SOLVED Epic fantasy about a nameless main character [s]

I read this book sometime in the late 90s and it would guess it was written late 80s early 90s but it could be older. The cover had mountains on it and I want to say the title was something like 'Falcons Claw' or 'Eagle Claw'. I could be wrong about that but everything I search brings up nothing. I'm pretty sure its part of a series too and it could be YA but I don't think it was.

PLOT
The main character lives in an orphanage kind of place of all boys but they are being raised to become servants/slaves for noble families. The leader of this place is called Damal/Dumar (something like that) and he chooses the MC to be his successor when he dies and the MC becomes the Dumal. He decides to run away with his friend instead and appoints another boy to be Dumal and escapes. The two meet up eventually with a girl who has curly red hair and runs a traveling puppet show. I don't really remember why they were running away I think someone was chasing them or something like that.

SPOILERS
The MC and the girl fall for each other and she becomes pregnant and has the child a son I think. The MC somehow becomes king but is stabbed and killed at the end. His friend takes over as regent till the son is old enough to become king.

Any help would be greatly appreciated I've been trying to find this book for awhile.
