I like the changes they made to the ending. The way the book ended left a really bad taste in my mouth."

Maybe it was an off brand of paper or ink.

I've tried to read Blindness, and I just can't seem to do it. Not that it's bad, far from it, but it makes me too sad and frustrated with humanity. I hope you have better luck.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments My thrift shop splurge at the nursing home I visited yesterday for Hospice:

"Betty Crocker's Picture Cookbook," 1st Edition (3rd printing) 1950
"A Taste of Terrace Hill," 2nd Edition, 1979 (Terrace Hill is the Iowa Governor's mansion)
"San Francisco a la Carte," by the Junior League of San Francisco, 1979

The first one is a real treasure--lots of great photos and tips. I bought it for the inscription:

"To: The Wilch--not that I think you need this, but you might poison yourself, and cookbooks are cheaper than flowers, Johnny"

That is a fabulous inscription. I love when an old book makes you think about the people that had it before you, and make up stories about their lives.

janine | 7709 comments That is a great inscription!

I also shopped some thrift store books:

James Herriot - Favorite dog stories
This one I bought for my father's birthday. He likes James Herriot and he doesn't like dogs. I think it's time to change that, because dogs are awesome.

A Dutch translation of Tom Stoppard - The real thing

Joost van Vondel - Gijsbrecht van Aemstel
I wasn't sure if I already had a copy of this.

And a sort of catalog (the size of a thin paperback) that was published in 1948. It has short stories and poetry by various authors the publisher has to offer and a list of books the publisher has published since 1945. It still has the original card to order the books with. If only I had a 2ct. stamp.

I also almost bought a Van Gogh biography. It's been sitting on the thrift store shelves for at least a month and I kind of feel sorry for it. The title is: A Portrait Of Vincent, it was written by two authors with the same last name starting with an H, and was first published in 1955. Problem is, I can't find it online. I might buy it anyway.

janine | 7709 comments I bought the Van Gogh biography as a thrift store rescue, I'm not sure yet if I'm going to read it. I also bought an old little book (published in 1863) with three short stories by Ottilie Wildermuth that was gifted to a young girl from her school in July 1865 for her 'vlijt en goed gedrag' (diligence and good behaviour). It contains three etchings.
