Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Has anyone read The Radleys. I found it unexpectedly good. A very different take on a vampire story

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Looks good, ive added to my list, but I neet to cut back on the crime fiction for a bit, I'll be getting nightmares!

Yes, I read it and was extremely impressed. I actually re-read a paragraph about three times because it was so evocative. I've never done that with a book before or since. I was so impressed I went out and bought The Dead Fathers Club. Needless to say, with the size of my TBR, I haven't got around to it yet.

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Oh Jackie, now I've added it too! I'm going to need to give up sleeping entirely to get some of these books read! As for Winter in Madrid, it's been next to my bed for over a year!

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Just finished Brodmaw Bay and it's my first five star read of the year. If you liked the Waiting room, it's likely you'll like this too. Creepy stuff.

Jackie, I think it's right up you street!

message 57: by JackieB (new)

JackieB | 251 comments That's good to hear. I have a copy in my TBR mountain. I'll have to dig it out.

Angela (bookangel2) | 1454 comments I am absolutely loving The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern . Magical!

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments We seem to have quite a few new members who are quite young and I would like to recommend the YA series called the Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn. My own daughter is 18 and really enjoyed them, and I can't tell you how many times she has lent out her set to friends, or we have bought full sets as presents. They are beautifully written and completely engaging. It's odd to start with the prequel Heaven's Net Is Wide, but I did and I definitely think I enjoyed the following books more because of it.

Brad Sheridan | 1 comments Graphic novel: Stitches by David Small. Intense & dark.

Fantasy ebook: The Gamble of the Godless by Dave Maine. Offbeat and fun.

Nonfiction book: Packing for Mars: The Curious Science of Life in the Void by Mary Roach. Hilarious and educational.

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments Mona wrote: "Just finished Gone Girl. I loved it except for the ending."

That seems to be quite a common reaction. I didn't like it either, but there were other components of the book I disliked too. I find it really difficult to enjoy a book where the characters are all so unpleasant!

Lorrie (lorrier) Just finished "Someone Knows My Name" by Lawrence Hill. It was extraordinary.

It was really pretty awesome, wasn't it, Angela? I really for a while there believed I was Aminata walking through the jungle. Hill just explained his character and the setting so well.

In fact, I don't think I've read anything quite like it - Lawrence Hill certainly did a wonderful job in bringing this story to life. Over here in England it's called The Book of Negroes - different title, but the same great book!

Jacqui McQuarrie | 9 comments Winter of the World. 800+ pages, but well worth the time invested.

Chris Stanley (christinelstanley) | 922 comments I can't recall whether I've posted my recent great read The Rosie Project, The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion . Apologies if I have, BUT it's fabulous. A real find from a new author Graeme Simsion. Easy to read, funny, clever, romantic and refreshing. Some terrific dialogue too and characters that will stay with you

The Good Good Pig: The Extraordinary Life of Christopher Hogwood

I was very surprised how much I enjoyed the Good Good Pig. I also got some great laughs from The Ex-Boyfriends Handbook.

The Ex-Boyfriend's Handbook

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) Hmmm....last book I read that I really enjoyed was "Inferno" by Dan Brown.

message 92: by Les (new)

Les | 974 comments "The Last Leaves Falling" by Sarah Benwell. Really tough read but well written about a Japanese teenage boy facing the end of his life due to ALS (normally it doesn't strike until your 40s-50s so he was horribly unlucky). Definitely not a cheery fluff read for the beach...

The Adversary By Emmanuel Carrère. Based on on a true story. A psychological thriller based on a horrific crime in 1993, you literally cannot put this book down. I totally recommend this book. It's not very often I say this about a book!!

message 95: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Recently finished We Have Always Lived in the Castle We Have Always Lived in the Castle by Shirley Jackson .

I had not heard of this author previously and is not my usual read but I really enjoyed it. American gothic.
