I tried to read It when I was ten...got through the first chapter and couldn't pass a storm drain for months. I finished it eventually, though. About a year later I bought Firestarter from a farm town general store for $1; it's one of my favourites to this day!

Cell 3 years ago. I loved it even thought the ending is quite disappointing :) So far I read 16 novels of him.

IT. I was in 7th grade and couldn't put the book down. I was shaking under the covers with a flashlight reading this book til all hours of the night. To this day, still won't step upon a shower drain... or get to close to a storm drain.
The my first ever SK book was Night Shift, and I still havent been able to forget any of the stories I read back then. Was in 8th grade. Especially scary were Jerusalem's Lot, Children of the Corn, The Boogeyman, Strawberry Spring, Man Who Loved Flowers. I still go back down the memory lane and fondly recall the experience. However, the first novel I read from him was The Salem's Lot. Which is still one of my favorite King books.
I probably already answered this already, sorry if I did, but mine was Christine. I saw the movie when it came out in theaters, then I went out and bought it. I was a sophemore in HS, when the movie came out. I was totally hooked after I read the book. Been reeding him ever since.
For some strange reason, The Shining (Paperback edition with the cover illustration matching the Kubrick movie poster) was one of many books sitting on the shelf of my 7th grade English teacher's miniature library bookshelf behind her desk, available for all her students to loan. For no reason I can remember, I took that book and read it voraciously and havent stopped reading King since. If it wasnt my 7th grade teacher, some other guiding force would have steered me towards King, no doubt in my mind
Firestarter was my first foray into the KING-dom. I was in junior high school and my parents had a few of his books. I followed that with the original, abridged version of The Stand (which I re-read in the unabridged format a decade later when it was released) and have been a fan ever since. I love post-apocalyptic novels. Maybe that's because the first one I read is the all-time best ever (that being said, I have to give props to Robert McCammon for Swan Song, which is such a close second that the gap between them is infinitesimal.)
The very first book I read was The Green Mile and the first ever Horror novel I read by SK was Pet Sematary which I loved :)
The first S.K. novel I read was Pet Sematary. I have two cats, and some might think it would make me dislike it, but it made me appreciate it even more.

This completely caught me off guard b..."Haha, that's awesome. I am new King reader. Only started in November and on my 6th book. Every time I go to pay for a King book at my local bookstore, this one particular guy starts talking to me about how great King's books are, and "You'll love this." or "Have you read ______? You should." or "This scared the crap out of me." It always makes me more enthusiastic about reading King. :)
This is a great thread\question and I'm still trying to remember,I think it's a toss up between Salems lot and Pet Sematary. I was 12 or 13, I remember that.
Maria wrote: "i might have answered this and completely forgotten about it.... But my first was bag of bones"Oh, really, Maria? That's interesting!

Yes it was my first. Found it In an antique bookstore For 5$. Why is it interesting?
My first book was Pet Sematary, I was in elementary school and I enjoy it so much i became addicted to SK books. :D
John- I ended up reading Apt Pupil and Shawshank as my first stories in high school. I was truly turned into his constant reader after purchasing Under the Dome. I haven't been a fan for long, but I truly do love his work entirely. I have a lot of catching up to do, but Under the Dome had my jaw dropped for a majority of those thousand pages.
My first King book was 'The Shining'. I read it when I was about 13, and it made me scared of bathtubs at night for a very long time!
Firestarter - when I was 11. I remember being fascinated by the story, and it probably hooked me on Stephen King for life.
Salem's Lot when I took an English class in Horror in college. One of the Best vampire stories ever.
I /think/ it was Carrie. Thought I'm not sure at all, because I started devouring his work as soon as I finished that first one. Whichever it was, I was in middle school (6th or 7th grade) and found it in the library. My parents were happy for a number of years afterward, they knew Exactly what to get me for Christmas...SK books!
Mine was Cujo. I believe I read it sometime in the mid-80's. But I did not start a career of reading everything by King that I could find until I read The Dark Half, probably around 1994. After that one, it was off to the races!
I have a copy of the Dark Half sitting on my shelf, someone gave it to me as a gift, but I haven't read it yet.
I read Carrie, I 'borrowed' it from my Dad. I think I was about 9 years old and remember being unable to put it down as well as being shocked by it. I still have that paperback in my collection. That was the one that hooked me.
Just saw on Facebook AMC channel, or American Movie Classics, is having a Stephen King week. This week, every night, they will be playing a different Stephen King film adaptation. I don't know much more about it than what I just wrote, so if you're interested, you might check out AMC's website or your local listings.

And wasn't it just hilarious to see Stephen King do a cameo as the priest at the funeral? lol.

My first book was It. My sister had bought it and just left it on the shelf so I decided to start reading it. Been a big fan ever since.
Salem's Lot. My younger brother read it next and despite the fact that he was fourteen he slept with his light on for a few weeks.
Adam wrote: "My first book was It. My sister had bought it and just left it on the shelf so I decided to start reading it. Been a big fan ever since."I finally read It at the end of last year. Incredible book and I've been told that The Stand is just as good.
