways.

I'd have to recommend Crytonomicon. Haven't read Girl with the dragon tattoo, but cyrpto is one of my all time favorites.

message 57: by Steve (new)

Steve (mixmix) Just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman and Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami. Both excellent works, Kafka.. really surprised me.

message 58: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat Have you read The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle? I love both it and Kafka, but in my opinion it's the slight better of the two.

message 59: by Christopher (new)

Christopher (chrisrow83) Hey, I'm a 28 yr old female, disabled so I spend a lot of time online and reading. I like all kinds of books but my favorite is scifi, post-apocalypse, zombies, etc. I read nonfiction and more ordinary novels too. Just whatever looks good!

message 60: by [deleted user] (new)

welcome Sand :)

What's your favorite of your recent reads?

message 61: by Laurel (new)

Laurel (emmalish) | 9 comments Hey, I'm Laurel. I heard about goodreads a few months ago and left myself a reminder to check it out, but didn't get around to signing up until just a few days ago. I found my way to this group via Reddit.

I used to read a lot more than I do now (I blame the internet), but I'll still read a book a month or so. I like fiction, especially dark humour. I generally find an author I like and then read everything I can get my hands on. Right now I'm really into Carl Hiaasen, but I'm taking a break and reading John Dies at the End.

Welcome Laurel :)

vikki (scaboodles) | 2 comments Jello, redditors. I'm vikki. I'm about to get my two year badge with reddit but I was a long-time lurker before. When I joined goodreads last year, I turned to reddit for to-read ideas and added most every single one. Since then, I've fallen hard for some authors like David Foster Wallace, Bill Bryson, Haruki Murakami, and Isaac Asimov. I've been really pummeling through some science reading, too, and I just became a new moderator for r/science_bookclub. I'm super stoked for this and invite anyone who's interested to tag along. So hi.

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Vikki.

I haven't even hit one year yet, though I lurked for more.

I'm such a noob.

message 65: by Jack (last edited Aug 28, 2011 01:44PM) (new)

Jack (attackofjack) I'm fixing to get my 4 year badge. I've been on there quite some time.

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Only badge I have is verified e-mail.

yay.

message 67: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I'm not sure if I have that one, actually. I have mine from the DC Rally, 2 Year & Mold.

message 68: by Jack (new)

Jack (attackofjack) I have a handful of badges from Secret Santa, verified email, and the 3 Year Club badge. This is all.

I know, right?

message 71: by Simeon (last edited Nov 20, 2011 05:52PM) (new)

Simeon (yeahiknow3) I like this thread, and I don't want it to die, but I am not writing about myself either.

message 72: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat I feel that way about this group in general

message 73: by Simeon (new)

Simeon (yeahiknow3) See, I'd ask what everyone's reading, but I can just check your profiles. I'd ask how you liked a book, but we have reviews for that. Is anyone else going to pick up 1Q84, btw?

message 74: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat *sigh* Someday, definitely, but The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York is up next for the doorstopper sized reads.

message 75: by [deleted user] (new)

I'll get to Murakami eventually, honest.

message 76: by Simeon (new)

Simeon (yeahiknow3) Well, that's ambitious. Are you interested in the history of New York or just curious?

message 77: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat It's more that Master of the Senate: The Years of Lyndon Johnson was hands down the best biography I've ever read, not to mention being incredibly detailed and well-researched, and before going onto the guy's other two Johnson bios I decided to check this one out. I mean, if it tells you anything, my tech-y, gaming, programmer boyfriend recommended Master of the Senate & considers it one of his favorite books, but hasn't been able to get more than 5 pages into Snow Crash without becoming bored and annoyed.

message 78: by Simeon (new)

Simeon (yeahiknow3) That's really helpful actually. Snow Crash irritated the crap out of me too.

whimsicalmeerkat Yeahiknow3 wrote: "That's really helpful actually. Snow Crash irritated the crap out of me too."

I enjoyed it, but I had to look past a lot of the stylistic stuff. I greatly preferred Cryptonomicon.

message 80: by Simeon (new)

Simeon (yeahiknow3) I've been trying to bring myself to read Cryptonomicon...

message 81: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat It took me around 100 pages to really get into it, but I loved it. It's not as focused on being hip & flashy & such, if that makes sense.

message 82: by Seth (last edited Nov 22, 2011 03:24PM) (new)

Seth T. (sethhahne) | 6 comments Hey all. I'm Seth. I'm a web and graphics designer/would-be author.

I'm a big fan of Murakami, Bolaño, Eco, and Ishiguro. Also loved Franny and Zooey and Octavian Nothing and Anansi Boys. I used to read several novels a month, but in March I started a review site for graphic novels and keeping up my reading and writing for that keeps me busy enough so that I only have time for maybe one novel per month now (sad).

At the moment, I'm nearly 1/3 of my way through 1Q84 (which I'm very much enjoying). After that, I've got Prague Cemetery queued up.

message 83: by [deleted user] (new)

Welcome Seth :)

100 books? That's crazy, especially considering the books that you've listed are the size of phonebooks. How do you read enough to meet that goal? I just barely made it to 40 books this year and two of those were Anna Karenina and Infinite Jest.

message 92: by [deleted user] (new)

Heyas Matthew :)

message 93: by Fathermocker (new)

Fathermocker | 22 comments Pretty ambitious! Welcome Matthew!

message 94: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (leavesoflorien) | 2 comments Hey Matthew, I intend to read 100 books too. I don't know if many of them will be thousand page reads (though I am reading a GRRM book right now), but I plan to utilize my academic research to fuel my book count.

100 books IS possible, but you really have to stay on your game.

message 95: by Chris (new)

Chris (theheaventree) | 4 comments Hey everybody, i'm Chris. I'm studying high school education (english and history) and my reading tends to be geared towards classics and modern history. But reading is a fairly new hobby for me and i pretty much want to read everything. Crime, scifi, literary, poetry, PoMo, high modernist, whatever, i'm easy.

Also, i recently started moderating r/bookclub, which has turned me from a lurker into a full-blwon reddit addict. Our books this month (shameless plug) are The Count of Monte Cristo & The Master and Margarita. Feel free to add me on goodreads, or check out r/bookclub if you ever feel like a group read!

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

We're doing Master and Margarita this month in the SciFi & Fantasy Book club here on GR. So if you wanna join in there <.<

:P

message 97: by Chris (new)

Chris (theheaventree) | 4 comments It looks like my reddit addiction is likely to seep over into GR as well >_>

Count me in Ala! :D

message 98: by Fathermocker (new)

Fathermocker | 22 comments I know, I hate that too. But it's democracy, you don't always get what you want. There will always be a huge amount of people who will think Twilight is the bee's knees.

message 99: by Seth (new)

Seth T. (sethhahne) | 6 comments A bee's knees: small, crunchy, and covered with flower sperm. I never understood what was so marvelous about bees' knees.

message 100: by Lis (new)

Lis (lazyseagull) | 5 comments bahahaha, Seth, I just laughed. loudly.
Anyway, I really think someone should edit the title and say "Those who place twilight in the top ten shall be quartered" or something.
