Names have magic. Names in fantasy, which have to be made up or adapted from folklore or linguistics, can easily go wrong. Hell, even colours can go wrong. In Thailand white is not weddings but funerals, for instance; yellow is weddings. I got it wrong once in a TV commercial that cost $3m to shoot and had to do some very creative accounting in a hurry before the sharks (aka my partners) ate me -- I shoulda read my own book on the subject (COLOUR FOR PROFESSIONAL COMMUNCATORS) more carefully! Names carry much more freight than colours. These are just names I saw near each other on a list reporting the doings of my Goodread friends. I didn't go looking for them. I want to stress that I'm not picking on the authors; they merely happened to be to hand.

The Sending (The Obernewtyn Chronicles, #6) by Isobelle Carmody

Immortalis Carpe Noctem (Immortalis, #1) by Katie Salidas

Thoughts?

I've read the second one. Freebie from some website or other. Not read the first.

Can I rant a bit before I give a clear answer? :)

I don't like titles where the number of the book is in brackets. Give me the name. That is all I need.

The first one's naming of the chronicles leaves me tongue tied. The second one, not so much. These titles get longer and longer. Keep it simple.

Sjm | 162 comments I have passed on books because the titles were trying too hard.

Valerie Douglas (valeriedouglas) A cardinal rule of fantasy, someone once said, was never to make the names impossible to pronounce. I always thought it was because the reader will stop each time to try.

Christopher Bunn | 160 comments Myself, I enjoy fantasy titles that are somewhat complex and rich in intonation. A few come to mind.

The V'Sothrllyn'nnmgh Codex of Mlyrthrwyrn
Lord Allyionus of Glinickich Alhambra (#2)

Oh, and also:
Hruurhwarischen the Mostly Brave and His Band of Warischenerites

Just kidding. Keep it understandable. The Lord of the Rings.
