The books are part of a trilogy and the title of the trilogy is something along the lines of "Grandfather Tree", but that's not the exact title because I've looked for it. The boys name is Alex and he travels to many parallel universes. There is also his parallel-universe equivalent who is a girl and I believe her name is Lexi. The book begins with Alex's mom dying in a train wreck. I read this a few years ago and I believe they were fairly new.

This sounds sort of like the Withern Rise series, but the main character is Alaric. His mom dies in a train wreck and then he can travel to another universe through a tree. Here's the link to the first one: A Crack in the Line

A bit silly. I was looking for the same book from the beginning from may i think. I waited and searched, made my own post. And what now? Today someone tells me the name of the book and today i find this post...where someone has been looking for the same book not so long ago... :D
