Beatrix I heard mixed reviews about it. What are you inputs? It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if I'll get into it.
Recommend, or not?

I loved it. My husband and I listened to the three books together on a trip in the Northwest. We were gone for 15 days and listened to the books. Loved it. Not sure if I would have enjoyed it as much read though. Listening was awesome.

Loryn amazing series!

Louise Taylor hmmm, i think it's a love it or hate it situation. i read this one and hated it. it was truly painful for me to finish, and i only did so because i kept thinking it would get better. i found the characters completely uninteresting and distasteful (but not in a good way). i had the same reaction to the movie, and i tried watching it twice. dunno, i just found it flat...

Amanda It depends. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone under the age of eighteen. It's got a disaster of a financial case to sort through, some rather foul language, some highly foul behaviour, a few characters you want to kill just because of their actions and life choices, and that doesn't even deal with the final ugly mess at the end. However, vindication is best served with coffee. (And apparently in Sweden it's rude NOT to discuss things over coffee!) If you do take the plunge, it's not an easy ride, but take it in no less than 90 minute chunks. You'll need the longer reading sessions for the continuity of plot in your mind, as at times there are three different plots twisting together. Over all, I'm glad I read it and will be passing it to a friend down the street. Take a chance and hold your judgment until you meet the second court appointed trustee for Lisbeth. :)

Eric Definitely a mature audiences only serious but hot damn these books were amazing, highly recommended.

Sire note, you may want to consider borrowing your copy cause if you really like the serious you'll love the "4th" book they've included that has previously unpublished collection of essays and correspondence with Stieg Larsson

Rika I'm under 18 and I read it and it was definitely shocking. It's a very hard book to read. You have to make yourself read it, rather than want to read it. I think alot of the time people just buy into the hype of the book and become biased towards it. I think you should read just to know what it's about.

Beatrix Ah, okay. I'll give it a shot then. I'm always looking for good books to read, and this sounds pretty good from what I've heard from you guys and your ratings, so I'll go for it.
Thanks! (:

Anne I think people are apt to put it down before they get into it as the beginning is very boring. I say stick with it, as I think it is a good read. The second in the trilogy 'Girl Who Played With Fire' is easier at the beginning, and it also a very gripping read.

Joseph Longo I found it hard to get through. Too much unnecessary desciption. Both the beginning and the end are too long. In this case, the movie is better than the book. All the uncessary parts were removed. Tight screenplay. Good movie. Too long of a book.

Rika Joseph wrote: "I found it hard to get through. Too much unnecessary desciption. Both the beginning and the end are too long. In this case, the movie is better than the book. All the uncessary parts were removed. ..."
I agree especially in the second book the whole first part of it was so pointless really to the rest of the story I just didn't understand why he put it in there. What did the Caribbean and the death that occurred there have anything to do with murder of the two journalists and the sex trade? jack.

Charles not worth reading. i forced myself through it, slowly, just to prove i could still read tripe. it was tripe, be assured of it. it's 150 pages too long, it includes a brutal rape scene which serves as nothing but a brutal rape scene to fill pages, as does most of the sex in the book, of which there is too much.

the character and the reader are figuring things out at different speeds, generally with the reader getting it first. this leads to a lot of wasted words when the characters figure it out.

message 13: by Rika (new) - rated it 3 stars

Rika Even though he adds much more than he should could it be a translatory issue

message 14: by Ipm (new) - rated it 4 stars

Ipm Its a little uphill at the beginning, but once you start you just cant stop. Some strong topics for underage ppl and too much info sometimes; but all in all good book; really liked it.

message 15: by Leslie (new) - added it

Leslie Yes ypu should read it! I read it on my kindle and it was absolutely amazing. It did get a little slow in the middle but you have to stick to it and finish it beacuse the second one is really good too :)

message 16: by Joe (new) - rated it 4 stars

Joe I agree with a lot of these comments, when I started this book the financial aspect of it was off putting but when it got into the mystery that the story it was built around it was hard to put down. The shear fact that Stieg was able to conjure up such a thick plot is mezmerizing and its a fantastic novel.

Ya I toatally agree :)

Michelle Louise wrote: "hmmm, i think it's a love it or hate it situation. i read this one and hated it. it was truly painful for me to finish, and i only did so because i kept thinking it would get better. i found the..."

EXACTLY! I'm starting to believe EVERYONE picks this book up because it's said to be so good but I didn't find it to be so outstanding. It was hyped up too much. the second half of the book was ok only in comparison to the first half ! The only way I would go on to the next two books would be if I got a FREE audio version!

message 19: by Pam (new) - rated it 4 stars

Pam Williams I'm one of those people who LOVED this book (all three!) I actully liked the second and third books even better than the first. I am such a junkie I have seen the movies twice.

The first book is hard to get into and the subject matter is not for everyone but I got sucked into them after the first 150 pages and then could not put them down.

Michelle @Pam . Good to know, thanks! I know three people who said the same thing about the other two books. If amazon lowers the price for kindle addition Maybe i will consider getting them. Better yet, the library offers free ebooks and e audio books too. ( I thought that was so terrific)

message 21: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee i loved the audiobook narrated by Simon Vance...well worth it if your library has it (I know mine had a huge wait list for both the ebook and the audiobook) - I ended up getting them with my credits off audible, because I have no doubt i'll re-listed in the future

Beatrix Wow. So it's a love/hate relationship with this book.
I guess I'll have to see which one I'd be. I was thinking about buying it, but I don't wanna buy it and not like it.

Charles If you like for a book to help you escape reality and put you somewhere you would probably never go yourself, this is a good one. I loved it.

Katherine You should read the whole series. The books get better as you go along.

Desirae I thought that this was one of the best books/series I have ever read. The writing is brilliant, the story is exciting. I began listening to the first on Audible, and than bought the book, and read it as well. The series is so exciting, I didn't sleep for weeks. The characters will grab you, and leave you feeling as though you really know them, and what they are going to do. Read them, in order, than watch the swedish version of the films. ENJOY

Beatrix They're films too? Cool. :D
I know what it feels like to live in the fictional world of the book, and I love it. If it's as good as the people says its good says, then I'll gladly read this book.
I'll add it to my "to-read" and "priority-reads" shelf. :D

message 27: by Kim (new) - rated it 5 stars

Kim Yes, Definitely. I really enjoyed it. It does have a lot of shocking violence however, the characters are very real and the writing is so good. While I am reading I explore pictures of the setting and this book creates images and emotions that are spot on. It's difficult because the first 10% of the book makes you want to throw it aside but if you get through that the story becomes much much more exciting.

Carol Definitely read the book. The main character, Lisbeth, is unique, allow her to draw you into the book. Previous message by Kim is well stated. The violence in the book can be upsetting.

Beatrix I might just buy it, then. It sounds like it'll be a good read on long airplane rides. :D

Manugw One important feature is that you will get familiar with exotic Sweden and at the same time learn that Sweden is not the utopia we tend to think but a country that faces the same problems better known countries do

Irene if you like surfing or edgy sports than this book is for you. Lisbeth is on the edge. Recently I have found every TV, movie and book female is trying to swim in her wake.
it is for a mature reader, who is liberal and accepting of others.

Charles Irene wrote: "if you like surfing or edgy sports than this book is for you. Lisbeth is on the edge. Recently I have found every TV, movie and book female is trying to swim in her wake.

no, what you're seeing is stereotypical female "strength" archetypes. you're hyper aware of them right now, because you just read a book fronted by one. pay attention to the other characters, and even salander. they're stereotypical too.

the business partner, who is one of the best in the business, sleeps with her boss (the narrator), but is still strong and respectable.

the boozing middle aged sexpot, sleeps with narrator

the borderline autistic punk rock computer hacker, who's (true to form) the best at what she does. shes tough as nails, and doesnt need anyone, yet she still sleeps with the narrator. doing this does not make you see her as weaker, even though it shows huge weaknesses in her character.

the serial killer (at this point you should see it coming) he's the best at what he does. he wants to sleep with the narrator, and kill him.

theres a layout manager/photographer somewhere, who is *eye roll* the best in the world, gayer than springtime, and probably has the hots for the narrator. why not? everyone else gets him naked.

Beatrix I think, when I read this book, it'll be the type of book I wouldn't quite know how to rate. There seems to be plenty of ups and downs to it, and I have no idea how to take it, really. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Michelle I'm curious to know what u will think now. So be sure to tell us ok?

Beatrix I will! I'll post when I'm done reading. I should have a review written. (:
...My review/rants/raves. Haha.

Melissa Trixie wrote: "I heard mixed reviews about it. What are you inputs? It sounds interesting, but I'm not sure if I'll get into it.

IF YOU CAN HANDLE SADISTIC SITUATION and you can read frustraded lives, go ahead. At first i start loving the book until the ugly part came. I kept reading because im the type of person that needs to finish the book even i like it or not. The problem is that is a trilogy and the first one doesnt not even concludes! yeah is mandatory to read the second part... i started reading the second part almost crying... but then i couldnt! i had to stop it was too much for me. Is a book well written but is just not my type of subject.

message 37: by Paul (new)

Paul Scott Ignore all the negative stuff on here. It's a great book and so are the other two. I thoroughly enjoyed them, and yes, they do have adult content, but I'm an adult and didn't mind it at all. My only complaint was the obsession with room sizes. Don't be put off reading it. Go for it. Life is too short to ignore any good book.

Beatrix Mhmm! I like the way you said that. :D
I plan to read it over the summer, when I have time to begin reading books. This one'll be on top of my to read list, then. Thank you!

Amanda Trixie wrote: "Wow. So it's a love/hate relationship with this book.

Well, one good place to think about when you buy a book is Amazon used. You can find books that are like new for just a fraction of the cover price. That way, even if you end up not liking it, you didn't invest much in it. Plus, you can turn around and resell it! They give you a credit if you sell your book back. Not much, but a little. Sometimes I get my books from the library, sometimes I buy them. Sometimes I buy them "like new" and then donate them to the library. Either way, everyone wins. :)

Michelle Why should she ignore all the bad reviews?! I thight All reviews ,good and bad were there for a reason, to make her own conclusion?

Charles Paul wrote: "life is too short to ignore a good book."
this is true, so go read one.
life is too short to waste on over rated badly written garbage like this.

Beatrix Michelle wrote: "Why should she ignore all the bad reviews?! I thight All reviews ,good and bad were there for a reason, to make her own conclusion?"

I'm reading everyone's posts, it's ok. And I'm taking everything people are saying into consideration. Usually, when I read a book, I read at least 50% of it to get the feel of it and whatnot. I don't think it's fair if I judge a book when I haven't read a majority of it. And seeing as how everyone either loved it a lot of hated it, I'm taking it'll be the same for me. I'm glad that I'm getting all these opinions off of it. :D

Rachael I enjoyed the story just has a stand alone. I did not care for some of the abuse...?that came into the plot but overall enjoyed the story. For me, I got hooked on most of the characters and I enjoyed the mystery that is introduced at the start of the story.
I skimmed most of the second and listened to the third on CD. I thought they were interesting but still only really liked the first. But I think Lisbeth is a amazing female character. She pulled me through all three just to find out what happened with her story....
Here is another author from the same area of the world??Jo NesbøI have just heard about him and read some rave reviews...thought I would give him a try. :) Enjoy

Lorrie READ the book! It's wonderful!

Melissa Michelle wrote: "Why should she ignore all the bad reviews?! I thight All reviews ,good and bad were there for a reason, to make her own conclusion?" True that. An remember people, not everyone has the same taste in books. I just dont have the stomach for these kind of thing. They can be real but it doesnt mean i have to deal with it on purpose, if i can avoid them, bet that i will.

message 47: by Dee (new) - rated it 5 stars

Dee i haven't read Jo Nesbo but heard good things - also check out Henning Mankell, Karin Fossum, James Thompson

Ann I really enjoyed this first book. Some of it quite horrific, but a very easy read.

Kate I really enjoyed this book. An now reading Vol 2.

Beatrix I was surfing through the library shelves and I saw the other two books. I searched for the first one in vain. It wasn't there. D:
I think I'll just buy it. xD
