Brian Robbins First time of reading (& apologies to American Goodreaders) it took me half the book to get beyond the highly American style. I then enjoyed it very much.
Having finished it, it was one of the few books I have ever begun to re-read immediately. It's presentation of the Trinity & of forgiveness both gave me a great deal to think about. Loved the book & have since read it twice more.

Sarah Tun I think one of the great things about The Shack is that it does take readers beyond their usual perspective. God is not in a box and our minds constantly need renewing, rethinking, else we get 'too small'.

Sylvia I've read it several times. A friend and colleague recommended it to me. The first time I read it I was flabbergasted, because it shook my vision of God. After the youngest daughter of my best friend died tragically I re-read it twice and bought two copies of the Dutch translation of it. One copy I gave to my friend and her husband to help them cope with the terrible loss.
I also have a Mobipocket version on my Nokia smartphone which I have always with me.

Joe Yes, I have read it. I did not know what I was getting into when I first picked it up. I thought it was going to be more along the lines of "Lovely Bones" or "Her Fearful Symmetry".
What I found was a Trojan Horse. This is not the story of a man searching for his long lost daughter but the story of his search for God and the meaning of life (he was surprised as I was). Spoiler alert! Mac finds it at a shack!
I found this more of a young adult novel. Simple and annoying. It felt more like a weekend religious retreat with the Neelys than conversations with God.
I a glad many find pleasure and meaning in this book. Unfortunately I am not one of them.

You're right, Joe, it is a young adult novel. The author has written it for his children as far as I know.

Tam I've read this book last year and I liked the entire thrill of it at first. But in the long run it started to become quite dragging. I still finished the book, nonetheless. And the way God was portrayed as three very different people was very interesting indeed. So, basically it is inspiring but dragging.

Olivia Celeste wrote: "Hated this book. I haven't been this mad at a book's popularity since "The Bridges of Madison County" was on the best-sellers list."

Very dull - I thought it was lame.

No you are not alone. I thought it was lame, almost goofy.

I absolutely loved this book. I was raised a Christian but was struggling with the concept of God that I had developed as a child. This book really gave me a different perspective and strengthened my faith. I have lost family members and never really dealt with my grief until I read this book.

Sandra Bernsen Read the book a couple years ago and loved it. I agree with others' comments that it opens a persons mind regarding the concept about God and how he is present in our lives. A wonderful book! I highly recommend it!

Marietta I liked this book so much. I called it a "feel good" book and I think it's a book you want to pass along to someone.

message 162: by Kyoka (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kyoka I've read it, and I think it's a pretty interesting read. I liked it. It puts a twist on religion, mainly because we have set images in our head on how one is supposed to look and this book really debunks that. It showed me that their is no congregational walk to salvation. And everyone has to have their own personal relationship with GOD.

message 163: by Amy (new) - rated it 4 stars

Amy I loved this books ability to make me stretch my limited view of the characters. I laughed and cried. At first I was much like the character almost afraid I couldnt get past the darkness of the story. I was pleasantly suprised when the story took a turn so the father started to see light at the end of the tunnel. I think we have all at one time or another found ourselves in a dark situation that seems so dense that light is hidden from us. The author did a wonderful job of allowing us to experience this journey with the character.

Tammy Woodley I read the book and consider it a MUST read for everyone!!! I loved it. You don't have to be a very religious person to get and understand it. May you enjoy the book as much I did:) Perhaps read with tissues....I cried while reading it.

message 165: by Kay (new)

Kay I am a Christian. I wanted to "love" this book, as it seems most people did. I did not enjoy it at all. I found the authors' writing rather juvenile. The basic premise of this book could have been stated in one or two sentences. In my opinion, this book was so overrated. I was extremely disappointed. But, glad that it was meaningful to so many.

message 166: by S.L. (new) - rated it 5 stars

S.L. It was really good and not at all what I had expected. I have a funny story about this book.

I saw the cover one day and picked it up read the back then put it back. I just wasn't sure if i wanted to buy it. it was hardcover at the time. I loved the cover and sometimes I buy a book because i like the cover lol. Anyway a little while later i was walking around walmart and saw it again. picked it up read it and put it back. After that it was like i saw the book everywhere i went. NO JOKE. it was on the shelf at every place i went to and even on facebook advertisements would pop up on the side and i was like thats it i am getting this damn book.
I bought it read and have lent it out for to others to read. I'm not a religious person but i enjoyed the read regardless.
