M.K. Cathcart (mkcathcart) | 2 comments I started reading the Dark Tower series and it wasn't until after the first 4 books I picked up something different, Misery and have loved everything I have read since. I'm not sure if he has wrote a 'bad' book yet but I'm yet to find it if he has!

"The Shining" and "Night Shift" are still favorites.

Kelle Campbell | 14 comments My first Stephen King story was "Fire Starter." I was about 15 and after reading just a few pages in, I was hooked! When I got "The Talisman," I even skipped a class to keep reading through a specially good part. That was the only time I ever played hooky!

That's great, Kelle. I'll bet Mr. King, even though he was a teacher, would be very flattered.

I agree with E. King's reading of Bag of Bones is really good. It also has an interesting interview at the end (at least the CD version I listened to) where he talks about audiobooks and how he used to pay his kids to record narrations for him so he could listen while driving.

Y'know, I never thought of that. A former teacher inspired me to play hooky! :)

Sounds like a proper introduction to the King, Michelle.

message 1031: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (eeeluminate) | 7 comments The first King book I read was The Stand. I read that book on summer vacation one year while overseas, finished it in a week and then reread it so many times that poor paperback looked like it had been mangled by a lawnmower. I never looked back.

Was it the unabridged version? It's the one I read (just once), and I always wonder what had been cut out for the first release.

message 1033: by Elaine (new)

Elaine (eeeluminate) | 7 comments It was! The edited version is missing some of the details about Trashcan Man's back story as well as a lot of the background character stories (I believe, I only made it half way through and decided I liked the longer version better.)

message 1034: by Paul (new)

Paul My first Stephen King book was my mum's copy of 'Skeleton Crew' back in 1985 (she'd just finished it so I nabbed it from her dresser).
'The Mist' blew my ten-year-old mind and I was hooked from that point onwards.

Thinking about it, my niece is nine and as much of a bookworm as I was at that age... I may have to slip her a copy of 'Skeleton Crew' next year and see how much trouble I get into with her parents! ;-)

I'll make the most of it while it lasts! She'll be a teenager before I know it and won't want to know me at all! I can already picture her saying "GOD! You're SO EMBARRASSING!"

Fay (fayse) | 5 comments I read The Dead Zone first as a 15 year old. Trying desperately to get my kids into his books...

message 1043: by Victoria (new)

Victoria DeBene | 12 comments Carrie.....and havent stopped since then!

message 1044: by Hilary (new)

Hilary | 2 comments MISERY. I was laughing (that cockadoodie Annie Wilkes) and horrified (oh poor, poor Paul Sheldon...) and in love (with King's masterful writing) all at the same time. :)

message 1045: by Tek (new)

Tek | 97 comments The Stand....wait...strike that...the first one I attempted to read was Desperation. This was right after it was released. I was a teen and my aunt recommended it, thought id like it. I wasn't into books at the time though so i only got a few dozen pages before giving up. Then years later I saw the tv movie for the Stand. Realizing that the story itself was interesting despite the "tv movie" level of effects and acting...i picked up the Stand novel to try and read for pleasure, something i hadn't done since Goosebumps. To make it better I picked up the Long & Uncut version. Lol. I trudged through it slowly but developed a liking toward the way King developed his characters and story. So I started picking off King books after that one at a time. I've read over 40 of his works by now.

message 1048: by George (new)

George Huxley | 7 comments I tried starting IT when I was in like 5th grade and got through about 300 pages before I gave up. But years later I read The Shining and got totally hooked and haven't stopped reading since. So I guess the answer, after my big ol' tangent, is The Shining.

11/22/63 is a great novel. Probably one of his best in recent years.
