message 353: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments I was reading earlier comments and I want to know if making sushi after reading Silk would count as 25 points (if it does I am at 120)

message 356: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) 110! I just finished The Frog Princess (my YA book)

message 357: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments Total after reading Dracula (15 points for reading something by an author who is no longer living) I'm up to 90 points. Maybe I'll actually break 100 after all!

message 358: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments Melody - sure making Sushi after reading a book set in Japan counts..so 120 it is.

message 359: by Charity (new)

Charity (charityross) 5 POINT TASKS:

7. READ A BOOK WITH ANY OF THE FOLLOWING IN THE TITLE (VAMPIRE, ZOMBIE, WEREWOLF, DEVIL, GHOST, GOBLIN, WITCH, OR FRANKENSTEIN):
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley 10/12

CURRENT POINT TOTAL: 130 (10/12)

message 360: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Hi Liz, I noticed that A short history of tractors in Ukrain seems to be a popular book while I thought it looked like boring, just the cover and the title then.

How is it? Interesting and fast read?

message 361: by Joanie (new)

Joanie | 714 comments I'm curious about A Short History too-I'm reading it for my live book club but haven't been overly excited to get it yet.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I had 60 points, and read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.

It satisfied "with character's name in title," worth five points (bizarrely low for a 1000-page book, but there you go).

New total: 65 points.

message 363: by Jen (last edited Oct 21, 2008 05:09PM) (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments Here's my attempt! I'm working as hard as I can on this. I'll have no chance of getting a super high score, but this is too much fun to pass up!

5 POINT TASKS

10 POINT TASKS

4. READ A BOOK WITH A ONE WORD TITLE - Brisingr

6. READ A NON-FICTION BOOK - American Rifle: A Biography

9. READ A COLLECTION OF SHORT STORIES, ESSAYS, OR A PLAY - Ruins Metropolis

15 POINT TASKS
1. READ A BOOK BY AN AUTHOR YOU'VE NEVER READ BEFORE - The Outstretched Shadow

4. READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY AN ASIAN OR ASIAN AMERICAN AUTHOR - Geisha: A Life

6. READ A BOOK WRITTEN BY A GOOD READS AUTHOR - House of Leaves

10. READ A NOVEL BY AN AUTHOR WHO IS NO LONGER LIVING - Autobiography of a Yogi

25 POINT TASKS

---------------------------------------

I'm including the books that I am currently reading, as they will be read before the challenge ends. My total so far is... 90 points! Go Me! Awesome job to everyone taking part in this!
-----
Edit - Updated books read for the challenge :) Sorry!

message 364: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Just finished a 15 point task- up to 120 points!

message 365: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Nice Angela! :) I need to catch up!

message 366: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I know some people are including books that are children's books, which are quick and easy to read. I do not think that these should be included in the challenge. Does anyone else have any thoughts?
I do not want to step on any toes, just curious if anyone else feels that way too.

message 367: by Emma (last edited Oct 13, 2008 01:41PM) (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Hmmm.......I don't know. I think they should be included. Because I love YA and maybe I would want to read a book in the YA genre, so I could tackle my TBR shelf faster and still complete the challenge.

message 368: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I was not referring to YA, more like books you would read to a small child.

message 369: by Jen (last edited Oct 13, 2008 07:27PM) (new)

Jen (nekokitty) | 110 comments I personally almost didn't count the children's books that i put in, and it doesn't matter to me if they are counted or not. My reasoning for putting them in is:
-These books are some of my daughter's favorites and are read almost nightly to my daughter (and sometimes baby son)
-They are 5 point challenges... I would have never put them on a 10 or 15 point challenge.

:)
-Jenni

Edit - Took out any book under 100 pages from my challenge.

message 370: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia (pandoraphoebesmom) | 1826 comments I guess I expected people to read novels to fulfill the challenge requirements. But since I didn't specify in the beginning that children's books couldn't be used I'll accept them for this challenge...next go around (winter challenge etc.) I'll specify that novels should be read unless otherwise indicated in the task description.

message 371: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments My update:
25 points
Read a book and cook a meal inspired by it.
PAULA DEEN IT AIN'T ALL ABOUT THE COOKIN'
I cooked Uncle Bubba's Crab and Shrimp au Gratin.
It was soooo good!!!

I now have 170 points.

message 372: by Marsha (new)

Marsha I included a couple of questionable books. I also am not really competing against anyone but myself. I've decided to try to top my score every season. This is my first challenge, so I am just finding out where I am.

I did include the September Roses book. I didn't realize it was a children's book until it arrived. The synopsis just said it was about a 9/11 memorial. (Sweet story, BTW) I also included the Anna Quindlen book, which is very short. Again, it wasn't planned, I was just pleasantly surprised that she was a Pulitzer winner.

message 373: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (melitious) Well, holy cow! I just realized I read a book and cooked a meal inspired by it! Woohoo! Congressional Club Cookbook -- cooked their cocktail meatballs -- yum! As well as their Easy Crab Dip.

I also finished reading Love is a Mix Tape for 10 points -- so, that puts me at 145, if my calculations are correct!

message 374: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) READ A NOVEL OR NON-FICTION BOOK ABOUT WITCHES, VAMPIRES, OR WEREWOLVES : The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova 10 Pts

TOTAL: 235 Pts as @ 14/10

message 375: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments I'm at 115 now!

Just finished Interred With Their Bones by Jennifer Lee Carrell for the book by a Goodreads Author.

message 376: by Julianne (last edited Oct 14, 2008 10:13AM) (new)

Julianne | 314 comments Laura,

How was Interred with their Bones? I have it at home, but haven't put it in a particular place on my list. I thought it sounded intriguing, but then I also thought Lambs of London (another Shakespeare "mystery") sounded good and it was a dud for me.

I concur with Marsha. I'm not competing with anyone but myself-to see if I can actually meet my own goals. I'm adding one childrens' book (David Goes to School), but I'm not adding that to my points tally.

Like Jenni, I have a young child who insists I read 3-4 books to him per day, many of them the same books (all about Dr. Seuss length), so eventually I will have read the equivalent of a novel in childrens' books during the fall ;-)

If this competition is for an actual prize, I'd say just remove the kids books points if it seems to be a problem. Like Jenni said again I don't think people are using them for 25 point criteria, just the 5 pointers

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments Julianne - not Laura, but I enjoyed Interred with their Bones. I thought it was fun.

I also found Lambs of London "a dud."

message 378: by Ashley (new)

Ashley (angelashly) | 160 comments I am just starting this as I am new to the board
My Goal is 135

message 379: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 437 comments After reading The Martian Chronicles for my short stories, and Frankenstein for Frankenstein in the title, and When We Were Orphans for my Asian author, I now have a total of 215 points.

message 380: by Laura (new)

Laura | 56 comments Julianne and Susanna - I enjoyed Interred with their Bones as well. The story gets bogged down in conspiracy theories occasionally but overall its a good one.

message 381: by Liz M (new)

Liz M Laura, Re: post 353, I have made good mushroom-barley soups. The Ukrainian one did work out as well as hoped, but it may have been the "low-sodium" vegetable broth, that apparently was also low on taste.

Jeane & Joanie, RE: posts 365&366, A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian seems to be getting some attention as it s a fairly new book (I want to say it is the author's debut) with a catchy title. Personally, I wasn't overly impressed. I think the writing is fairly solid, but the mood of the book left me depressed & irritable, and it seemed to end too nicely given what had gone before. I gave it two stars.

message 382: by Liz (new)

Liz (lizvegas) this is liz (vegas) im at 75 now. i'll post my updated list soon

message 383: by Sarah (last edited Oct 14, 2008 09:13PM) (new)

message 385: by Katie (new)

Katie (pokatohead) | 4 comments Well I just came across this but thanks to goodreads I can see what I read in Sept/Oct so far. Not even knowing about the Challenge I already have 60 points! I will definitely pay attention to the list now and get more points. It sounds like fun!

message 386: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I have 140 point now.

message 387: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments Just finished The Bell Jar so I am up to 135 points.

message 388: by Sarah (last edited Oct 15, 2008 09:04PM) (new)

Sarah (goosers34) 25 points:

3: book and craft: Maida Heatter's Brand-new Book of Great Cookies (items made: creole pecan praline bars (oh my GOD), gingerful biscotti, chocolate covered cranberry cookies[my own recipe tweeked from one in the book:])

So I am totally counting this as a craft book because baking is as fine an art as quilting, knitting, paper-crafts, scrapbooking, etc. etc etc!!

total: 155 points

message 389: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I am in the middle of A Night of the Lonesome October and House of Leaves. That is 5 points for a title with October and 5 points for the word leaves in the title.

message 390: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (countessofblooms) | 1128 comments Finishing Living Dead in Dallas grabbed me 5 points and Love in the Time of Cholera netted me 15 more, which drives my total up to 175 points as of 10/16.

message 391: by Marsha (new)

Marsha Just finished A Thousand Splendid Suns by an author I've never read before for 15 points, bringing me to 85. I'm almost finished with Atonement too for the one word title.

My personal goal for the challenge is 100- but I'm thinking I'll end up somewhere around 120. So next challenge, I'll make my goal 125 or 130.
