They are also low in calories and fat free.

I agree! Better than food because it lasts, and you can always swap one for another.

I spent $20 at the used bookstore today on Doctor Faustus and Alfred Brendel on Music: Collected Essays. Not a bad deal as they're both in excellent condition, I had been meaning to buy Dr. Faustus, and the Brendel book is two books in one.

The Leopard
The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty"

The Leopard is a gorgeous book. It was published after his death and the only thing he wrote. There was a movie done with Bert Lancaster, I think. I've only ever met one person that has read it. Let me know what you think.

I loved both Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and How to Live Safely in a Science Fictional Universe. Enjoy!

It's been ages since I've been to the book store. When Borders closed that made the nearest bookstore about 20 miles away. The last time I went was when Deborah Harkness' book just came out, the second one in the Discovery of Witches series, I bought that and Larry bought a big copy of Dante's Divine Comedy with these great etchings. That was ages ago though.

Does Amazon count, if you bought several things? If so:
Dear Fatty by Dawn French
A Tiny Bit Marvellous by Dawn French
The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham
Papa Panov's Special Christmas by Leo Tolstoy

message 208: by [deleted user] (new)

Yep.

message 209: by [deleted user] (new)

Jim...you're really busting my chops today.

It's a tough job, but somebody has to do it :-)

message 211: by [deleted user] (new)

And, you're so good at it!

message 212: by Jim (new)

Jim | 6484 comments There is no sense in doing something unless you are going to do it well.

message 213: by [deleted user] (new)

It's admirable to set goals and achieve them.

message 214: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments At the Baltimore Book Festival this weekend I got:
a Tiptree collection I already had, as a loaner
an early Kate Wilhelm book ($2) that turns out to be going for $100 online
some Kate Bornstein
and Cat Rambo's Near + Far collection
That is a remarkably small haul, which is good.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Just got a copy of JD Salinger's Nine Stories (which I've been looking for ever since I read Franny & Zooey) and The Portrait of a Lady. I'm hoping to make a trip to the used bookstore today to stock up on cheap Stephen King paperbacks.

message 216: by [deleted user] (new)

Hmmm, ours starts next week, SP, who knew? Apparently I liked it on FB & everything...sometime in the past...which I totally don't remember. Thanks for reminding me!

Bought 18 books for $27 today. Where am I going to put them? No idea.

message 218: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Store them over here at my place. I've purged a lot of clutter so there's room.

message 219: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24786 comments Mod
Okay, and then you can just Fedex me a book when I'm ready to read it.

message 220: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments You betcha. We get a good discount at FedEx.

message 221: by Jammies (new)

Jammies It's sad, but my most recent "splurge" was a $2 book at Big Lots. *sigh*

message 222: by [deleted user] (new)

They have books at Big Lots?

message 223: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24786 comments Mod
Big lots of them, I'm going to guess.

message 224: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Just a table or shelf, Amelia.

message 225: by [deleted user] (new)

I've only been there a couple of times, but it reminded me a bit of a jumble sale with new junk, but odds and ends that fell off a truck.

Just bought three books on B&N.com. The Last Dragonlord (Dragonlord, #1) by Joanne Bertin Dragon and Phoenix (Dragonlord, #2) by Joanne Bertin Bard's Oath (Dragonlord, #3) by Joanne Bertin

Thanks again, Jammies!

message 229: by [deleted user] (new)

I feel one coming on...

message 230: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments My cousin just shared with me a folder of over 1000 epub format e-books. I haven't read through the entire list of titles (about 1/3 so far), but those I have seen appear to be mostly SciFi, some young adult, and a few things for kids my son's age. There's also a fair amount of Erle Stanley Gardner.

message 231: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments ::thinks Barb is pretty damn sweet to share her gift cards::

I received some Amazon gift cards of which I will be buying solely for me. Well, maybe little will get a book or two.

message 232: by Laurin (new)

Laurin (llooloo) | 1867 comments 4 Cleo Coyle books, the Great Gatsby, some ebooks.

message 233: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments I've purchased 14 books by Jim Butcher and one froggy bookmark at Barnes and Noble this year. I just don't search out this thread. Lazy boy.

message 234: by Phil (new)

I just bought six books at my book swap store (one J. Butcher and four Maguire included) and totally did not list them here, either.

TWINNIE POWER!

Barb wrote: "Does nobody else buy books around here?"

No. I have to read the hundreds of books I own before I can buy anything new.

message 237: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 488 comments I'm not a book buyer. Except for reference books I want to have on my studio shelves (and then they have to be really good ones, since they're expensive.)

I'm broke, I rarely re-read, and I live 3 blocks from the library.

message 238: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 488 comments I love reading about what other people are buying, though!

I put myself of that restriction as well.

message 240: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Totally pissed at B&N right now.

I started reading an Elizabeth George novel I purchased as an e-book in 2011. Now, 60 pages in, it's asking me to unlock it. It wants the name and credit card number used for the purchase.

I NO LONGER HAVE THAT FUCKING CREDIT CARD!

These fuckers are going to tell me how to unlock ALL of the e-books they've sold me, or they're giving me a fucking refund. If the online fuckers won't do it, I'll have the manager of the local B&N do a refund. Luckily he is a friend.

message 241: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24786 comments Mod
See, that's why I hate ebooks. No, you're not going to control what I read and how through a device. Not gonna happen.

message 242: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments That is total bullshit! Why would they ever need to be able to lock a purchased book? That should not happen and should never have existed in the first place. Write those B&N assholes an email, too. The idea of ebooks revolve around conveniency and that is absofuckinglutely NOT convenient.

message 243: by Riona (new)

Riona (rionafaith) | 488 comments Yeah, that's ridiculous! I've never heard of that happening. Why???

I would write a scathing email too. Maybe they will even compensate you with vouchers for a few free ebooks or something!

message 244: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments Write something on their Facebook wall, too, if you are a Facebooker. I've actually seen a lot of positive results come from negative social network comments. Of course, I've also seen the comments "disappear" but it's worth a shot.

message 245: by Charlotte (new)

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments I also just went on a splurge...
1Q84
The Book Thief
Night Circus
The Corrections
Canada
The Sense of an Ending

Charlotte Creech | 100 comments Oh, and 1984 for my niece.

Phil | 11837 comments Got my problem fixed. I had an unlocked copy on my old reader, so I copied that one to the pc, then to the nook.

message 248: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments Yay!

Fuckers should still get an email.

message 249: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11837 comments Oh, they did. And when I bring it up with my friend there might be a discount or some such made available to me.

message 250: by Susan (new)

Susan | 6406 comments As there should be.
