Fascinating Read

I found this book immediately engaging. In some ways, it reminded me of a book I read back in high school which I think was titled Giants of the Earth; anyway, it's a fascinating story about Fidelis, a young man who sets out from Germany after returning from World War I. He visits his army friend's wife to tell her that her husband was killed; he ends up marrying her. While she stays behind, he travels to America with nothing but a suitcase full of sausages. The story follows their lives and the lives of their children and neighbors. Absolutely fascinating and one of those books I hated to see end, but it was a great ending as well!
