message 1: by Robert (new)

Robert (riakin) I just finished
My Dead Body (Joe Pitt, #5) by Charlie Huston .

I liked Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher .

So, armed with that knowledge, suggest to me a book.

message 3: by TheThirdLie (new)

TheThirdLie Sandman Slim by Richard Kadrey and Child of Fire by Harry Connolly are both pretty good. Also, Hard Day's Knight by John Hartness.

All three are pretty strong series so far [though each only has two books out]. I rate them pretty close to the Dresden Files.

Tasula | 150 comments I love Huston's vamp series, and I also love Jim Butcher's Dresden series, so maybe you would also like the following authors/books I have loved- gritty, lots of action and supernatural characters:

Carey, Mike The Devil You Know
Clay&Susan Mitchell- The Greyfriar

Betelgeuze | 114 comments I second Mike Carey & Mark Del Franco.

Other good series:

The Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman

Simon R. Green's Nightside series

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 45 comments I was coming on to say Mike Carey. I'm reading Vicious Circle (Felix Castor, #2) by Mike Carey now.

I have Mark Del Franco in my TBR but I haven't read him yet.

I read Ill Wind (Weather Warden, #1) by Rachel Caine this week and really liked it.

Julia | 615 comments I second (fourth?) Mark del Franco, this is the first bookUnshapely Things.

The Cal Leandros series by Rob Thurman is also good Nightlife.

So is Dog Days by John Levitt and A Kiss Before the Apocalypse by Thomas E. Sniegoski.

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments I'm getting on the Mike Carey/Simon R. Green/Richard Kadrey band wagon. Love all of them, their stories, their writing styles. I've read several of Green's books, not just the Nightside series, and he is a master story teller.(IMO) I've only read Carey's Felix Castor series with the exception of the most recent one. I read the first Sandman Slim book a few weeks ago, and it was a total blast! I am eagerly awaiting a cheaper form of the second book.

message 9: by Yadira (new)

Yadira | 16 comments I really recommend Sandman Slim, it was one of the best books I've read this year. I can't wait for the third book to be released.
I also enjoyed Child of Fire. It has a Jim Butcher feel, although it has less humour than Sandman Slim or Dresden Files

Becca (goblinfan) | 215 comments Yadira, I'm assuming you've read the second Sandman Slim, how was it?

message 11: by Yaz (new)

Yaz | 13 comments The Matthew Swift series by Kate Griffin sounds good, I haven't read it yet, but was intrigued enough to add it to my tbr list.
According to the reviews it's not not fluffy but a complex read. The first book is A Madness of Angels.
Dresden Files is one of my favourites and Mike Carey's Felix Castor series is good too.

Excellent, it was a pretty fun read. It's pretty fast paced, dark sometimes, lots of banter and action, and Stark is the same badass as in Sandman Slim, but somehow more melancolic, and still thinking of Alice. Beware that a lot of the plot is a set up for the next book, although there's no cliffhanger at the end.
Ah, and there are lots of zombies :D

message 13: by Enjee (new)

Enjee This book, Hounded (Iron Druid Chronicles, #1) by Kevin Hearne , is the first in a new series by Kevin Hearne that was just released April 26. I was fortunate enough to read an ARC courtesy of Goodreads First Reads.
I loved this book, and I look forward to two more books scheduled for release this summer:
Hexed by Kevin Hearn Hammered (Iron Druid Chronicles, #3) by Kevin Hearne

Atticus is a 1200 year old Druid who looks like a college student. He has a vampire and a werewolf for lawyers. His life has been full of characters from myth and legend, as well as just plain normal humans like his neighbors.

Thanks. Now I really can't wait to read the second book, I've had that itch bad since I finished the first one. The thought of zombies slows me down some though, which is kinda good. I really don't like zombies...

Schnaucl | 30 comments I'll add another vote for Del Franko Mark.

I'd also suggest Justin Gustainis. I think he and Jim Butcher are either friends or there's some kind of mentor relationship going on. Dresden's pub makes an appearance in the second book in Gustainis' series.

message 16: by Heather (new)

Heather | 2 comments I adore the Dresden Files.

I will give a vote to the Mike Carey "Felix Castor" series.

I will be watching this thread for other authors to try between Dresden

books.

message 17: by Enjee (new)

Enjee I'll add another vote for Mark Del Franco.
I have read all his books, except the last one which came out April 26 and is still on my TBR pile.
The Conner Grey series: Unshapely Things (Connor Grey, #1) by Mark Del Franco Unquiet Dreams (Connor Grey, #2) by Mark Del Franco Unfallen Dead (Connor Grey, #3) by Mark Del Franco Unperfect Souls (Connor Grey, #4) by Mark Del Franco Uncertain Allies (Connor Grey, #5) by Mark Del Franco
and the Laura Blackstone series: Skin Deep (Laura Blackstone, #1) by Mark Del Franco Face Off (Laura Blackstone, #2) by Mark Del Franco

I also really enjoyed Ill Wind, and have already purchased the second.

I read the beginning of Laura Anne Gilman's Hard Magic, the first book in the Paranormal Scene Investigations. It sounds like a really cool series; I think I may be reading it (eventually). It sounds like something that you would be interested in, Robert.

message 19: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (eternity21) I love the Simon Green books. I was recommended the
Sweet Silver Blues the beginning of the Garrett P.I. series but haven't started it yet

message 20: by TheThirdLie (new)

TheThirdLie Imperium by Nicholas Olivo would be another good book to read.

message 21: by Ed (last edited Aug 16, 2011 10:57PM) (new)

Ed Nemo (ed_nemo) | 112 comments My recommendations:

Action with a little humor
Simon R Green - Nightside and Secret Histories series.
Nick Pollotta - Bureau 13 Series
Charles Stross - Laundry Files Series
Anton Strout - Simon Canderous Series
Rob Thurman - Cal Leandros series (the books steadily improve)
Robert Asprin - Griffin McCandles series

I really wanted to like the Charlie Huston Joe Pitt series but it was a bit too depressing for me. (Though I did read all of the books)
Mike Carey - Felix Castor series (first two books were outstanding)
Cherie Priest - Cheshire Red (Vampire) and Clockwork Century Series (Steampunk)
F Paul wilson - Repairman Jack Series
Mark Del Franko - Connor Grey Series
Lincoln Child - Pendergast series
Richard Kadrey - Sandman Slim Series
Harry Connelly - Twenty Palaces series
Thomas E Sniegoski - Remy Chandler series
