JPerceval | 154 comments On this last day in April, I placed an order via the Borders website. OMG, what a PAINFUL experience! Three tries and the stupid order wouldn't go through. So I called customer service (if I didn't have $5 in Borders bucks that I wanted to apply to Three Wrong Turns to bring it down to a reasonable price, I would have given up and gone to Amazon or B&N, seriously!).

Got a lady there who, though very nice, could barely read. While we were talking, an email popped up in my own system, telling me the order went through. BUT IT DIDN'T TAKE MY BORDERS BUCKS, WHICH WAS THE WHOLE FREAKIN' POINT! GAH!

So after the 5th time I explained this to the woman, she finally seemed to get it, and she put something in her system to give me $5 more Borders bucks to use next month, since she couldn't take it off my current order. After all that effort, hopefully a happy ending. I'll breathe a sigh of relief when I get my books and see my Borders bucks balance.

You know, you might want to see if B&N will accept your Borders bucks. I was skeptical but my mom swears she's used a Borders gift card at B&N. It wouldn't hurt to try or ask.

Yeah, they always get me with those stupid Borders Bucks, too. I stopped buying from them, so I don't get them anymore and I'm feeling relieved about it.

I would try Merith's suggestion -- B&N owns Borders, now, anyway, right?

message 54: by JPerceval (new)

JPerceval | 154 comments Does B&N own Borders? I dropped my B&N membership about a year ago b/c Borders was closer and they sent better coupons (heck B&N stopped sending coupons completely!). Yes, I'm cheap, but books are expensive, dammit. *g*

Not to mention B&N memberships cost $, and Borders didn't (I think that's changing).

B&N bought Borders just after Christmas, I think. Or maybe before....

At any rate, I think I'll go buy my Plakcy from ARe or Amazon or something.

Does anyone know for sure how to pronounce 'Plakcy'?

Do you group your orders to save on shipping? If so, you might want to consider an Amazon Prime membership. At $79 it's pricey, but you also get streaming movies with the membership, so it's like getting Netflix thrown in for free. I don't know how deep the catalog is, but if I still read paper, I'd definitely consider springing for the membership.

message 57: by JPerceval (new)

JPerceval | 154 comments Borders membership is now $25, but you get a lot more for your money. Their free membership was crap. In my local area, B&N has gone to hell, and I love my local Borders, so I dropped my B&N membership and picked up the Borders one.

This is the first time I've tried to order online from them though, and I wasn't impressed. Granted, B&N once screwed up an online order of mine in a legen...wait-for-it...dary (!!!) fashion, and their customer service people were worse.

This is why I like to physically go to a store, see and touch the book I want, and buy it right then and there. But none of the big box stores carry small press books in store. Grrr.

This is how I switched to electronic, originally. So the paid membership is worth it? Their e-book section is crap, so I hardly deal with them anymore.

message 59: by JPerceval (new)

JPerceval | 154 comments For me, it's worth it, b/c I don't do e-books. You get 10% every purchase, still build up Borders bucks, every now and then they throw you a "personal shopping day" where you get an additional 10% off, and, of course, twice a week you get those coupons, so when you get a 33% off coupon, with your membership, it's 43% off. And members get free shipping online.

My membership pretty much paid for itself after about the 4th visit (I go to my local at least twice a month, lured by good coupons).

message 60: by Anne (new)

Anne Tenino (annetenino) | 3156 comments JPerceval wrote: "And members get free shipping online."

Wow, that would make it worth it, if I still bought bound books with any frequency. For me, it's the fact that the 33% coupons are often good for e-books that keeps me in the program. B&N has never done that - their coupons aren't good on any electronic media.

message 61: by JPerceval (new)

JPerceval | 154 comments I was surprised the 10% was good online too. According to the membership specs, it's not, but when I checked out, it took the 10% off all the same. So I'll take that as compensation for the fact that the system lost my damn Borders bucks!

JPerceval | 154 comments I got my shipping notice from Borders.com today. All my books were in it...except Three Wrong Turns.

*headdesk*

I'm hoping another email turns up with a separate shipment, otherwise, I may need a padded cell!

sorry, but you describe your "Big Adventure of Ordering 'Three Wrong Turns'" so funny, that I have to laugh... It feels like some slapstick comedy.

My best wishes are with you on your quest. ;-))

Oh J! That's terrible! Hopefully you'll get your order soon! And hopefully the book will be there or coming shortly!

Becky, yup, I get free shipping with Amazon, if I buy more than $25 I think. And that usually works for me. Besides, there are sooo many books on my wish list at the moment, it seems as if I'll never run out!

I've never considered the Prime thing. I don't have a need for movies, since I'm trying to give myself more writing time and not take it away with the TV, but I'll look into it and see overall if it would help. Thanks for letting me know about it!

Oh yeah, and the library has enough DVDs to keep me occupied for free already. hehehe. Working in a place like that is dangerous for a place like me. It's just too bad we don't have enough or any M/M romance novels, and I have no control over the adult book ordering. ... *sigh* then I'd be in REAL trouble. hehehehe.

So, I have yet to order this book, but I think I'll get to it maybe later today? Since my much anticipated book hasn't made a paperback appearance yet, I'd redebating what to order with Three Wrong Turns... there's just too many choices! (Not that I'm complaining...)

It sounds like three wrong turns at Borders.... They didn't even give you a backorder notice?

message 67: by ~~~Heather S.~~~ (new)

~~~Heather S.~~~ (heather796) Well, I finished the book and really enjoyed it!! I had a 12 hour road trip today to visit a job site and listened to TTS (text to speech) on my kindle all day. All the action and adventure with hot and sexy scenes made for a good day! I look forward to chatting with u guys!
message 68: by JPerceval (new)
JPerceval | 154 comments Fortunately, a separate shipping notice showed up overnight. My other books will arrive from FedEx on the 5th. Three Wrong Turns will hopefully not make any wrong turns and be here by the 7th.
*fingers crossed*
Neil Plakcy (neilplakcy) For Anne-- Plakcy rhymes with taxi. (That's what I write on the board at the beginning of every semester.) There's no letter X in the Russian alphabet (that's why you see names like Aleksander), but there is an S and a C. When my grandfather came to the US he converted each of the Russian letters to English, hence the funky spelling.
I'm looking forward to hearing what you guys think of Three Wrong Turns & happy to answer any questions. I'm just doing line edits for the third book in the series and all the comma stuff is making me crazy.
unless Josh changes it. That's the weekend before the end week in the month.
I should be getting my copy on Monday! YAY!!! Only three more days to wait. I think I can wait that long... I think I can... I think I can... I think I can...
But what should I read in the meantime? I've got 8 pages left of the YA novel I'm currently reading. If I'm lucky, I'll finish it before I leave work. Hmmm...
That's why I love ebooks. Instant gratification. If I order paperbacks from Amazon it'll take 3 weeks before I get them. lol
Emanuela ~plastic duck~ (manutwo) | 1768 comments It's already in my e-reader :-) I am in so many challenges I have to keep a schedule, lol. This is due on Sunday.
message 86: by Anne (new)
Anne Tenino (annetenino) | 3156 comments LIam is completely swoon-worthy.
I realized at quarter til midnight last night that I had bread rising that I had to bake (no room to put it in the fridge) so I got up and spent an hour reading Three Turns while I waited for it to rise again and then baked it.
The bread didn't turn out that well, but the books was totally worth it. I love Plakcy's writing style, although it took me a chapter or two to get into it. I'm slow, I guess.
