Rose | 109 comments I recently purchased the nook 3g/wifi. Then I saw the nookcolor and fell in love so decided to get that as well.

Which do you all have? Which do you prefer?
For those of you with the nookcolor, do your eyes tire after reading since it isn't e ink? How often do you have to charge it?

Bekah (bekah317) | 2750 comments I don't have the nook color..so not sure..but I love my nook wifi!

Shelly (shellye77) I just got mine last week. It's funny, because my husband is complaining that I'm still reading regular books! I have too many I bought before I got the nook! Mine is a nook color, and the brightness was a little something to get adjusted to at first, but I stare at a computer screen all day long, not too much different. I'm still getting use to it, I have thought about taking it back and getting the regular nook, but will probably stick with the nook color.

To control the brightness hit on the bottom of your screen. Not where you can go to shop or library, but above that where the actual writing is. You will see options such as Text. You can control text size and control whether you want normal, night or several other options for reading. There is also a brightness tab so you can control that as well!

It takes a little bit of practice, but it is definitely worth it. Also, the staff at B&N are really helpful if you have any questions. I have gone there a few times at different locations and they have never made me feel stupid for asking questions about how to use it!

I hope this helps and have fun with your Nook Color! I love mine!

message 5: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Thanks Fiona! I thought there was some way to control it!

message 6: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman You are very welcome!

message 7: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments ok, so my question is....do i need a nook color if I am plan to only read books on it?

message 8: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman No, you can read just fine on the regular nook if that's all you want to do. You have complete access to the Barnes and Noble library. It is a lot cheaper.

message 9: by Autumn (last edited Apr 22, 2011 06:42PM) (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments I have the nook color. I love it! I have very dry eyes, and very sensitive to the light. Just like Fiona said, you can adjust the brightness of the screen. mine is in the lowest shade of light, and so far i haven't had any problems !

message 10: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I will say it's taken me some time to get use to it. If I had it to do over again, I might have just stuck with the regular nook, which was my first choice. But I am growing addicted to seeing everything in color, just took me some time to get use to it. I stare at a computer screen all day, doing at home too was difficult, until I found the brightness control. That helped a lot.

The big differences for me, Pandora, internet access, and crossword, oh, and I can turn out the bedside lamp at bed time and read more, much to my husband's joy!

message 11: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Oh, and after owning an iphone, the touch screen was the other big factor for me. Little things can make or break your decision.

message 12: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments Well my bday is wednesday and my hubby is sick of my books so he he wants to get me a nook or kindle...think I'm leaning towrad the nook for some reason.

message 13: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I did hear the kindle is going to start allowing library loans at the end of the year, which is one of the reasons I bought the nook, to save money. All things to consider. . .

message 14: by Laura (new)

Laura (filoviridae) | 783 comments My husband just got me the first generation iPad and I have the apps downloaded for iBooks, Kindle, Nook, & Kobo. It's nice because each will have different things available (especially as freebies) and I'm not limited by one system. I also have the MO library e-reader on there so I can use my local library system to check-out books 24/7.

message 15: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I had thought about the iPad, for that very reason. I just wanted something dedicated to mostly reading, but I'm thinking if the price doesn't deter some, it's a great option, get everything!

message 16: by Rose (new)

Rose | 109 comments Well I got the 3G nook first because of the e ink and then about 2 weeks later gave up trying to be good and got the nookColor. I thought I'd just use them both because I was a bit afraid of my eyes getting tired after continuous reading on the nookcolor but that really hasn't been a problem at all. Truth be told, after I got the nookcolor, I forgot i even had the regular nook so I ended up just giving it away to my cousin so as not to feel like I wasted $200.

I love the nookcolor but I really hate the short battery life on it. I have to charge it every day or two. I think the regular nook is something like a 10 day charge and the kindle is much longer than that.

message 17: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments Ok so someone tell me if I can reading/seeing this right. I just went to B&N and looked at teh Nookbooks adn they are like 9.99???? IS THAT TO DOWNLOAD TO THE NOOK? I am I seeing this wrong? I thougt thye wee less expensive than regular books? Please clarify , as maybe I'm I'm just being blonde(which I am).

message 18: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments The more I look the more confused I get!

message 19: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I think it depends on the book, I've bought several that were $6.99

For me, I wanted versatility, not just an e-reader. I like to travel and with the iPad, I can have my books, travel guides, movies, and more all in one place. I'm pretty excited about being able to travel without a stack of books!

message 21: by Heidi (last edited Apr 26, 2011 08:33AM) (new)

Heidi | 871 comments I just want it for books...so I need to know what is best for that.

message 22: by Rose (new)

Rose | 109 comments yeah it definitely depends on the book. I thought ebooks would be a bit cheaper as well. Check out the "steals and Deals" section from the "shop mode" on your nook. I've gotten books that ranged from 99 cents to 12.99. You can also go directly to the B&N website, go to the Nook section and sort the books by their prices.

message 23: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments With my luck allt eh books I will want are the expensive ones. i don;t wanna get cheap ones just cause they're cheap ya know/ Is there any monthly charges with Nook? My hubby's cousin is trying to tell me that there are monthly fees with Nook and none with Kindle.

message 24: by Rose (new)

Rose | 109 comments No there aren't any monthly fees. You only pay for the books you buy.

message 25: by Rose (new)

Rose | 109 comments And yeah, I understand what you're saying about not getting cheap books just because they're cheap. More often than not, I end up paying 9.99-12.99 for the books I really want.

There is also a section on the B&N website for free nookbooks. I've only downloaded 1 of them because the selection is pretty crappy but I think they add more once in a while.

message 26: by Laura (last edited Apr 26, 2011 09:35AM) (new)

Laura (filoviridae) | 783 comments You might be able to use your Nook to check books out from your library system...you'd have to check to see if your local library is using that program, though.

message 27: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Yes, you can use your nook to check out library books, kindle will make this option available at the end of the year.

message 28: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments hhhhmmmm, i still dunno I should take a poll!

message 29: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments Heidi, there are some blogs that post book deals every day. they might not have the specific tittle im looking for, but they come up with really good books (fiction-non fiction)

Rose: Do you keep your WIFI on?? keep in mind this drains your battery a LOT faster. I only turn the wifi on when im browsing the net, or updating my library. It makes considerable difference.

Yeah, I do. I didn't realize how much it drains the battery but I can see a difference after 2 hours with the wifi off. Thanks!

Fiona Goodman Heidi wrote: "hhhhmmmm, i still dunno I should take a poll!"

One thing that is new for the Nook is that you can buy a car charger, so if you are going to be travelling around you can and then you can just plug it in.

One more thing about the Nook color versus the regular/kindle is the ease of night reading. The option under text allows that, and you can also control brightness so it won't bother anyone else. I have heard with the blk/white versions you have to have a clip on light which could be more disturbing and you can not control it.

Also I have gotten books for as low as .99 cents. My husband also downloaded a PDF version of Brave New World for free. (He works in computers, I don't know how to do that. I have found a lot of hardcovers for more than 1/2 off as well. I got the new Anne Rule book for like $12 and it has a hardcover sell price of $25. The only books I have paid full price for are the paperbacks (not all, but especially new releases) however I don't think I have paid sales tax, so that is a plus.

And last thing, on the NColor, the magazine quality rocks!

message 32: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments Ok, so here's is my situation, I don't travel, I don't read at night in bed, I read one magazine which I get in the mail every other month, I guess I just want something to eliminate the books on my shelves. to neaten things up, because I am crazy that way. So seriously, I guess it doens't matter which I get then right?

Glad it worked! :)

Heidi,in that would advise for you to get the Kindle. They are both good devices that have different benefits (IMO)

the Nook (the color): has the benefit of the backlight, touch screen, library rentals, different formats (PUB, PDF,)which make it easier to buy a book on the market without having to stay locked to one bookstore.

The Kindle: does not have the touch screen or the backlight. It also has the format (.mobit) which ties you down to buy books from amazon,(but there is a program that converts the formats as well).
on the good side Amazon has the best price on ebook selection as well as the best bargains and freebies. they recently launched the lending application as well as library rentals which was the big set back for kindle users.

those are the few aspects, that i have experimented from the devices. As you can see whats best for one person, might not be the best for another. Its a personal choice based on the individual needs.

I also check daily blogs where they have e-book bargains.

hope it helps :)

Heidi | 871 comments Autumn, thansk so much, I am seriously leaning toward the kindle now, whereas before it was the nook. My hubby did a bunch of researcha dn feels the kindle would be best for what I'm gonna do with it.

message 35: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments i think so too. Based on what you want a reader for, the Kindle would be a good option. (and now that they have lowered the price on them)

message 36: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 871 comments Well, guess what, My hubby came home from work with a present for me, and it was...lo and behold...A KINDLE! I am so excited...now that I have it! I have downloaded 3 books already and I haven't even had it for 2 hours! I also got roses!

message 37: by Laura (new)

Laura (filoviridae) | 783 comments Hoorah! That's awesome, Heidi!

message 38: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) Yay Heidi! That's so great!

message 39: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments thats Great Heidi!!! :) good on ur hubby!

message 40: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman Congratulations Heidi! It sounds like you have an awesome husband! Enjoy it!

message 41: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments For the nook users: have you guys installed the me software update? I just did...and was quite disappointed that almost all the good aps were priced some what expensive.especially when they are free on the iphone n android market. That's without saying the many glitches still to be fixed. I was excited about out tho.

message 42: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) I did download it, after a few glitches, got it working. I feel the same about the apps. Hopefully they will become cheaper.

message 43: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman I need to do mine but I keep forgetting! This has reminded me. Thanks for the remind and the heads up Autumn!

message 44: by Rose (new)

Rose | 109 comments I didn't even realize there was an update. Thanks!

message 45: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman Ok, how do I get into it? I am at a loss!

message 46: by Shelly (new)

Shelly (shellye77) It will eventually instruct you when you plug it in to your pc, so I've heard, or you can get it from B&N website.

message 47: by Fiona (new)

Fiona Goodman Now I just have to find my connection cable 'cause the website is not helping me at all!

message 48: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments Fiona, if you leave your nook idle with the wifi on, the update will be automatic. If you want to do out manually then click on the link that says "get it now" make sure you download the file in your desktop so it's easier to trsnfer.next, you plug in your nook and then trsnfer the download into the nook drive. (you can right click, and select "send to" you click on nook and the file should trsnfer to your device. Let it idle for about 4 min while installs,a little green light with the nook symbol should be in the lower left corner.that's your confirmation that it's being installed.click on it, and you can start browsing the apps.

message 49: by Rose (last edited May 02, 2011 04:49PM) (new)

Rose | 109 comments You're so awesome, Autumn. I couldn't figure it out, went to the store and they somehow couldn't do it even with the help of tech support. They ended up deleting the library off my nook along with all of my shelves and still no update. Just followed your directions and it's installing now.
Thanks :-)

message 50: by Autumn (new)

Autumn (sweetdenial) | 1625 comments ,ah that's great rose! I was a little concerned it want clear enough, because I typed it through my phone. I hope your library it's back on,i can't believe the tech guys did that!!

Let us know how you like the upgraded version.
