An Empire of Schools: Japan's Universities and the Molding of a National Power Elite -- Robert L. Cutts
COBRA II: the Inside Story of the Invasion and Occupation of Iraq - Michael R. Gordon and Bernard E. Trainor
Close to Shore: The Terrifying Shark Attacks of 1916 - Michael Capuzzo(a great story about the real life inspiration for Peter Benchley's Jaws)
The Roads That Built America: The Incredible Story of the U. S. Interstate System - Dan McNichol(Not sure on Quint. Capuzzo's book was mainly about the shark attacks themselves. There isn't anybody quite like Quint in this book, as Quint main back story was his experience as a survivor of the USS Indianapolis torpedoing in the closing days of WWII, and that obviously hadn't occurred yet in 1916).
The Road Less Traveled: A New Psychology of Love, Traditional Values, and Spiritual Growth -by M. Scott Peck (What can I say, it's the first thing that popped into my head :-) And "obvious" and "less traveled" are not necessarily mutually exclusive.
