We are only going to have one thread each week and you will need to respond to all three prompts on this one thread (instead of three). Let’s give it a try. Let me know if you like or dislike this way.

WEEKLY DISCUSSION

This weeks prompt: A lot of public schools are going to school uniforms. What do you feel about school uniforms? Would they be good or bad and why? How would it change SSRHS?

At least four sentences.

message 2: by Kyle (new)

Kyle | 12 comments I am currently reading The Red Pyramid, the main character is Carter and his sister Sadie, Carter grew up with his father who did research on magic and his sister lived with her grandparents.

-----

I chose 33 Days: Touring In A Van. Sleeping On Floors. Chasing A Dream.

-----

I dont like school uniforms, i think they are a bad idea, The way we dress is our personaility, the school shouldnt take that way from us to express who we really are. it would change SRRHS because we all would look a like and no one here would like it very much because we cant choose what we wear anymore.

message 3: by Chase (new)

Chase Brudwick | 14 comments I am currently reading Faces of Fear. Abigail, one of the main characters, is moving into a new home with her mother and new step father. Her step father is the top plastic surgeon in the nation and she contemplates whether she wants to get work done to fit in with the girls in Bel Air. Abigail has just recently met her dad's boyfriend and he did her makeup for her mothers wedding.

-----

I've chosen Rhinehoth.

----

I don't like school uniforms because I think uniforms take away students ability to be creative and unique. Students use clothing to define who they are and what they're interested in. It would change SRRHS drastically in ways that I wouldn't like to find out. I imagine kids would find different ways to rebel or express themselves if they can't do it through their clothing.

message 4: by Tiffany (new)

Tiffany L | 13 comments I am currently reading Waiting for You. Marisa is now dating the guy she has wanted to for a while. Her family life is now starting to crash because her mom cheated on her dad, now he has moved out. Also she is becoming good friends with Nash her neighbor again.

I have chosen What Happen to Goodbye

I don't like the idea of uniforms because then students will look more alike and won't be able to express themselves. Uniforms will make students to use different ways to stand out and to make themselves different from everyone else around them.

message 5: by Jacob (new)

Jacob S | 11 comments Still reading the Gunslinger. However, things are wrapping up pretty quickly as he has finally met the Man in Black. Except the Gunslinger, Roland, wants answers before he thinks of killing the Main in Black.
__________________________________________________

I chose Bumped, which was a mistake in hindsight considering I hardly looked at the description. Then again, all the other books seemed boring as far as plot went.
__________________________________________________
Uniforms do more harm than good. It causes people to speak out more in a negative fashion because they can't do so in a silent manner. On top of that, kids are much more agitative while in uniforms because of their strong disagreement with the uniformity of thinking and/or lack of individualism.

message 6: by Josh (new)

Josh M | 9 comments I am reading Journey to the Center of the Earth, its main characters are Henry, his uncle Professor Hardwigg, and their guide Hans as they try and make it to the center of the earth
I chose "The Wreckage"
Uniforms wouldn't do much good at SRRHS.Most people wouldn't follow them anyways. And it would only make kids act worse. If you have trouble making kids follow a dress code now it would be even worse getting them to wear a uniform.

message 7: by Jack (new)

Jack Anderson | 14 comments I am reading Angels and Demons. Its main character is Robert Langdon who is a symbologist from Massachusetts. He is a very brilliant man who will help solve the mystery in the book

----

I chose "The Wreckage"

----

If the school were to switch to uniforms, I don't think it would end up well. If the school was just now starting to go to uniforms, most people wouldn't wear them. Nobody would want to wear them and the kids would act out even worse then they are now. So I don't think uniforms are a good idea.

message 8: by Brady (new)

Brady Grundhoefer | 10 comments I am reading "The True Adventures of Charley Darwin." This story is about Charles Darwin's life before his voyagee on the HMS Beagle. He is currently 12 years old in the book and hating his life at Shrewsberry School, a boarding school in his home town. In his free time, Darwin searches for specimens to add to his collection or does chemistry experiments with his brother.

I chose "The Wreckage."

I feel that SRRHS would never go to school uniforms because the students already got a taste of freedom, so to speak. Personally, I don't like the idea of scool uniforms because I like the freedom of wearing whatever you want.

message 9: by Erik (new)

Erik | 14 comments I just finished reading "Where The Red Fern Grows" by Wilson Rawls. The main character is a young boy named Billy, who is about 12 years old. He lives in the Ozark Mountains in Okalahoma. Billy is a toungh young man and saved fifty dollars for two straight years for two coon dogs.

I choose "Drown" for my book.

I think uniforms are dumb because every body would have to dress the same way. I think they would be a terrible idea because you would have to buy them and everyone would just change into different clothes after school anyways. It would change SRRHS by making the school seem stricter and more boring.

message 10: by Channing (new)

Channing Braun | 11 comments Weekly Update:
I just started reading The Little Lady Agency by Hester Browne so far it is really good. Melissa and her other personality Honey is the main character. Melissa was just fired from her job. As honey she starts to work for an escort service that ends bad. Then she starts her own agency, The Little Lady Agency.

Weekly Activity:
I chose When God Was a Rabbit by Sarah Winman

Weekly Discussion:
I think uniforms are a bad idea. I feel like if I have to sit here for 6 hours a day I should be able to wear what I feel comfortable in. I think kids would just resist the idea. I would personally switch schools.

message 11: by Emily (new)

Emily G | 14 comments I am currently reading "Blue is for Nightmares." The main characters in the book are Stacy, Drea, and Amber. Stacy is the most down to earth. Drea is a girl that tries to get everything she wants, she is a little stuck up. Amber is the annoying one.
_________________

I chose Crush at Thomas Hall.

_________________

I think uniforms are a bad idea for public schools. Students have enough dress codes we should be able to choose our own clothes. People wouldn't listen anyway and they would wear whatever they wanted. People would probably move. I believe we are old enough pick out our own outfits.

message 12: by Greg (new)

Greg Ripka (GregRipka) | 8 comments I am currently reading Sasquatch, and the dad of dylan believes in sasquatch from meeting it in a past adventure. So now since the mom went on a trip dylan and his dad go on search for this creature.

I chose Why We Believe In Gods.

I feel school uniforms are no way to go. Its all about self esteem and concious. If the girl/guy dosent like what hes wearing and thinks he looks dumb or weird. His self esteems gonna go down. In SRRHS its no way to go because where not that kind of school were known for being able to wear hats. Lets not take aways our cloths for uniforms.

message 13: by Duncan (new)

Duncan | 12 comments I am reading The TommyKnockers by stephen King. Right now the town is 'Becoming' i dont know what that means yet. The main charector is Bobbi Andersen and Gard. Bobbi is a book writer. Gard is an alcoholic poet. I the book why we beleive in gods as my book to win. I think they would be bad because then people would have to buy clothes for out side of school and seperate clothes for inside school.

message 14: by Destiny (new)

Destiny | 12 comments Weekly Update. I am currently reading Don't Die, My Love by Lurlene McDaniel . What is going on in the book is that Luke is in remission from cancer and he is trying hard to get back into shape in time for football with his girlfriend Julie, the coaches daughter helping him along the way. The main characters are Julie and Luke. Luke is a junior starting quarterback and Julie is his girlfriend of 3 years.

Weekly Activity: I chose Becoming sage

Weekly Discussion: I feel that school uniforms is so not needed. They are ugly and a waste of money. People do not want them so why make us wear them. We are a public school meaning we can wear whatever we want. They would be a bad idea. People would not want to go to a school with uniforms meaning Sauk rapids will lose students.

message 15: by Kelly (new)

Kelly | 11 comments I'm currently reading "Beautiful Creatures" by Kami Garcia. It's about a small town boy named Ethan Wate and this girl named Lena Duchaness that he meets. She completely turns his world upside down, and causes a slight uproar in the town of Gatlin.

I chose Graveminder by Melissa Marr

I do not like school uniforms. It would be unfair to bring them to our school since it is indeed a public one. I also feel SRRHS would lose many students because of it. People should be free to dress according to how they want to as long as it's appropriate.

message 16: by Dayna (new)

Dayna M | 14 comments I am reading "Burned" by Ellen Hopkins. Right now the main character Pattyn has been sent to go live with her aunt in a small town in Nevada. She has been sent there so she can learn to behave. Pattyn is a mormon that does not live by the mormon rules. She parties, sneaks out, and has relationships with non-mormon guys. She has a sweet personality and is charmed easily by guys. After being sent to live with her aunt she has become more mature and has thought a lot about not being mormon anymore.
-------------------------
The book I entered to win is "Not My Daughter" by Barbara Delinsky.
______________________________
I think school uniforms are a good idea if you have had them for a school since the start. I think that how people dress is a reason for someone to judge them and taking them away would help with judging. I do not think they would be good for our school though. We have never had them and I believe it would just cause people to act up. I feel like it would make SRRHS worse because students would violate the dress codes and would not follow the rules.

message 17: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (TrevorV) | 7 comments The Book I have been reading for the last few weeks was Deltora Quest: City Of The Rats. The main character I would think is Lief a 16 year old boy traveling to the most dangerous of places to restore the sacred gems into the magical belt of Deltora. He already has 2 gems but he was on his way to the city of the rats to find the third and the horrific monsters that lay within the city. I think this was a great book and has a cliffhanger ending. anyone who likes adventure books should read this book it is awesome.
_______________________________________________________

Reaper's Return by Ren Cummins
_______________________________________________________

I would not like uniforms because it is how people express how they are feeling and help describe what type of person you are. If it happened in SRRHS I believe that a lot of people would rebel in school and wear whatever they want because we had this discussion in another class and yeah...

message 18: by Levi (new)

Levi Riese | 3 comments I am currently reading "Level 26" by Anthony Zuiker. It is about a killer who has never left a trace of DNA or any evidence of himself at one of his murders, but has left little bits and pieces of the story of why and how he did it. Some how he manages to get away every time after about 30 years. He has not been caught yet, but i feel he will pretty soon!

___________________

I chose "Lukes Legacy"
_________

The shool uniform thing seems a little far, especially for a public school. I would think that it would be alright for a super rich private school, with little amounts of people. If SRRHS ever adopted this rule, I think that I would just not wear it. Or make sure i got it super dirty somehow everyday.

message 19: by Lauren (new)

Lauren L | 14 comments I am currently reading Firefly Lane. This book is really good so far, but my mom told me I'm not even to the really good part yet. The main characters are Kate and Tully. They are best friends, and they have totally different lives. Kate is a stay at home mom with three children while Tully is living her dream life. She has her own tv show which Kate's husband, Johnny, produces. Kate and Tully have been friends ever since they were young.
-------------------------------

I choose "Between Here and Forever"
-------------------------------

I think that having uniforms for our school is a bad idea. The way we dress allows us the express ourselves. If we would have uniform; we should started from the beginning. It would just give a reason to act up and violate it. Uniforms would change SRRHS for the worse. The students wouldn't follow the rules because we haven't grown up with them.

message 20: by Markel (new)

Markel C | 9 comments The book i am reading is "slam" by Walter Dean Myers, i'm on page 245 almost done. It is a good book for anyone who likes basketball. The main character is "Slam" and he lives in NYC and he just transferred to a new school and its about how hes doing with school and the basketball season, and just his life pretty much.

The book I entered to win is "hitman" because it looked really interesting.

I wouldnt agree with school uniforms at SRRHS because its a public school, and i think if some people want uniforms they should just go to a private school with them. I think if we approved of uniforms people would break the rules alot and it would be a mess.

message 21: by Tyler (new)

Tyler | 9 comments I am reading storm breaker the main character he is currently in a different country being a Spy he took over his uncles job who was just murdered and he is going after the guy that killed him

I think school uniforms would not be a good idea cause most people wouldnt wear them anyway and then just more people would get in trouble and it wouldnt give people the chance to wear and show off the type of things or clothing they like

message 22: by Casey (new)

Casey K | 14 comments I am currently reading Stealing Heaven. The main character is Dani. She has been moving around her whole life with her mom. They are criminals together. They stay in a city and find information out about good houses to rob of silver, jewelry and other things. Once they rob the houses, they pick up and move. The part I am at in the book is Dani is falling for a cop named Greg. She has become very good friends with his sister Allison. She is scared to tell her mom about anything thats going because she feels she will let her mom down. She wants to settle down and live a normal life, have a house and things of her own, and friends.

I chose "Babe in Boyland".

I think that school uniforms would be a bad idea. It wouldn't end well. I feel that we are old enough to pick out our own clothes. I would probably switch schools I wouldn't be comfortable in a skirt all day. I hate skirts!

message 23: by Zack (new)

Zack Haffner | 13 comments I am currently reading Brian's Hunt by Gary Paulsen. The main character is Brian. He just got done with being in the winter alone and now he is going on lakes and ponds in spring. its nice weather and everything seems to be fine until he sees a dog. The dog leads him to something tramatic and sick that not even brian can stand. He basically makes it his mission to kill the bear.

message 24: by Zack (new)

Zack Haffner | 13 comments I think that school uniforms would be a bad idea. They would be really uncomfortable and would only annoy people. There's really no point in having them. They would just annoy everyone and would be a hassle. Nobody would wear them.

message 25: by Brandy (new)

Brandy | 13 comments I am currently reading "The Advetures of Flash Jackson". Not much has happend in the book so far she is still at home with a broken leg- stuck in the house and she discovers that her best friend (that ran away a little while back in the book) was staying at her naughbors house. The main character is Flash, she's a 15 year old girl who doesnt take crap from anyone, she's very tough for a girl.
-------------------------------------

I chose "Bright Light" by Dee Wallace
-------------------------------------

Personaly i dislike them, but they would be good because people wouldn't get picked on for what they wear becuase we're all wearing the same thing. I think it would change our school by decreasing the bullying problem that we have by a lot but we are a public school and not a private school so I think there would be a lot of issues and rebelian against it.

message 26: by Kaleb (new)

Kaleb Kent | 4 comments I am reading the Tear Catcher by Lynn Mackenzie, and so far it is a very good book! The book is about A man named Bruce that is diagnosed with cancer. Bruce is actually the authors husband, and they have a 2 children named, Blake and Nicole. Bruce is a very strong and motivated man. He just found out from the doctor that the cancer has been spread to his lungs. I think it is a bad idea to get uniforms mostly because it makes us all look the same. If we had uniforms more and more people would get in trouble because they either wouldn't wear the uniform or they would out their own twist on it. I think uniforms wouldn't change SRRHS mostly because i don't think most of the kids would wear them!
