What was your first Stephen King book?
The Stand was my intro to Stephen King and was completely blown away. Previously I always just assumed that he only wrote horror books, which is a genre that I am not particularly fond of, but boy was I wrong.
My first was Dolores Claiborne, when I was in eighth grade. It was the first book I ever finished. Not counting, of course, the Step-Into-Reading books from my early childhood.
Carrie was my first King book. It was kind of funny because I was like 8 or 9 and my mom had already forbidden me from reading/watching horror...but when I was in the hospital getting my tonsils out she picked out this book for me to read because of the girl on the cover. She had no idea who Stephen King was...lol.
So Carrie was the first adult book I ever read, when I was 7. When I finished reading this, I thought, "I can do this! I can do BETTER than this." I've been writing stories and novels ever since, proving myself right, and wrong, at less than even intervals. The phrase "a crow among swans" has stayed with me, for some reason. Now-famous story of how his wife saved this from the trash and made him finish it, thereby leading eventually to the $400,000 advance from Doubleday, is perhaps better than the novel itself. Made me realize that I've always needed a woman in my life to support my writing the same way--and to welcome the task of sifting through my own garbage. Made "dirtypillows" a common word in my vocabulary. Oh, and--good read.
My first Stephen King book was Lisey's Story. It was great! Then, Thinner, and Firestarter. Now, I've read about half of his books and just can't get enough. I've tried other authors but just have trouble with them because their writing isn't as good.
My first Stephen king book was It, and then i Read many of Stephen king's work and became one of the devoted fans.
My first Stephen King book was The Dead Zone and I was hooked. My favorite Stephen King book so far is The Tommyknockers.
Becky wrote: ""The Shining", and then "The Stand" immediately after. I think that I read these at either 8 or 9, maybe 10... My parents weren't really into the whole "book censorship" thing, so they never to..."
I beat-up my copy of The Stand too. Read it sooo many times. I don't think it was my first SK, but one of the first. I've read and reread his books so often I just can't remember!
Finished The Passage a bit ago, and it reminded me of The Stand.
My very first Stephen King novel was "The Shining" and boy, I got a very scary nightmare the night after I read the part when Jack Torrence hallucinated about the hedges. The book really scared the hell out me!
My first King book was The Gunslinger. A really good friend gave it to me. When i finished i ask where was the next one, he thought it was funny because he knew the next one wasn't out yet, i had no clue. But it got me started on the adventure of a life time with King.
My first Stephen King book was "The Dreamcatcher", 2 years ago. It was my brother's and I started it just out of curiosity. It scared me a lot, but I couldn't stop reading it!
"My first SK book was On Writing, but my first novel was The Stand and I enjoyed it, although I was slightly disappointed in the ending." - Kelly Jo, I felt the same way about The Stand - I found it such an incredible book, and its one of my favourites, but the ending didn't seem 100% right - maybe bcos the good guys had to die. But that "God is cruel" thing came up strong and clear in Desperation. Stand is still in my top 5 of SK's novels :)
My first SK book was "Carrie" which I read in 1976. I've read just about everything he's written since. Hats off to anyone who read and finished "Pet Sematary". . .for reasons beyond me. . .the book freaks me out so bad. I've started it at least 3 times and never get past the first few chapters.
My first book was Salem's Lot which I think was a great book to start with. I think I was about 12, which was probably a little young for SK, but i remember that I read it when we had a really bad snow storm and school was cancelled. I've been hooked ever since!
First book was The Stand. A co-worker lent me a well read, beat up paperback copy back around 1993 and Ive read him since, currently working on Under The Dome.
The first book I read was "The girl who loved Tom Gordon".. I think I was about 15, and after that I just couldn't put King down.. His were the only books I read after that!
the stand was my first that i started(still working on it) but the gunslinger was my first start to finish
I think the first one I read was Cujo, but I can't swear to it. He has so many I can't keep track of them all.
The Green Mile followed by Different Seasons. Read them because I watched The Green Mile, Stand By Me and Shawshank Redemption for the first time all in one week and loved them all. Then I found out they were all based on books by Stephen King. Stephen King got me into reading as an adult.
My first was Misery. It was just a few years ago, and I not only became a Stephen King fan (though I still have a lot to catch up on), but a fan of reading in general.
My first ever Stephen King book was Pet Sematary and from there on i was glued.
My first was Cujo when I was in 3rd grade. My mom used to read SK when I was a kid, but the only ones she owned were Different Seasons, Tommyknockers, and Pet Semetary. Well, the cover of Pet Semetary scared me, so I wouldn't read that one, and I tried Tommyknockers, but couldn't get past page 5, so I wanted to try one on my own. We were about to leave to drive to Tennessee from Ohio, so we stopped at the store to get me reading material, and I picked Cujo, b/c it was about a dog. Finished it in 2 days, and yea a few of the parts I had no understanding of (like Donna's affair and etc) but I remember being afraid of what was in Tad's closet. So the next time we went to the store, I got Eyes of the Dragon, b/c it was about princes and castles lol. Loved it! Sadly my next pick was Christine, and try as I might, I never could get into it despite a few attempts. Maybe I'll try again though... the last time I tried Christine was at least 10 yrs ago... maybe it'll go easier now.
Salem's Lot and I was in 4th grade. Yeah, probably much too young for it, but I was an avid reader and had stormed through the "youth" material. Loved the book, Stephen King and vampires ever since.
Mine was The Dead Zone. I read when I was around 13, although it wasn't my first adult book. I was completely hooked on King since.
Eyes of the dragon! I was very little, and it sounded like a fun and safe adventure. After that I found Christine, which my mother had bought thinking that it was a romance story. (and it sort of is...)
Adriana, obviously your mom is not a person who judges a book by its cover. :)When I first started reading King books, he hadn't written very many...I think it was Carrie or The Shining.
Dung Beetle wrote: "Adriana, obviously your mom is not a person who judges a book by its cover. :)"When asked, my mom says that the car in the cover didn't look that threatening. :)
My first book was 'Salem's Lot. I remember bringing the book to the counter at the bookstore and having the clerk say, "Best damn vampire book ever written." This completely caught me off guard because I had never heard a clerk at any store swear before (I was pretty young), and it made me think this book was going to be really good because it had made it so the clerk couldn't contain himself while talking about it. It was good and I've been a Stephen King fan ever since -- pretty much read everything he had published up to that point over the new couple of months.
My first King book was "The Eyes of the Dragon". I was 12 and bought it at a library sale. With my own allowance money! (it was a BIG DEAL! lol)Years later I loaned that tattered paperback out to someone and never got it back. I'm still heartbroken, but I learned my lesson.
It's my favorite book, mostly due to sentimental reasons but I do love that fairy tale and it's ties to DT.
My first King book was really one of his short stories: the mist, which i read in a few days in the winter of last year(when i was a freshman in highschool). I had gotten it for Christmas. The next book was IT and I lived it. It had so much depth, great characterization, and it was just overall awesome. Later in the summer of 2011 (this past summer) I read the shining, which was good but dragged in parts, and carrie, which is one of my favorites. I also read On writing, which was good as well. Since then I have gotten several more king books, but I havent read them because of school and whatnot. But for Christmas I am hoping to get 11/22/63. King is one of my all time favorite writer and one of my inspirations.
The first Stephen King book I read was The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon, and many many King books later it is still one of my favorites!
The Gunslinger. I don't think I really understood what I was reading then, but I enjoyed it and I've read it many times since.
